Eager followers of what some are calling the CB radio of the 1990's, Twitter, will know that I am now the owner of a PAL SNES and a copy of Starwing.

Starwing is indeed excellent and the the wingmen remind me of certain BEEX'ers. But chums I need more games. SF2 and Mario Kart are obvious.
But what else should I buy?

Pilotwings is great as is Unirally. Super Metroid is also fantastic but I doubt you'll get that for a good price.

Ohh... Turtles in Time! That's brilliant.

Also, It's worth playing Mortal Kombat just to see how they removed the fatalities. Johnny Cage does a gentle kick to the heart which makes the opponent react like he's been electrocuted. It's very over the top and quite funny.

And some Zelda as well.

I've got a SNES in the loft I think — it's not even mine, a long lost friend loaned it to me about 20 years ago and never asked for it back!

Recently I've read up on how to mod a SNES pad into a USB pad and it doesn't look too complicated. This would be ace for emulators and I have a SNES pad where the rubber surround of the cable has come away.

I just need to learn how to solder tiny things first and I'll be away.

IIRC there are people selling new USB SNES style pads on Ebay.

There are, and they are on Amazon for a tenner but this pad is an official Nintendo pad that I want to mod.

The best version of The Chaos Engine is on the SNES.

Others I'd recommend:
Super Mario World
Final Fight Guy (though I'm not sure if the 'Guy' version was ever released in the PAL territories)
Batman Returns
Alien 3
Sim City
Super Tennis
Super R-Type
Metal Marines
Actraiser
Anything with the word 'Castlevania' in the title.
Zombies Ate My Neighbours
F-Zero
Jurassic Park
Super Ghouls N' Ghosts

I was always more of a Sega fanboy, but really, looking back, there's shitloads of really high-quality games on the SNES. I still need to get a decent RGB Scart cable for my Super Famicom, but it seems these things are a bit of a shit to get hold of.

I'll come up with a list shortly (but a very obvious one thats missing is Actraiser (1 and not 2) which is a cross between Populous and Final Fight)

Other things to consider are the various 'evercart' type things - i know they are expensive but that cart will get you the chance to play a number of games which would just be too expensive to get any other way (Super Mario RPG for example)

I had my first Snes just after launch and moved over to an American Imported one (so weird grey and purple console) but I had a succession of copiers for it (first a Wildcard then a UFO then a Super Pro Fighter and something else as well) which basically allowed you to dump a game onto a floppy and then play it from there , these do still exist but are very expensive and floppys are slow and unreliable so your better looking at the cartridge and SD cart type solution

Other things to be aware of for SNES stuff are the custom chips that were in some carts which make it difficult to play in other regions (the initial chips were in things like Starfox , Pilotwings , Mario Kart but there were other later chips for which you need a reasonably up to date converter to play (your twitter picture of the convertor does not have any branding on it which I would take as a sign that its a cheap one and probably wont handle late US or JP games).

I'd also suggest having a look around for Super Play magazine which is excellent (I know you have a thing for old game magazines anyway) - I have a complete dump of them in PDF's somewhere but you can probably find them yourself.

Oh and look out for some converted and 'improved' versions of Amiga titles

Any idea where I could get one of these? I've been after one for a while but have never managed to track one down.

Super Play did an Amiga Power style Top 100 listing towards the end of the magazine's life, and that is still worth looking at for some recommendations, despite a few odd omissions and having been written in mid 1996. (And being oddly, for SP, full of western games, but I guess most of the key staff had left by then.)

My own recommendations without doing hours of research, in alphabetical order...
Actraiser
Axelay
Chrono Trigger
Cybernator
Kirby's Fun Pak (aka Kirby's Super Star)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Pilotwings
Soul Blazer
Super CastleVania IV
Super Punch-Out!!
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Probotector (aka Contra Spirits, Contra 3)
Parodius, the trilogy of.
Pilotwings
Terranigma
UN Squadron
Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island and Terranigma and my easily favourite Super NES games, the latter being particularly rare, unfortunately.

Last time I checked, the rarest and most valuable PAL cartridges were Terranigma, Street Fighter Alpha 2, The Ninja Warriors and CastleVania: Vampire's Kiss, but I've no idea if that is up-to-date information. So if you spot them in the wild for a low price, snap them up, I guess.

