10/10, yet the review makes me think the game is just shit. No dying, arrows guiding you, one-button fighting. I'll pass on this one

Exactly what made me look at the game again.
sound like progress to me (w.r.t RPGs of course)

What the fuck is that all about? It's a computer game review, not a university thesis. I barely understood a bloody word.

I think it might have been Brian Sewell going under the pseudonym of Christian Donlan.

I have it on pre-order after appreciating the foist one. I daren't click on that link due to hating reading things on the innerneh. I should only read about games while undergoing the anal pain of pushing excrement past my haemorrhoids.

Eurogamer's been going downhill recently but I liked that review.

Seems very much like an RPG sans grind.

Yeah, the EG review doesn't tell me anything apart from how it, like Braid, completely demolishes all my preconceptions and everything I've ever held dear.

Is it any good? No, but it's (gets thesaurus) this, and this, and this too!

Unfortunately, from what I can tell it sounds like a stylish but shallow experience, in which you coast through with little risk to yourself, enjoying the pretty sights but not actually struggling to do so.

Dammit, it's not much of an adventure if there's no danger, if when I foolishly (or accidentally) encounter a deathbear or a horde of bandits I can be sliced, diced and then JUST GET UP IMMEDIATELY AND CARRY ON. Doom with god mode was entertaining, yes, but you can only slaughter foes with impunity for so long until you get bored.

Unless I'm completely missing the point, of course, but I can't tell.

I'm not sure but I read it that instead of dying you had your experienced reduced, so you do get penalised, just not from the point of having to reload a level. A bit like Pokémon I guess. Suppose this sort of makes sense as you can just come back later and finish the fight after you've levelled up.

Losing a few experience points isn't much of a penalty, as you can just grind those back. I mean, fair enough, in most games you can quicksave your way through so death isn't too much of an inconvenience anyway, but this feels a step too far - rather like Bioshock, where you didn't really feel threatened (and thus the thrill is diminished) because you know there's no risk.

Yeah true! Although I think sometimes I'd rather die than have to kill another million rats or something to up my skillz for one bloody hard fight!

But I guess it come down to balance. If you can be rubbish and scrape through every flight it does seem rather pointless though… or indeed if you loss too many Skillz points and have to reload anyway.

I quite like this approach. Personally, I don't buy a game for the challenge, I buy it for the experience of playing it, because I'm a weedy casual gamer. That's not to say I like my games easy, but not having to go back to the last check point and trudge through the last 10 minutes of gameplay is a definite plus for me.

It depends on the game really. If I have to replay something because my tactics were poor then I don't mind. If I keep having to replay bits because I get killed by things I couldn't possibly have anticipated but will know about next time round then I usually get very quickly pissed off and never play the game again.

I've lost count of the amount of games I've given up on because I kept getting killed in the same place and then had to play through 20 minutes of shit just to get killed all over again. Most recently I can think of Quake on the Saturn, which I was really enjoying :(

A game forcing you to do that is a different issue to a game where you can't be killed.

An epic battle against a dangerous foe isn't nearly as exciting if you know that if you lose, you just dust yourself off and try again. I'm not saying you should have to fight through 20 minutes worth of minions after you die, however.

It's interesting that Fable II is a game that puts a lot of focus on every action having a consequence, but takes the ultimate consequence (death) and nerfs it.

Yeah it's a delicate balance. You could always lick a battery or squirt yourself with a water pistol whenever you snuff it.

See, the thing is, when you die, it is true that you leap straight back up again without a hitch (aside from a seemingly arbitrary loss in XP). But for every time you're knocked out, your character gains a scar. First few times you die, it's barely noticeable. But eventually they start to accrue and if you're careless, as I was first time round (as it took me a little while to clock what was going on), you'll just be this unlovable lump of scar tissue by the game's end. And everyone, positively everyone - from bandits to potential lovers - will comment on it. All those great things you did? No-one cares, freak, because you did it badly.

It's a weird system, but I love Fable II for it. Every time I look at my heroine's face, I'm reminded of the time I was fucked in the eye by a pack of Wolves in the Howling Halls, or whatever the fucking wretched place was called.

I bought Fable II today, and quite like it, since I'm rather attracted to Zoe Wanamaker. If anyone would like to join me in co-op thingy mode, I would welcome it. The North is a lonely, lonely place to be-ee-ee, trapped in.

That is superb.

Longer lasting, more punishing and more regretable than just having to redo a check point.

Wonderful.

Sorry Metal Angel but I'ld take that over checkpoints any day.

As I;m a cheapskate I pulled out hte first game (Lost Chapters Xbox) and it's decent but quite 'corridory' and rickty. Doesn't quite convince you that the place has a 'reality' to it, if you get me. No sense ofplace like you get with Zelda.

So peeps who have played it, does this fix it?

Me and the O'Doom just snuggled up in multiplayer, and I must say that the effect on the camera was not wholly fantastic :S Think Viva Pinata: TIP's yoyoing on the angle.

I don't have any quests left now for my co-op snugglebuddies to help me with, unless they want to help me pose for a statue, or something. I think I'll try and get the Property Magnate achievement and then restart for a third time, as there's still a few world permutations I've yet to experience. Anyone interested in my exotic collection of legendary weapons?
