He's allegedly supposed to be up in court today; is that not massively unusually fast to be in court the same day you're arrested? I find it especially odd that no one seems to know what he's been arrested for given how quickly it's moving.

And as surely as night follows day, the leader of the SNP gets up and talks about laying the groundwork for a new referendum.

Guardian:
Quote:
In a long-awaited statement to the Scottish parliament on her plans, Sturgeon said the proposed legislation would set out how a new referendum would be held if Holyrood were granted the powers to stage one.

I understand why she has to do this, as you need to throw bones to your supporters from time to time to satisfy their appetite. I doubt they'll get the requisite powers to do so under the current administration in London, however.

Brexit is a massive event in the UKs political landscape and might very well change a lot of people's minds in terms of Scottish independence so it makes sense to think about it. It's just a shame we didn't have any idea David Cameron was going to suddenly fuck the country in the ass not two years later or it would've made more sense to have an independence referendum after Brexit. I do realise though that any talk of another independence referendum will rile up the people who hoped the whole thing was done and dusted.

We’re definitely moving north if we leave the EU with no deal and Scotland votes for independence.

Aye. Especially as 'stay in the EU' was one of the stronger arguments.

It's also probably hard for anyone in Scotland not to see how influential Ireland has been during the whole Brexit thing within the EU and how supportive the organisation has been towards it, suggesting that small countries can punch above their weight within the institutions.

Unless the Brexit thing is ditched (quite unlikely) and we get major restructuring and rebalancing of the consitution (very unlikely), I fully understand why Scotland would want to leave and would no longer shed a tear. We're at the seperate bedrooms stage of the relationship, I think.

We would prefer not to, considering our increasingly ageing respective parents are south from where we are now, but we have to think more of our future.

Every time I stay at a YHA I look at the wallmap of their network and think there's something odd about the missing 'head' of the island. Guess it's something I'm going to have to get used to.

Don’t think it’ll disappear, champ. Unless there’s a yet-to-be discovered tectonic plate running along Hadrian’s Wall.

Scotland will just be greyed out like the option you need to use in a Windows app.

Funny you should say that! Hadrian's wall runs down the line where two ancient plates collided. I'll find a source

Even if Brexit fucks us all I still wouldn't confidently predict any independence referendum result. There's a lot of general fear of change in large chunks of the populace but, sadly, there's also all the fuckwits that will vote for a union purely because their religion/football team affiliation/Orange fucking lodge membership compels them to. It was only during the last referendum that I came to realise quite how much sway that axis has over people's political opinions and it's fucking embarrassing, tragic and enraging in equal measure. Unquestioning political groupthink is fucking bullshit whatever the reasons but there's something about the football/religion angle that's especially fucking galling to me.

Reading on from there suggests a further collusion:

Acadian Orogeny (my new bandname).

Wikipedia wrote:
Laurentia

Laurentia is the North American paleocontinent, which also includes present day Northwest Ireland, Scotland, Greenland, the North Slope of Alaska, and the Chukotsk peninsula of NE Russia.[6] During the Ordovician-Devonian time, Laurentia remained at the same paleolatitude, slightly south of the equator in the southern hemisphere, with relatively the same paleolongitude.[7] Major defining tectonic events include the Neoproterozoic rift sequence from the breakup of Grenville basement rocks, thermal subsidence related to the Early Cambrian to Middle Ordovician drift sequence during the opening of the Iapetus ocean, the Appalachian accretionary events to the eastern continental margin, and the resulting foreland-basin and clastic wedges.[8]

Avalonian Terranes

Avalonian terranes that constitute Avalonia are the modern day countries Northern France and Ardennes of Belgium, England, Wales, southeastern Ireland, eastern Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, southern New Brunswick and some coastal parts of New England. The basement consisted of Late Precambrian age arc rocks, and is believed to come from the margin of Gondwana, sometime in the Early Ordovician.[6] Avalonia rifted from Gondwana, during the onset of igneous activity in the Ardennes, Wales, and SE Ireland that consumed the Tornquist Sea oceanic crust. It drifted in a northerly direction and probably collided with Baltica in the Late Ordovician, and then with Laurentia in the Late Devonian. Evidence for this is consistent with paleomagnetic data which place Avalonia at a temperate latitude during the Ordovician and in a subtropical latitude during the Late Ordovician through the Devonian.[6]

So, probably Silurians.