I think you'll have problems getting SNES games for the right price to be honest. They seem to be quite expensive for anything that is half decent.

If you aren't fussed about boxes then it gets cheaper.

Yeah, my SNES collection is virtually all unboxed. I have boxed copies of Starfox and a Mickey Mouse title for the Super Famicom, but everything else is unboxed.

I've got an Everdrive MD which is a flashcart for the Megadrive, which I bought only about a month ago from http://www.retrotowers.co.uk. Quite expensive, but it's a terrific bit of kit and I can't recommend it enough. There's a SNES Everdrive, but it contains no custom chips, which rules out quite a few games from working. There is a cart on the site that you can get that seems to have everything barring the SuperFX chip, so most games are covered, but it is pretty expensive.

Edit: the best SNES cart seems to be about £150 if you want it in a cartridge shell, which is ludicrously expensive!

...I'm still a bit tempted mind. Shame I don't have that kind of cash.

Wikipedia list of Snes games

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_snes_games

Ones I remember as being quite good

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActRaiser - mixture of Populous and Final Fight
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axelay - great shoot em up with an amazing lava background for the 2nd? stage
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Ret ... eo_game%29 - Final fight clone with Batman as the main character
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Commando - Capcom arcade conversion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_III:_The_Alien_Wars - Excellent upgrade to the original contra (UK version is Probotector and has robots instead of soldiers)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s ... video_game) - Different to the Genesis version (came out much later)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_Kong_Country - These had some really next gen graphics at the time but I'm not much of a fan now
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equinox_(1993_video_game) - Isometric adventure game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Zero_(video_game) - The game to show off what Mode 7 is and how it works - amazingly impressive at the time but the first one doesnt really hold up that well now
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fight_3 - All the Final Fight games are reasonable but I really liked the 3rd one best (The first one is a 'split' game with Final Fight which only gives you Cody and Hagar and then they released Final Fight Guy which was the exact same but gave you Guy and Hagar
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Firemen - original idea for a game , with you as a fireman putting out blazes inside a large building
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_SWIV - Its Swiv - not really that great but if you want to see what those Amiga conversions look like then this or one of the Desert strikes would be my choice
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashback_(1992_video_game) - SNES version has really nice graphics but i'd already played both it and Another World on the Amiga
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghoul_Patrol - Follow up to Zombies Ate My Neighbours but not really that much better
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend ... ical_Ninja - A really good multiplayer arcade adventure type game with 2 ninja guys who can enter massive robots which look exactly the same as them (there are a number of follow ups which i think are Japanese only but you dont really need to be able to read the text)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend ... o_the_Past - The first Zelda game I ever played and one of the reasons I recently bought a 3DS (since the follow up was announced earlier this year)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethal_Enforcers - if you can find a copy with the guns its a very good arcade conversion (again i'm sure there is a follow up available as well - probably a slightly different name)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s ... ckey_Mouse - Not as good as the Genesis one but nicer graphics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_X_(video_game) - There are a number of Mega Man games on there - I thought X was okay but I found the original NES ones to be much more fun
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_II - I'd skip MKI which is slow and does not have blood but II was a great conversion on the SNES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Jam - Another great Midway arcade conversion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogre_Battl ... lack_Queen - Turn based strategy game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parodius:_ ... se_Fantasy - There are a number of Pariodis versions on the SNES - they are all pretty well put together
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_%28video_game%29 - Great original shoot em up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilotwings - Really well thought out 'flight sim' which I loved at the time (although its probably very dated now)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocky_%26_Rocky - or the follow up - great little arcade style games with a lot of humor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_of_ ... _the_Flame - really well put together follow up to the original POP , which looked great on the SNES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Mana - or the follow up (Secret of Evermore) - Zelda style adventure game but allowed 3 people to play at once (with a multitap)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparkster - follow up to the Genesis version - not bad but again I think I preferred the Genesis (Rocket Knight Adventures)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spindizzy_Worlds - I found the controls to be far too fiddly on this for me but I know you liked Spindizzy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fig ... r_Fighting - for SF2 stuff i'd go for Turbo which had a really solid conversion on the SNES and you can use the Capcom code to bump up the speed , there are good versions of the new challengers and SF Alpha but those tend to be more expensive and you can notice more the strain thats being put on the system
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Riders - Another solid arcade conversion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bomberman_3 - or any other Super Bomberman and a Multi-tap they are all great
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Castlevania_IV - Although pretty much a launch title i much preferred this to Dracula X
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase_H.Q. - *not* a conversion of the standard arcade game but its own thing which i remember being really hard but I've not played it in a long time
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Ghouls%27n_Ghosts - An arcade conversion that actually makes a really hard game even harder ! (although I love G'n'G)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_All-Stars - Or pick up the one with Mario world as well
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Kart - great arcade racer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mari ... even_Stars - one of the last big SNES games - evolved into the Mario & Luigi RPG's which you can get now for the DS but if you want to see where that all starts then get this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mari ... 27s_Island - Some people loved this , I thought it was okay but that was just because SMW was such a great game I dont think anything else could have lived up to it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Metroid - Another classic Nintendo franchise and a great game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Punch-Out!! - really good upgrade to the old arcade game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Star_Wars + ESB and ROTJ are all good but very hard arcade platformers - at the time the music and graphics were unlike anything else - they have not aged very well though :-(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mu ... es_in_Time - follow up to the turtles arcade game - the fighter released around the same time is not a bad SF2 ripoff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.N._Squadron - another arcade 'follow up' (to Area88?) which works really well and adds an overmap to the game allowing you to choose the order to tackle the battles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniracers - Weird quirky little 2 player racer thats great fun
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombies_Ate_My_Neighbors - 2 player smash tv like game with zombies and various power ups

