On my travels around the internet I came across an alleged C64 port of the Simpsons Arcade. It looks amazing but I’d never even heard of a port to the trusty breadbin. I’ve tried to find details about it, like, in what region it was released or a picture of the original box/tape/insides but I’m none the wiser. I used to love the arcade OG like pretty much everyone and I was a C64 owner so I’m surprised I’d never heard of it until 30 years later after it’s supposed release. Does anyone remember this at all?

That’ll be why then - I didn’t think it had come to the U.K. I’m surprised that someone like US Gold didn’t try and bring it over here given how great it looks but maybe it was a mess of licenses with Konami and the Simpsons or maybe the C64 just wasn’t viable in 1991. Presumably most people had moved onto the Amiga.

Today I discovered the Sega Arcade website where you can buy various arcade machines. Their Home Games section seems rather optimistic about what they consider 'home-ready', like the 75" screen of Centipede

I reckon I’ve found the first ever micro transaction in a game: Double Dragon 3. It charged you money for power ups right from the first shop.

That’s more of a continue rather an MTX I’d say. Double Dragon charged money for power ups to make the game easier.

EDIT: mind you, just watched a very brief playthrough and didn’t see any MTXalikes in the shops. What was the MTX aspect?

you don't get to a shoppe until quite a far way in where you can pay for cloaks and health potions.

Shops are at the end of each level and you pay in gold you collect in the game from what I saw. There’s not many videos of it but this is what I was looking at. From memory Double Dragon 3 started you off as a normal fighter and the first shop is pretty much straight away and you can pay coins or lives to get buffed up
So you put your 20p in - went to the shop - used your spare 2 lives to buff you to a more powerful character and then only had 1 life , or you could put 10p more in to get that in the shop directly

I do remember it being a bit of a rip off at the time.

Wardner has the shop but i did not think you could pay real money for it - just coins you earned in game ?

You may just be thinking of pumping more money in to continue playing (continue play for extra credits has been in games from much further back)

The original Street Fighter sucks an inordinate amount of dick. Took me 30 minutes to get to the fifth character who just wipes you out in two hits. And why the fuck can’t you block some moves from some characters? I can’t fathom how this managed to even get a second instalment.

From memory, the computer versions were called Salamander, but the NES version was called Life Force. I'm sure wikipedia probably knows why.
Presumably the same reason as Nemesis/Gradius?

Now this is cool AF. There’s a Your Sinclair review of Afterburner which says “at a pound a pop it’s a bit expensive”. Man, I remember when arcades started jacking up the price for these huge hydraulic machines!

(On the same page Operation Wold says 30p a go or 5 goes for a quid... ahh those were the days).
