There's been some mention of this in the "What are you playing now?" thread but I think it deserves its own as it's a bit notable in its own right and I know there's a few folks playing it.

Valheim is a survival/building game in Early Access on Steam. It's been out there for almost exactly a month, and yesterday it hit 5 million sales, which is just astonishing - it's also up to number 2 on the Steam concurrent players list. The premise of the game is fairly simple - you're a dead Viking who's been tasked by Odin to enter the realm of Valheim, where some big bad guys are hanging around. You gather resources, build weapons, housing, armour, and snacks, and you head out and smite 5 (currently, with more planned) big mythic beasties to defeat which in turn unlock new paths to progress - new crafting materials, or tools that help you to expand your exploration.

The game world is progressively generated and split into biomes that are progressively more dangerous as you explore further away from where you start. More vital resources are found in further away biomes, encouraging exploration and taking risk with tougher enemies but the general pace of the game is pleasantly sedate. You can happily while away hours building things in the starting biome with the only real opponents being mild nuisance creatures and the crafting/building aspect of the game is really well fleshed out - the game happily lets you choose between being an explorer seeking out tough fights for valuable rewards or just someone who builds a nice cottage and grows carrots. Food in the game represents buffs which are super important for health and stamina to let you survive tricky combat, but you'll never starve so there is no desperate need to be constantly grinding for food. The environment is almost fully destructable, making it easy to make use of the land for building and the majority of construction resources you need are easy to come by.

Go play it! It's fun, it's cheap (£15.49), and you can be a super pro Viking dude.

I was well obsessed with this for 100 hours or so, but that third boss in the swamps can fuck right off. Endlessly generating poison and mobs while also healing any damage you've done to it? Cheesy bobbins.

I can flex my stead though. As that's all I'm working on since I need the drop from the third boss to find silver.

Cosy. But I wish the furnishing bonus had a bigger radius. I miss out on the full force of 18 comfort due to space.

Fancy stuff!

There's a fair few mods on nexusmods that have nice quality of life benefits without changing gameplay. Comfort range is definitely one of them.

They've gone an interesting route - the textures are all pretty low poly but they've heavily invested in lighting and effects. It's a really lovely looking game and I guess they've saved a load of money on artists

I didn’t realise it was only £15! I could be tempted. The last £15 multiplayer game I bought was Deep Rock Galactic and I’ve sunk 200+ hours into that and still going strong.

Yeah, it's a gorgeous game - some of the lighting is obscenely beautiful.

Weirdly though, and I assume this is due to some of the shaders or whatever in use, but the lighting doesn't seem to look half as nice in static screenshots as it does in motion.

I’ve set up a (very flakey) dedicated server for this. If anyone wants to take a poke around Beexgard then please PM me for the details. I just ask that you don’t go around destroying any (obviously) player-made structures and generally treat the place with respect.

Also please don’t pass on the details to anyone else as it’s creaky at the best of times and I’d like to manage player numbers until it’s a bit more stable.

Server seems pretty solid this morning. Had 90 minutes or so without having to log off and on constantly. I've put a chest in the middle of the village with the food I scavenged during that time.

What a lovely place. I like the big building that looks like an inn. I left some sausages in the box in the middle of town.

Also pro tip - the Valheim 'connect to server' page is arse, but in Steam you can go to View->Servers and add a favourite server in there, then you can launch Valheim and connect straight to a server by double-clicking on it in the list in the steam servers window

That didn’t work for me either. Just says server not connected.

-edit- oh wait, I didn’t do it when Valheim was launched. I’ll try that later.

Still doesn't seem to work for me. Am I just doing it wrong or...? @cras

I've tried adding it but it doesn't seem to connect when I try using it.

It says enter the IP Address but you do need the IP Address and port - so XX.XX.XX.XX:2456

Well, the mod that allows you to pull from nearby containers when crafting/building/smelting etc. is a fucking pro-click.

I concur, so I cheesed him back. He's got no ranged attack other than his AoE poison, so I found a tree near his spawn that he can't knock down, built ladders up it to a point out of his reach, built a nice platform to stand on, and filled him with arrows until his shoes came off. Bring a lot of arrows and a spare bow.

Nice tippage. I heard that a good strat is to use the top of the skull at the sacrifice site, as he can't destroy that.

They were just lying about on the ground so I popped them in the chest in my shack for safekeeping until someone claimed them. Feel free to grab them, I wasn’t even sure what they were.

Nah, you can keep em, I've gone and harvested another 25. I deliberately left my smeltery outside the ward so anyone could use them, but I've rebuilt them around the back of my house now.

We have had a few instances of things outside just being destroyed.

Myo then put a "roof" on to of his that I then say repairing as it was constantly being heavily damaged in the rain

Most things that aren't under a roof get damaged by weather down to 50% but never any lower than that.

Also stone buildings don't take rain damage. I suppose a grayling may have spawned in the village, but it seems strange that it'd target just those three buildings and not damage anything else.

I've got a couple of charcoal kilns and a few smelters outside my secondary base (in a clearing in the Meadows) and greylings are constantly spawning on one side specifically and then coming over and attacking just the kilns - never anything else.

It’s weird, on closer inspection I ended up with the bits in my inventory so the game must have thought I’d destroyed them, but I definitely didn’t

They hate fire. Greylings/Greydwarves will make a beeline for torches/campfires/bonfires/smelters/kilns.

Indeed I use torches on the inside of my drawbridge to pull em onto the spikes.

ANYWAY! I have made a fancy crafting shed by the docks for people to use.

We just (ish) had a dwarf raid on the village, so I'm guessing that the 1st boss has been done then.

You get wrong password because nobhead chose an extremely annoying password. For one thing, the "..." is part of the password, secondly if you're unsure whether there's an 'O' or a zero, it's a zero.

You get wrong password because nobhead chose an extremely annoying password. For one thing, the "..." is part of the password, secondly if you're unsure whether there's an 'O' or a zero, it's a zero.

I did a cut and paste. I will try again later.. Cheers

Normally when I do complex passwords I use four normal words with spaces, but the way to set this server up is by using a batch file so I didn’t have any faith that they would work. If you think that password is difficult then I’m assuming all your passwords are “password123”
