Boy, but the barristers would like to think so. :)

What is the actual difference between the two?

One makes coffee.

One has people to make coffee, yes. You get better service at a solicitor's office than in chambers in my experience. And far better biscuits. It must be their public school background that makes them eat nothing but digestives.

Grim... - traditionally the difference was that barristers were the only ones who could go to court, and that's all they did. Solicitors did everything else legal (drafting contracts, selling houses, wills etc), and also did the "instructing" on cases going to court, by basically doing the barrister's preparation work for them. The barrister then just turned up in court and argued your case for you.

The situation's much the same now, but we solicitors were granted higher audience rights yonks ago, so now a lot of solicitors' firms have their own "solicitor advocates" who go do the court work (I have done a very small bit of this myself previously).

Barristers also expanded their practices a bit by being alleged "experts" on various things, so if you wanted as definitive an answer as you could get on a point of law without going to court over it, you would get a barrister to write a "counsel's opinion".

I was a bit worried when I couldn't fit myself in with anything on the list at the top of this thread, and had to check to make sure I actually do exist. What of people like me, who read The Guardian, but don't earn enough to buy any of the things advertised in it? Luckily, the list here goes into a little bit more depth.

Quote:
C1 - Lower Middle Class - Supervisory or clerical and junior managerial, administrative or professional

Is probably the closest one for me, but it's a bit rubbish how it categorises people based entirely on their job. A lot of people work to fund their lifestyle and/or family, and nothing more - there's nothing inherently wrong about not wanting to clamber your way to the top of the corporate ladder.

Someone could have a degree from Oxford, go around restoring statues or antiques for a living, and technically be classified as a C2 - so as far as marketing people are concerned, the sort of person to laugh uproariously upon seeing a clip of Roy Chubby Brown having a go at 'the darkies' while muttering "too bloody right" under their breath or buy a pie because Patrick McGuinness advertises it.

I reckon the Social Grade classification should be based entirely on people's DVD collections.

When the voting is completed, will all BeeXers be expected to stand in descending order of height in order to re-enact this?

Really? Lumping together all students seems kind of broken.

I would say I am from a upper-lower-middle class background, but the socio-economic breakdown of just my circle of friends at uni is incredibly broad, never mind all students.

You hear that? We can take you anytime we get the urge, fuckers.

I suppose I am both C1 and D, depending on the day of the week, and what exactly I'm doing on C1 day. Heavans, it's almost as though these arbitrary bureaucratic categories don't work when applied to real people.

Also, since when was a supervisor anything remotely as skilled, demanding or desirable as being a nurse or police officer? Tchah, I say. Tchah.

I love the fact that only one person has voted 'myoptika'. On any other fourm, that would have got fifty LULLOL OMG votes.

what's a lower civil servant? i guess i'm 'b' reeagarding to the autonomy etc.. but this seems like a very british list, with these old fashioned classes and stuff (and many middle classes), these day it is far more mixed and creative professionals don't really fit in as income ...

far more interesting are things like motivaction's 8 way segmentation, also for advertisers, but also to see how a community is build up,

I put C2 (menial graphic design work), but I really don't think what you do for a living is a very good indicator of class. You get loads of cockney wide-boy company directors for example, making shed-loads of money and driving round in garish BMWs, but I'd hardly say they were upper class.

These are produced for the sake of advertisers.

If they're buying expensive cars, they're certainly not D.

My family are C2 styles, but I fled them, went to University and now have a B style job, though I've only just started it.
edit: Actually, thinking about it, my family were more C1. Damn! I only moved 1 up over them.

T be honest, if you say 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' when pronouncing the letter 'h', you are never going to be above C2, even if you marry The Queen, get ordained and cure cancer.

Job does not = class, or we'd not have seen both Ken and Boris in the same role.

Class and demographic aren't the same thing though.

Demographic is used frequently in advertising, for example, so you can decide who to sell suits to. Do you think Ken Livingstone wears the same make of suits as Johnny Coal Miner?
