A bit of a cheat this, always liked that Housemartin's track. If videos counted it'd be by even more.

The last track hasn't been chosen - do we vote or not?

I knew three of the songs from this one already, they were better than the others so they got my vote.

I was going to offer an opportunity for anyone who hadn't picked a song in time to add it partway through the voting. However, I've since been told that amending a poll once it starts resets all the votes, so that option is off the table.

That's Group B done, whew. It does feel a bit cheaty to have such a well-known song in the mix, but there's nowt you can do about that - it's well within the rules. Familarity is always going to win (unless you hate it).

I very, very nearly chose Take A Bow by Rihanna which was in the charts only a few weeks ago, which is not the sort of song I like but I liked it lots and lots.
Here, have a listen:

Yeah it's a really good song. I actually really like Rihanna's first album a lot.

You think? I'd be more tempted to vote for a new song that I really liked rather than an old favourite.

I am generalising - I personally agree with you. However, I didn't find anything better in the other offerings. Perhaps the fact that it's just a really awesome song means it should win.

B'oh!

I PM'd you before I read this. Shame I missed out. I've had my plate full with stuff of late and my eyes could not muster the energy to clamber up to scan the top of the forum screen. :(

I'd love to take part next time though, for sure. I'm slightly angry at myself for stupidly missing this one. And top marks by the way on how you've laid this out, it's really neat.

Oh, and its a tricky one, but I've always adored that Magazine song there. So probably that one. *Mulls*

Oh.. there is a second round isn't there? I'm pretty stupid right now. I think I ought to go to bed. YES.

Indeed, the second round kicks off next Wednesday, so you can still take part in 90% of the song-related combat. Just get a choice of cover version PM'ed to me by 23:59 Tuesday.

While I'm posting, I would just like to state that I can't get enough of that track by The Saints. A brilliant song I can't believe I hadn't heard before now.

The Saints track is one I particularly dislike. I am a world of hate and misery.

I'm pretty sure I gave The Saints one the full marks in my vote. It's cool.

Never heard The Saints before, and I quite liked them.

THIS IS THE POWER OF SONG WAR!

I gave The Saints 2 marks, I think. TMBG just pipped them for me.

I do like that song a lot, but am a bit sick of it due to it being over-played over the last 15 years or so. Was on the radio just a few hours ago, in fact. Still a good song, though.

Has anyone heard their recent albums? Worth getting?

I think the best bit about this is going to be revealing who picked each song, and then having them say a bit about the song and band and why they picked it etc. Also, recommendations for more stuff to listen to by them.

This is by some distance my favourite group of songs- not one rotter in there, and the only set where I had more than 3 on my shortlist to vote for. I'll definitely be checking out more of the Saints, They Might be Giants and the Dismemberment Plan.

Loud clapping and a drunken "woo!" for all involved.

They broke up in 1994, then reformed 2000-2006

In the event of a draw, the tie-breaker goes to the song I've not heard before. Sorry, Stuffies.
