I might get this at dinner. I have absolutely hammered Far Cry 2 (about 40 hours in little over a week) so I'll probably trade it in and leave it leaving me wanting more.

Penny Arcade linked to some guy's short piece on beginning Fallout 3. He reminded me of something that I found very poignant; the beat up announcement sign outside the school in Springvale, with some words still legible from before the war; there was to be a day off school on that coming Friday.

Also, the town of Minefield, where the broken down houses contain skeletal remains, including one couple clutching each other in bed as they died.

Anyone not loving this must be broken. There, I said it.

...to detonate the atom bomb in Megaton - did you try going back to Megaton to survey the damage? If you do, the entire place is englufled in a cloud of dust and if you look around you can find not only the scattered remains of the robot sentry that normally stands outside the gate to Megaton, but also Moira from Craterside Supply, who's now become a ghoul. I may just be a big girl's blouse, but I couldn't help but feel a little bit upset over that.

It's a strange beast this game, as on the one hand it really is just a re-skin of Oblivion, it's very clearly the same engine running the game. But on the other hand, it's very different. The combat, for instance, is simply miles better than Oblivion's and I find the whole atmosphere far more compelling. You genuinely feel like there is something to be gained from exploration in this too.

Re zio: Indeed. I'm actually ducking and diving between rock outcroppings when out in The Wastes, scouting the environment for movement before dashing to another hidey place. Not that it makes much appreciable difference with a low sneak skill, but it keeps me amused.

It is annoying - there doesn't appear to be any definite effect to 'crippling' a body part at all. When I've crippled someone's head, I would expect them to have issues shooting me, to be honest - which doesn't seem to be the case.

In theory, it affects their stats that you can't see. Reduced accuracy/movement speed/etc. I suppose we should be glad that unconsciousness has been removed, as watching helplessly as you were knocked out and then ravaged by your foes wasn't nice.

But then, given Oblivion couldn't seem to properly treat having three arrows sticking out of your face, are we really surprised here?

If you cripple the legs, they do tend to limp a bit, but it doesn't make the sort of difference you'd expect.

That's a possibility, although I never got fed up of Pixie Quest I just got distracted. Anyway this has guns and no pixies and so is better.

Yeah, but I'm using Fallout 1+2 as the yardsticks, not Oblivion. I just fondly remember the really gruesome critical hit descriptions, which seem to have entirely been replaced by 'head falls off'.

I was, it is an excellent game. I put 40 hours into it last week which, by my standards, is a lot for any one game, I just thought I'd seen pretty much most of what it had to offer.

They definitely limp. They seem to get another weapon out if you shoot their normal one out of their hands, which is annoying.

I did get one raider with one sliver of health left cowering in a corner and snivelling "please let me live" though. The game needs an option to hold your pistol sideways for gangland executions when that happens. I am nearly level 7 now, how is everyone else doing? Has everyone figured out that sleeping in your own bed gets you +10% XP?

Only if they have one. I shot a missile laucher out of a Supermutant's hands, and he ran over to his dead mate, grabbed his hunting rifle off the ground, then started shooting at me. I nearly died I was so amazed.

Vance the head vampire dude has a key to a closet in his chambers with a unique sword, Vampire's Edge. It does base damage of 9 but I miss my Louisville Slugger. He also had a safe and computer I couldn't pick or hack.

Yes.
It also works for any bed you rent, e.g. the one in the bar in Megaton. I'm sure you can get other houses elsewhere too, as:

Exploding the Megaton bomb gets you an apartment in Tenpenny Tower. And a Very Evil alignment :D

You need Explosives 25 to interact with the bomb, mind. I think a dose of Mentats will help you out.

Is anyone else considering the level cap? I'm not going to be able to get even half the skills I would like to high levels. I could really see me replaying this as a talker character... and a dumb brawler... and an evil character... I'd love to see how some of the quests play out if the 10-25% speech chances that keep coming up actually succeed.

Also, has anyone tried a character with Int of 1? Didn't that make it impossible to talk in Fallout 2?
