I've bought a car that has a 6 CD changer in it, which is an exciting throwback, so I need to choose 6 alltime classic CDs to put in it. Obviously I'm way too fucking idle to ever change these once they are in the car, and I no longer own any CDs so they have to be available to buy at non ridiculous prices.

So, in our very own desert Island discs, what are your 6 albums? I'll then steal the best ideas and if your choice makes the list, you have the prize of being forever smug.

My initial thoughts are that Fleetwood Mac - Rumours and Queen - A Kind Of Magic will be in there, but beyond that I'm easy. I did originally have Songs In The Key Of Life in there, but that will take up two of the precious slots alone...

My current 6... I think...

Fleetwood Mac - rumours
Rage against the machine - killing in the name of
Queen - a kind of magic
Rancid - and out come the wolves
Micheal Jackson - thriller
Ac/DC - back in black

The last time I had a car with CDs in it I just rotated through trance compilations. (I remember my Jap import Prelude Type-S had a 10-disc changer in it.) It's perfect driving music and because it sounds quite samey you won't necessarily mind when it goes back to the first disc.

So you can start with:

TRANCE NATION 1 (2CD)
TRANCE NATION 2 (2CD)
TRANCE NATION 3 (2CD)

Then there is

TRANCE NATION 4 (2CD)
TRANCE NATION 5 (2CD)

And lots and lots of other trance compilations.

The problem with 'normal' music is that if you're not in the mood for a certain artist or artists, you haven't got much to fall back on, whereas it is always time for trance. (I have about 750 hours of it on a 128GB USB key in the ST, I just let it cycle around endlessly.)

Do you even trance, bro?

You are on a pathway to disaster trying to put normal albums in a CD changer, I mean, Findus Fop has chosen some nice albums there, but 'In Rainbows', really? How often are you going to want to listen to that in the car, and it's very specific mood music I'd say, as well.

And then, I like me some Appetite For Destruction as much as anyone, but if you're driving an hour a day, that album's going to come round at least once a week, which I'd argue is too often.

My trance idea is the best idea. I can even send you all my trance CDs if you want, I have no need of them anymore.

I keep my list for the Desert Island continually updated but the demands of driving are different (you need a good singalong on the motorway) so I think my six would be:

Pulp - Different Class
Frank Turner - Songbook
Queen - Greatest Hits 2
British Sea Power - Open Season
Beatles - Number 1
Blur - Parklife

Of course, music tastes change so I'm not expecting anyone to have the same as me but... In no particular order...

G n R - Appetite for destruction
Foo Fighters - Colour and the Shape
Mötley Crüe - Dr Feelgood
Slipknot - Iowa (or volume 3.... Depends what mood I'm in)
Burning Skies - Murder by means of existence
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

But if you're not into heavy music, I don't know what to tell you... And of course, ask me again next week and it'll be a different 6 albums.

If it was me, I'd want as much music as possible, so it would be 6 compilation albums or greatest hits or something with 20 odd tracks on one CD so you'd end up with 6+ hours or so of music.

Most proper CDs only have about 10-12 songs on them, so you're looking at 3 hours or so of music.

Disc 1 of TN2 wasn't good, but the backend of Disc 2 was great. It's got Synaesthesia, Flowtation and Cartle Blanche on it, for god's sake!

The second half of Disc 2 of TN2 was one of my favourite albums to put on when totally blasted to fuck on pills and GHB. (Later GBL when they made GHB illegal, the cunts.)

One of the numerous great anecdotes he shared was how often he'd get fans coming up to him raving about his first novel, Legend. He said he would always smile and thank them but inside his head was a little voice saying "so, is none of my work since then as good as my first book, then...?"

Then I, uhh, asked him to sign my copy of Legend. In my defence I also bought his new book at the event and got that signed too.

There’s a quote that I can’t quite remember from the autobiography of Mike Doughty, called ‘The Book of Drugs’.

It basically goes along the lines that the things you like during particularly formative years of your adulthood will almost always shine brighter than subsequent things. Not because they’re necessarily better, but because of the associations and how your body reacts to things when you’re younger.

So am artist’s subsequent albums aren’t just competing with their first album; they’re also competing with the feeling of being 20 years old, motherfucker, and that’s one hell of thing to try to beat.

Just listen to six CDs of recordings of me playing the drums. I could never get a record deal or find a band or keep time, but I know I'm really good because I used to have long hair but now I have short spiky hair, and that's just like Metallica so I'm a natural.

I don't mean to brag but I do actually think I was a natural at playing drums.

This was after actually sitting down and playing the drums for a while however.

I want normal albums. They aren't going to be on repeat as I usually have the radio on, this is just for when i'm in the mood for a singalong :D
