OK,

when I was about 8/9 I read a series of books (provided by my school) about a grey cat, I think it was a witches cat, or a magicians, or something, but it was certainly part of the official books about learning to read. I loved them, and just wanted to keep on reading so I knew what happened next.

I cannot for the life of me think of what they were called, but I am pretty sure there is an image of a cat on a broom, in a dark alley with a street lamp lighting the way.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm talking about?

We're talking mid 80s I guess.

Malc

It probably wasn't Meg and Mog, but I'd just like to say I love Meg and Mog.

I think it was Meg and Mog wasn't it? Certainly sounds like it!

Poor Malc, this is all because you looked at my tattoo isn't it? hehe

Mog wasn't grey, more black and white stripey. I have all the Meg and Mog books, from when I was a goff...

Anyone else read the Olga da Polga books? She was a Guinea pig who told tall tales, written by Michael Bond.

I also enjoyed the Moomin books at school.

No, it wasn't meg and mog.

It was about this grey cat (almost definitely a Siamese cat)

I had to google 'Guff the barn owl' and 'Poo the barn owl' before I found the right name, I just remembered that it used to raise a lot of giggles at storytime. Anyway, sorry Spinglo, back to your search, afraid I can't help.

I'm pretty sure you're referring to Sheila K. McCullagh's 'Tim & Tobias' series:

and a bizaare fan site:

Cats are like psycho bitch passive aggressive girlfriends you meet in a bar - you think they're OK and then they move in and never leave. They flirt with everybody who comes to the house and treat you like scum when you're on your own, nagging and clawing for attention and food. They'll even shake they're tushes with the neighbours who find them amusing as they don't see the real beast within, only the polite public persona.

Remember this, if a domestic cat was ten times the size, it'd eat you.

You've absolutely cracked it there. I love it when cat owners try to justify their behaviour, saying 'ah, but you need to earn a cat's respect' as if forking out £500 for it in the first place wasn't enough.

Dogs love unconditionally.

Cats watch... and judge.

OR!

DOG: I love you!!

CAT: I hate you. Now, feed me.

Put your dog, your cat, and your wife in the boot of your car and go for a vigorous cross-country drive. Open the boot. Which one is pleased to see you? That's loyalty, that is.

500?! What the hell? Is that a mini-tiger?
You do have to earn a cats 'love' actually, like anything. Hard work and time spent is all they need really. A cat will only do something if it loves you, mine are not the 'I'm only friendly when I want something' types...well...maybe Bandit a bit, but he's still only a kitten

Fuck that, I demand instant affection and loyalty. Cats should be paying you for their bed and board, not the other way around.

Mine are indoor cats, so they wouldn't bring me anything. They do eat spiders though, which is great! They also all snuggle together on the bed and keep me warm :)
Sooty follows me around all day, loverly :)

I have one of many batty single 30 something female friends with cats and I caught her online one morning at 5am and when I pinged her to find out, one of her cats had brought a live wood pigeon into her bedroom and released it. One of many regular "presents". I'd have been thrilled with that.

It's bad enough when the fuckers wake you up by attacking your feet or by sleeping on you or by knocking your drink over on the bedside table, or by deciding that 4am would be an excellent time to try parading along the mantel shelf knocking things over or by jumping on you, or jumping on you in front of the dog and then digging all their claws into your neck to hang on or by scratching the furniture or by chewing cables or by basically thinking they have a god given right to clamber on any surface or by jumping on you with wet muddy feet or by mewling like a deranged banshee outside your room at night because they're too thick/stupid to push the fucking door open, by parading around the edge of the bath when you're in it and getting the dogs all agitated.

It's all a bit ME ME ME ME with cats and I think women like them because they project the attention secretly hoping that someone will view it as an example of how they would like to be treated or that they're stuck in a cyclical abusive relationship where the cat is playing them for a weak minded mug. Don't get me wrong, I like cats as I do all animals, I have two, and cats like me, but if I come across another fuckwit woman who judges me on whether or not her cats like me I'll scream. They're fucking animals not fucking furball geniuses.

If one of my dogs did that, it would learn not to do it twice.

Well that's a bit sad about the 'cat judging' you thing, that's just weird! My ex hated cats (not the reason he is an ex btw) and that was fine by me. I don't like dogs, he loved them. Doesn't really matter though-just annoys me when people say cats are shit because they do such and such. Not every cat is the same, like dogs-not every one of those is the same.

Plus if I hear someone say, 'You lavish attention on cats because you can't have kids,' I shall deck them! It drives me mad when people stereotype some woman having more than 1 cat. It's got nothing to do with it. I like cats, I don't wheel them round in prams dressed in the latest clothing to make them look all 'cute' and human. It's a bloody animal!
