'Allo,

I tend to run about 2 or 3 years behind the times with PC games*, as I upgrade on the cheap to whatever was TEH AWESOMES a couple of years ago, and then buy the games from back then that will run on fullgraffixsplendourisma on it. Consequently I currently have an excellent collection of older games, many of which have multiplayer optiins, but a declining or non-existant online base to play on. As I mentioned elsewhere, Fallout Tactics, for instance, has approximately two people who still play it on GameSpy.

The new wonderousness of GoG will only increase this colleciton, I fear.

So: in the manner of Sheepeh's Rando-Bezzie-Night action, and inspired by the DEFCON-age, would anyone be interested in some slightly old-school PC online gamery?

The sorts of things I had in mind were:

Medal of Honour
Soldiers: Heroes of WW2
Il-2 Sturmovich
BF1942
BF2
Fallout: Tactics
Operation Flashpoint
Act of War
Dawn of War (this was awesomes with Grim and NervousPete)

And so on.

So, anyone interested in such a thing? And are there any other wonderful online games that would run on a 2.8ghz-era PC that should be on the list and which I should purchase forthwith for such Bezzie-age?

*and about 30 years with fashion, yes Zardoz.

What games *do* you have, chap? Suggest away! If they're awesomes I'll pick them up from GoG.

Thanks for that, fuckface. Piss off and play on Live then. Oh wait, you can't, cos it's borked.

;)

You know you want to really.

Err, PC games that I have that are multiplayer and that will run on my laptop:

X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
Half-Life Deathmatch/Deathmatch Classic/Counter-Strike
DEFCON
Football Manager 2006/2007/2008

I'm really struggling to think of any others. :(

XvTie is excellent.

Have you tried X-Wing alliance? It should probably run if XvT does, and is brillo.

Yeah I've got that, too. I didn't realise it had multiplayer, though.

It does, and obviously has a massive selection of ships to play with (all of the ingame ones, basically, except for capital ships)

I would love to play BF1942: Forgotten Hope or Operation Flashpoint: MFCTI again... but I think my Windows laptop is dead forever. I'll check again and see if it's healed itself.

I have a Dell laptop very similar to yours you can have if you want, either to use as-is or for spares. In fact I have two, although I think only one has a hard disk or any RAM.

Yeah, you have an 8100 or something, don't you?

I'm not sure what the hell is wrong... I'll have to Google later to find out what it doing what it's doing are symptoms of.

Is it worth it with just two players though? This is a problem we might encounter.

I have a pair of 8200s, I think they are. They both have the 1400x1050 screens on which is nice. One has a GeForce, the other a Radeon; I think the glidepads are broken on both of them (common problem on those). One is a 1Gb PIII and the other a 933Mhz I think. They may not have much RAM. I have a 512Mb DIMM somewhere, maybe in one of them.

I'll swap the pair for your iBook :D

No way... much as I'm tempted to replace the iBook with a Macbook, I just spent £80 on a new battery for it.

I have loads and loads of games, but the ones I can play without having to reboot are :

Quake 4
Enemy Territory : Quake Wars
Enemy Territory : Wolfenstein
EVE
Team Fortress
Team Fortess 2
Counterstrike
Counterstrike Source
World of Warcraft
Lordy Lordy Online
Pretty Much All The Half Life Stuff
Supreme Commander
The C&C Series
Company of Heroes
The Unreal Series

Probably more I've forgotten about but that should be enough.

You'd be better off using TASpring these days, mind.

I would be up for retro-stylee action. However, I am pretty rubbish at getting this sort of thing together, so don;t count on me ever turning up / getting the darn things to run.

I would be well up for some more Dawn of War, and, though I'm worrying myself just by typing this, I'd quite like to play some Counter Strike.

I have not played countrer strike before. I've played HL1's TFC, though. CS could presumably be great if we had a private server?

I do own Diablo II, but it doesn't run properly in Linux. It also doesn't install properly in 64 bit XP. Them's a lot of faffing.

Yep, if we had enough people. That's the problem with wanting to play these older games.

I think Counter Strike is still the most popular online game at the moment.

We're talking about a private server though. Chris, you and I wouldn't be enough for a decent game.

Runcs: all Champ/Foot Man games are basically playing Excel!

(I used to play the Amiga version though - this one is running on an old laptop with me holding the power lead in long enough for me to get a photo)

If you HAX the configuration files you can play as the capital ships as well, but it's not a good idea. If you pick the Star Destroyer, you control one of the turbolaser turrets and you can barely move.
