I went to Tesco last night (with Shin) to buy an answering machine. As I was there, I noticed they were selling those Acer Aspire One mini-notebooks for £248, with the 120GB hard drive.

I ummed and arred, and then decided to buy one (as my Nan left me £1,000 in her will and said I had to spend it on either a "bloody good holiday" (which I've just had) or "nice things").

So I took the empty box to the checkout and the guy went off to the back storage room to get it.

He eventually came back carrying a much bigger box than I expected and handed that to me. I asked him if it was the right one (the box had Acer Aspire written on it, at least) and he assured me it was, so off I trundled.

As I was walking out of the door, I took a glance at the specs on the side and noticed it said it had a 160GB hard drive in it. The processor was also an Intel Centrino Dual Xeon or something-or-other, so I knew it wasn't the right one.

What would you do in this situation?

See the poll above for potential answers.

I chose the honest option and told him it was wrong and he fetched me the correct one.

Hmm, tricky. If he already confirmed once that it was the right one, then I'd probably have taken it home and used it. It wouldn't be going on no eBay or shit, though.

Having attempted to clarify it once, I wouldn't object to taking the better one home if the salesperson insisted on giving it to me.

I ordered an Acer from the website and they set me the next model up from the one they charged me for. Kept it, obv.

I'm a grasping twat, so I probably would've taken it.

Yes, I'm afraid I agree with Mr Ultrabrilliant. I'd like to think I'm an honest, decent person, but then I would be lying to myself. Which would make me deceitful, also.

I thought Tesco had a policy where if they mess up at the till, you get your money back and the item in question?

Granted it's normally for packets of cornflakes and loaves of bread, but still...

No, it was a proper sized laptop. Which wasn't the reason I gave it back (simply because I'm honest, unlike the rest of you fuckers, so it seems :P)

Although having a proper-sized laptop when you want a mini one does kind of defeat the object.

Ooo tricky.

If it was a straight laptop for a laptop then I think I would keep the high spec one.

However, I would buying a mini-notebook because it was a mini-notebook and not a a normal size notebook. Therefore I would take it back and get the mini-notebook I so desire :luv:

I wouldn't want the hassle of trying to sell it.

When I had my car repaired, they told me it was £225 cheaper than I had been originally quoted... as they'd left half the repairs off the bill. It was only when I queried it that the little tart went and spoke to the manager (for about 5 minutes) and he came out personally to tell me yes, it was in fact £425, not £200.

In this case, given you weren't sure but asked, and he said yes, I'd probably have just carried on.

It was more expensive though, you could have sold it or something. I am actually really sorry that I sort of completely went mad at the tills to you though, your face was extremely funny though.

I'd have probably looked uncomfortable for a moment gone red when thinking about taking it then told them it was wrong one.

You've checked. That's more than enough frankly.

If it was a small local shop you should own up, but fuck Tesco. By giving it back you've not been able to strike a blow at "the man".

It was this one: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-6256.aspx

Not dual Xeons, but I haven't kept up with CPU technology for years so it all sounds the same to me these days.

I would have taken it. Then left it in my car and gone in to try it again, and again.

Only the other week a mate and me went for a slap up ruby - starters, nan bread, main dish, two bottles of Cobra each, the works. When we went to pay, the guy asked us for £6.20! We looked at each other, rummaged for change, paid and then sprinted (as well as we could with a bellyful of tandori chicken) off down the road. Yes, it was the wrong thing to do but...I don't really care.

On reflection, despite thinking I'd 'ave 'ad it, I'd have taken it back cos that's a pretty standard 15" laptop rather than the snazzy 9 incher you were going for.

Still and all, I might have got it home before deciding that, and then I'd have checked the "we messed up" policy and tried customer services on the phone first...

I'd have taken it, looked at it, then if it wasn't really what I wanted sell it and buy what I wanted originally.

If you've checked and the salesperson doesn't care enough to check properly, tough cookies.

There are two decision here. The first is probably the more interesting.

Buy it / be honest: I'd buy it every time.
Keep it / sell it and buy smaller notebook: depends on lots of stuff.

I'd have done what you did, I want a small laptop, not a hulk-o-laptop.

If it was the same machine but with a bigger HD I'd have assumed it was a replacement model.

I'd have kept it and considered it karmic payback for all the times that, eg, McDonalds charged me for something they forgot to put in the bag.

It's like refereeing decisions. Over a long period, the ones that go for you even out the ones that go against you.

Except he wanted a mini laptop and they gave him a big one. It's not a better version of what he paid for, it's a completely different product.

Yes you MIGHT (but probably not) be able to make a few quid flogging it on but you're still without what you actually wanted.

I ordered a pricey wireless router from an independent online retailer and they accidentally sent two out, but didn't seem to notice. In this instance I felt bad 'cause they were a small company and their service was really good, so I had it couriered back at my own expense.

Figure I can pull that one out of the bag on judgement day. "What do you mean you're not letting me in? What about the router! THE ROUTER!"

The router that was then subsequently sold on to a terrorist cell?

Back in the day of Special Reserve I ordered a 56k modem off them. They sent it but it was left outside the door so we said we never got it. They sent another, and left it outside the door, and we never got it. We ended up with 3 modems and a free game for our trouble.

I am a naughty man.

You're a better man than me then. I ordered a Xbox camera from a small online retailer and got the camera, 200 points and a year's Live subscription, I kept it and not only that I posted about my good fortune on here whereupon some others ordered the camera and got the same thing.

A friend of mine got a fancy computerised telescope as a present from his girlfriend, costing in the region of £1500.

It wouldn't work on arrival, so he rang the company up. They sent a new one out, but didn't bother asking for the old one back :S He reckons it only needs the firmware flashing or something. Ace.

Not sure what I'd have done with the laptop. If I really wanted the smaller one, I'd have just taken it back. No sense getting something you didn't want, even if it makes you a little money. Unless you're a shop, I guess.
