Join DS: London for the Nintendo DS World record attempt

To celebrate the London Games Festival, DS:London in association with the London Games Festival Fringe, will attempt to break the World record for the most number of people playing a DS at the same time. And we'd like you to help and join in.

Budding record-breakers should bring their Nintendo DS, nicely charged up, and their favourite games to the Rocket Center, 166-220 Holloway Road, N7 8DB on Saturday 25th of October. We need 400 to 500 people to break the record, which stands at a humble 381. This is an official World record attempt with adjudication from Guinness on the day.

The day kicks off at 4pm for registration and pre attempt fun with the record attempt starting at 5pm and All members of the public are welcome. Young or old!

The gaming doesn’t stop there – you’ll have the chance to make new friends, play new games and, most important of all, have fun! Then after wards there will be a pub evening (over 18's only) and the odd bragging rights tournament.

To break the record, we'll need to play our DS consoles for five minutes non-stop – doesn't matter if it's in a linked game or not. Turn up no later than 5pm if you wish to take part in the record attempt.

We'll be joined on the day by the Girl Gamers Tournament. Time and resource allowing there will be a pub quiz (over 18's only) in the evening, we hope to also have some other smaller events such as a raffle or maybe a tournament.

Go to dslondonrecord.net to register on our mailing list for the latest information on what is happening or check out the Facebook event. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=38650501981
This is a free event. We will have a collection on the day for voluntary cash donations that will go to Children In Need.

Wow marketing promotion spam! In order to get the Game Festival event and Nintendo into the free London papers no doubt. (That or a massive sting operation for R4 users. :p ) Saying that I am quite interested in the the Festival.

If we are visible enough for this maybe we'll still have a chance in this years Ram Raiders awards! (JOKE OBV)

Hello AlphaRich! I second The Woody one, how did you find here? (EDIT: Sorry if this came across mean - that wasn't intentional).

I feel we should do something ourselves. Something more BETEO.

I propose we do an Atari Lynx world record attempt. For this we will require three people with Atari Lynx's.

Anyone?

Why the fuck didn't they do it on Friday, when 1,000 game players will be at the Video Games Live concert?

Why the fuck didn't they do it at PAX last year, when 50,000 gamers all brought the DSs and were in the same goddamn hall anyway?

It's also a really crap kind of a record, isn't it? The sort that can be beaten by just getting enough people together - so exactly what one or two people have mentioned, why not do it at x event that has more people anyway. So it's not about setting a real record, just measuring something.

I have a vested interest - in the mid 80s the Guinness Book got all serious about records, so fewer of the "sitting in a bath of beans" type slightly cack endurance things, and more of the "fastest x over 100 metres" and that seems more like what it should be about to me.

Hmmm indeed.

It seems they've Just been turning up places, vomming up that text and pissing off again.

At first I thought it was just some marketing ploy by some PR peeps.

But yeah they appear to have this site DS:London which I would totally call fake on. But it links to here meetup:London Touchers which does seem to be a real site, as it claims to have been going for 2 and a bit years.

It's always a fine line with self promotion. Making your first post somewhere being whoreage, then pissing off again without even introducing yourself beyond a ctrl+V is way past it in my book. Could of at least said hello.

Hmm and these "new members" on this 'meetup' site.

Quote:
"“Hi Rich, I really enjoy playing the Nintendo DS and want to meet more people to share this with, as I don't know many who own one. This World Record attempt sounds hugely exciting and I would love to be a be a part of it. Ninty Rocks! Cheers, Josh.”

Quote:
“Hey Welcome!! Hope to beat you in EBA soon..hehhehe. Hey Minh, I did not know you liked rhythm games as well... we've not played them a lot lately. We have to talk about it in the next meet :)

Quote:
“Hey, I'm Dave and I'm looking to meet new people. I love my DS and would just like to get together and play games.”

Quote:
“Getting together and playing games?! What the hell could be better?”

Are all different people. Except they all read like one awful PR person pretending to me. Though I could just be being my usual cynical paranoid self.

FAKE EDIT: Looking through the forum it seems to be old and hence legit. Bizzare...

EDIT EDIT: No it's defo real. It's just got a 'tone' I've never seen on the internet before.

I took part in the Worlds longest paperchain in the eighties. It was on record breakers and everything. But being a Sunday Roy Castle stayed at home tap dancing whilst playing the trumpet and passive smoking.

Is that poor taste?

It's got to be 5 continous minutes to count though, there is no way the batteries would last. Unless we all hung out near a power supply all day. Like the post kid a school who would bring his in on the last day of school, whilst your playing Screwball Scramble but you've lost the top bit of the maze.... [/Peter Kay]

Ah, again a useless record, whioch noone will care about, maybe a record should onlt be admitted if it has been set by different competing groups.. i mean putitng dominoes in a row was at first a non event, but it became a real record after people had tried to break it and got it bigger and bigger..

Well I'm one person with three lynxes (no idea what the plural of lynx is.. mind you, Atari probably didn't either) - does that count?

If they are original models then I suspect they have to be stored in Wembley stadium due to the width. :DD

I propose an attempt to beat the "Number of People playing an Amstrad GX4000 at the same time" world record.

Basically, we just need chinnyhill10 to switch a GX4000 on for 10 minutes in the presence of a Guinness adjudicator and we're golden.

That would be gold.

Also excellent would be turning up with an official-looking 'Guinness Adjudicator' badge and just wandering around disqualifying people for things like 'owning Tomb Raider Legend DS'.

The main problem with water balloons is their tendency to burst very easily - usually over your head if you're attempting to throw them. You can put piss in yours if you like - I'll stick with water.

Apologies.

That was a shameful and selfish act of spammage there and I humbly apologise. I've been meaning to come back here and participate in a positive fashion like the dedicated gamer I am. A year and a half later and I'm finally doing that. Shit, I know.

For those that cared, the record atempt was a bust. But we had a good time. I'm not the organiser of DS London anymore, its too 2008 for me.

And for what it's worth, I'd be up for a Lynx record attempt anytime.
