When I started my new job, one of the colleagues I was due to work with, and indeed still have to speak to occasionally, knew all about me, because the weirdass little fucker had googled me. He found PTS, my running page, and had read it all. The fucking freak.

It's for this reason my facebook privacy settings are max. Even my friends can barely see me.

Therefore, anything the person has made publically available is fair game, which if they're clever extends to nothing more than their name and a profile pic thumbnail.

He'll love reading this then...

My girlfriend's company's HR department use FB when hiring people to see how much they lie on their CV, etc. They have turned a number of people down based upon FB data apparently.

Big debate in HR about this at the moment (CG knows this already as he knows me better than I do). I don't like it personally. I mean a lot of people (inlcuding me) draw a strong distinction between work and play. I think you should go off what you see in an interview / work environment.

Also, I'm not 100% clear how you can uncover CV lies on Facebook? Maybe job or reason for leaving. I'd be interested to hear what they have uncovered.

Don't get too spooked. The lame bastard just asked me. Meanwhile I once sent him an unsolicited pic of his feyonce. He fails at cyberstalking, whereas I piss excellence[1].

The FB/job app thing is interesting. I think we're in a transition period; our generation is comfortable revealing stuff online, drunken photos and such, that the generation above us are horrified at; even though everyone is doing it. Also, I'm guessing you can't admit that you didn't hire someone because of Facebook.

I'm a smart man's stalker. Rather than quizzing Google it's way faster and easier just to ask someone who knows you. Offer the Dr. some curry and he'll tell you whatever you want to know.

A lot of companies look at FB status updates to see if people are lying through their teeth about, say, being ill, too.

"Katania is lying to work about being ill.... so long suckers!"

It scares me to think that in 25 years time the people running the country (and probably others too) are going to be the Facebook/Myspace generation.

I don't want to live in a world where the person responsible for pressing "the" button grew up playing Command & Conquer or DEFCON.

Anyone who lies on a CV and broadcasts the fact on FB deserves not to get the job.

I don't know the full details of it, but basically I think one of them said something in the interview, and when searched for on FB, it was found to be a blatant lie.

I think another one was something really stupid aswell, like:

"William has just spent an hour bullshitting in an interview" Or somesuch.




As long as they don't think to check my Live status, I should be okay!

This is exactly why I *didn't* want to add my team leader as a friend.

Yeah, if a CV lists a current occupation as 'print media distribution executive' and his FB profile says 'paper boy', you know he's guilding the lilly.

This thread has thrown up more reasons why I don't use Facebook.

The other likely trip-up is past academic institutions. A lot of users join groups or network for places they went to school/college. If his CV says Oxbridge and his FB profile says Grimsby Community College, you're unlikely to give him a job.

The alternative of course might be to NOT lie on your CV and not pull fake sickies in the first place.

I have two younger brothers (in law) who are 18 and 17. A year or so ago we were talking about porn, and I was telling them that when I was their age porn was really hard to get hold of - videos were shared around school and stuff like that. They, obviously, have access to all the boobage they want thanks to the Internet. I asked them if they felt somewhat let down by sex, as it's nothing like porn films. They looked at me blankly for a bit, and further investigation revealed that because all the girls are watching the same porn, that's their generations sex education, so that's the way they have sex.
