Yeah. So, Battlefield V is released next month, which is nice. I enjoy a Battlefield game.

Image

They have posted up this roadmap. Fundamental game modes are missing from the release, and will be added over time. No rush mode, no squad conquest to start with.

I know games get released before they are finished, but this is just taking the piss now. Selling it to us as a "Live journey through the second world war" . Just fuck off, release it when you are finished.

Unless you only pay for the bits you want, like Hitman.

They release them far too regularly now, almost trying to do a C.O.D.

TBH they've kind of lost me now, I didn't play BF1 very much at all, and am intending to skip this one entirely. (Or maybe pick it up a year down the line when it's finished and costs 75% less.)

Yeah.... so... I'm an idiot. Amazon gave me a money off voucher for Battlefield 5, so I caved and bought it.

First impressions are it's pretty good. I'm getting my arse handed to me on a regular basis as I haven't played for a while, but slowly getting into the swing of things. Weirdly, people seems to be helping each other out with ammo and revives and the like at the moment, not sure how long that will last.

My main criticism is that there is too much terrain. Sure it may be realistic, but running around is a pain with all the crap you need to navigate.

My Battlefield chum who is a MEGA FAN of the series and had pre-ordered BFV is very unimpressed with it, to the extent he said 'I'm trying to find a reason to carry on playing it'.

He felt it'd lost what really made BF distinct from COD, and is now just another dumb COD style shooter, in the main. (Not that COD can't be fun, but it's a very different confection to Battlefield. Or at least, it used to be.)

I'd agree with that, with the proviso that it is cod as it used to be, before all the future weapon, jumpy jumpy shit.

Edit: tell a lie, I played the one with the technodog shit, which one was that? It was shit.

The absolute slam-dunk that they're missing here is a remake of Battlefield 2142, which me and my BF loving chums agree is right up there with Bad Company 2 and BF3 as THE BEST BATTLEFIELD GAMES.

2142 was fucking epic, if you never had the pleasure of playing it yourself.

Titanfall 2 is a decent approximation to a BF 2142 remake.

I loved the first Titanfall and we managed to get a couple of Saturday nights out of it but it never achieved the critical mass required to make it onto the Saturday night games roster unfortunately. (No one apart from me really spent any time with the game outside of that setting, which is the test of whether or not a game will 'make it' with our group or not. A tremendous shame IMO as I thought it was a fantastic game.)

As such I'd be fighting an uphill battle with Titanfall 2. On top of that we're now split across XBox One and PC, so crossplay is an absolute blessing when it comes to Forza Horizon 4, and going forward I think we'll be looking towards crossplay titles for our multiplayer hijinks.

BF2143 though? We'd all get back on the bike for that.

My BF obsessed chum has completely ditched BF5 and gone back to BF4, which is actually two games back of course 'cause the last one was BF1.

He is now DONE with the series going forward and will not return unless DICE sort their shit out and make a proper BF game again. This is someone who's bought every BF game ever and been pre-ordering them since pre-ordering was a thing.

Game over man, game over.

Hudson sir, he's Hicks.

It's not a trendy opinion to have, according to the internet, but now I'm settled into it i'm really enjoying BF5, best version in ages.

Is that after the recent content update? My chum didn't last that long so hasn't played any of the new stuff.

Well, I say 'new stuff', whereas what I mean there is 'stuff that should have been in the game at launch'.

One of the things he specifically cited as really hurting the game is the lack of decent helis, jets, and modern tech in general.

The lack of aircraft and modern tech is what I like the most about it! A lot fewer random deaths from shit you can't see, when you die it's because you did something wrong.

Plus daily challenges, weekly challenges, monthly challenges etc... There is always some to work towards, so there is a nice sense of progression.

There might be one or two complaints about historical accuracy if they included some of those, hearthly

It's got bionic lady soldiers in it, I'd say that ship has sailed.

More seriously, I do appreciate that those things don't belong in WW1/WW2 era games, but we were talking about the BF series (we've been playing it forever) and the best BF games are.

BF2142 (Future)
BF Bad Company 2 (Present)
BF3 (Present)
BF4 (Present)

Honourable mention goes to BF2

The older ones are crapper because they have old things in it, like horses and shit guns and no helicopters.

Helicopters are just hovercraft with ideas above their station.

Why did they stop the Bad Company subseries? It was actually worth playing their single player modes.

The first one was brilliant SP but only so-so MP. The second one they sucked all the humour and charisma out of the cast for the SP, but the MP was really good.

BC2 also introduced destructible scenery which was a stunning, eye-popping, awesome revelation.

It made COD redundant overnight for us.

2142 only ranks above it for us because 2142 was a work of such stunning magnificence we still pine for it even today.

a) The setting was very different but to us it always felt like a true BF game, TBH we all just fell in love with it almost immediately.

b) Indeed, and to think we all got our knickers in a twist about it at the time, it seems so innocuous now. I remember when they turned it on and and as we were making our way around the maps we'd say stuff like 'You know what Steve, I really feel like buying an Intel CPU right now' on Teamspeak.

c) They had some real big lagging/warping problems early on but got it patched up quick enough. Titan Mode was our favourite mode, we could play that shit into the small hours of the morning. It was a true masterpiece of game design.

In current advertising news SF5 is putting adverts on fighters clothes.

I'm still playing this quite a bit and enjoying it, but it is buggy as fuck when it comes to doing assignments, they just don't register as completed most of the time.
When you have unlocks that are time limited and rely on assignments, that really isn't a good thing. No chance I'm getting the unlock this week as I'm still stuck on the first assignment.

So, firestorm.

Played one round, spent 10 minutes running around without seeing anyone, saw one guy, killed him, got shot in the back while I looted him. Game over.

Why do people like battle royale games?

I've not really played Fortnite in anger, but judging by its popularity, it's safe to say it's probably done something right too. Probably both being free-to-play has something to do with it, as it means a wide player base.

I enjoyed my time with PUBG, but as a concept battle royale has a really short shelf life, I think.

I can’t see why not. It’s the most interesting development in the FPS MP for years. Finally, there’s a reason to communicate with squads, work different strats and value your player character. FPS MP games have stuck to the same boring template for far too long. PUBGs skill ceiling was too high for most and the ‘one death and your out’ mechanic can be too harsh for casual players but with Apex’s fast and easy to pick up gunplay and the revival mechanic and Blackout’s CoD guns and the Down But Not Out game mode, BR is becoming more accessible and most of all fun. But with winning meaning something more than just a resigned meh at the end of a game.
