HDR works amazing, it's this mark behind the glass that isn't so amazing.

I'm running in HDR mode, that's probably what caused the problem.

I need a new pc, my old ones too shit.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional ... ctupt=true

I do want to be able to play games on it like no mans sky or those extremely enticing looking factory games that others here play and make me feel jealous.

Why would this be actually a bad idea?

A PC with a 1050Ti isn’t a 4K gaming machine IMO. You want at least a 1080Ti for that.

hmm, will that matter if I'm not using a 4k monitor? I'm not really that bothered for resolution as long as it runs the games smoothly

It's not a terrible price, but a few observations:

120GB SSD and no other hard drive means it'll fill up pretty quickly.
8GB of RAM a bit limiting these days, but easily upgradable.
The 1050... it'll be ok. But like Mop said, no 4k for you.

If you buy it, get the windows code from him, or you'll just have to buy a new one when you inevitably have to reinstall

It’s ok, just not a great spec and the seller is overegging its capabilities. I’d just be wary of buying a second-hand PC in general, for all sorts of reasons.

I'm playing Satisfactory with an Intel onboard graphics card. Settings turned right down for sure, but that don't bother me.

alright, thanks all.

I've got some bigger spinny drives lying around already that I can presumably just plug in and as mentioned, 4k isn't a major attraction.

sounds like theres nothing seriously daft about it that'll trip me up other than buying things on ebay is risky.

Here I goooooooo...

I would personally ditch any HDD if I bought a PC second hand as you have no idea what’s been on it before.

I've been offered a £40 voucher if I keep the monitor. I've turned down their very generous offer and asked for it to be collected and refunded in full.

Thought I'd try stellaris for the first time on the train home last night. 30 minutes of reading dense UI later, still none the wiser as to what I'm actually meant to be doing.

Bewildering.

49" 4k at normal monitor distances might look a bit rough. I think that's about 85-90 dpi, which isn't great. Also you'll have to turn your head a hell of a lot. I love my 40" but I wouldn't go much above that, personally.

Unless you just mount it back a bit from the desk, that would help, but then what's the point?.

I'm running a 32" 1080p at normal monitor distance at the moment, so in theory it should be better dpi than that?

I've decided to be sensible, and go for a tiny 43" screen, with HDR to keep mop happy.

I’ve already got HDR. You’re the one who won’t be happy

Is HDR support on PC games good now? Last I looked it was a shitshow of incompatibilities and driver fuckery.

It works fine on the games that support it. It’s just a bit thin on the ground.

Everything is so big, yet so small at the same time, man.

Ended up getting an LG 43UK6400 for £319. Which was too good a deal to turn down.
Not strictly a monitor, but with all the picture processing gumpf turned of and set to game mode, it's pretty damn close. If I get on with the size I might look at upgrading to a "proper" monitor, but i'm not actually sure the extra cost is worth it. What do you get from 4k monitor that you don't get from a 4k TV?

Not a great deal. My Philips is mildly curved, which is nice on such a large screen. USB hubs. Don't have to use a remote control to switch inputs. DisplayPort inputs are nice to have -- some things (like Macs) can be arseholes about 4k60 over HDMI.

This'll do me for a bit...

The only issue with going for a cheaper 4k TV I've found, is the backlight isn't a uniform brightness across the screen, the corners are a bit dimmer than the centre.

Don't you have to move your head around just to see each end of it? And if so, wouldn't that get really annoying, very quickly?

I've 'only' got a 32 inch screen, and that's about at the limit of comfortable use for me I reckon.

Not particularly, it's surprisingly comfortable. You move your eyes a lot more, but not your head. I guess it depends quite how close you sit.

Fucking curved. I used to spend hours trying to fix convergence and geometry on my old CRT and rear projection TVs, no way I'm purposely picking up a curved screen!

Those blue shiny bits in the background - that's oxygen. The muddy brown stuff is CO2, and it all behaves as it should. Fucking game is great.

Started playing Sunless Skies on my commute, then realised it hadn't saved any of my progress. It allowed me to Quit to desktop without warning me I'd lose my progress, so I assumed it just saved constantly.

Hearthly would fucking hate it.

From Steam forum:

Quote:
sunless skies does not have manual saves at all. Your game is saved automatically every time you do things in a port. any things. More or less, whenever you click a button in a port, it saves.
You can quit to the menu and load at any time, you can also reload if you die, but you can't specifically save. The game never/cannot save outside of a port, so anything you do after leaving a port is lost if you don't make it to another one.

I'll be honest, this sounds less than ideal for playing on the train and closing the laptop when your station comes, but I'm going to persevere. The writing is truly excellent.