Cannon Fodder is on there but not really that playable with the joypad (and I dont think it had mouse support)

The Snes also had some really good Japanese RPG's - I dont think your a fan of those but heres a list of those that I really liked

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breath_of_Fire_(video_game)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EarthBound
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Mystic_Quest

Oh and remember you can 'try' any of these things with an emulator before you go and pay money for real carts - oh and on your actual SNES you will probably want to look at PAL / NTSC versions as some games were not optimised very well so you'll find the PAL version will run 17% slower than the NTSC one

That's a point - Super Smash TV is great on the SNES thanks to the pad button layout.

Can't believe I forgot about Super Probotector (Contra III)... that was my favourite game on the SNES back in the day.

If it was Sega with nice hard cases then yes (Saturn aside). But Nintendo used cardboard boxes which are a bugger to keep nice.

Used to be really easy to find Mega Drive (and Master System) games in charity shops, when most of them would stock VHS. Last time I went on a budget MD game collecting splurge in 2010, it was still very possible to come away with 3 or 4 boxed MD games after a circuit round the local charity shop, which you couldn't say of anything Nintendo based.

Decent recommend-me-do there Zaphod, can't believe how many of those games I'd forgotten about to list.

I'll have to have a look later to see what Super NES games are on the Wii U's eShop, out of curiosity. Some may well be cheaper than getting the cartridges, in any state, but I'd be dead pissed off if any were PAL versions, as apparently the NES games on the eShop are(!).

outofprintarchive.com has some high-quality scans of early Super Play issues, incidentally.

It's a bit of a mix on the Wii U with the SNES games. F-zero is 60Hz while super metroid uses an optimised 50Hz. I'm guessing it depends on how much text there is. But Nintendo is well aware of it now and always announce what version they are releasing.

I'm currently playing super metroid and enjoying it. Although those wall jumps are a bugger. Got beat up bad by the under water boss so going back over everywhere.

The SNES was definitely the console that really got me in to games. I think most of what I played has already been mentioned. Sim City, Mario kart, Street Fighter 2 and Super Tennis were the biggest time sinks.

This thread is what BEEX is all about. Some fantastic info from genuinely knowledgable gamers. And I know it's all good stuff as most of my Megadrive carts come from the Megadrive RMD we did years ago.

Perhaps the mods could collate some of our best RMD threads so they can be used as references in some way?

Didn't we have a Definitive RMD thread somewhere? Or are they quite hard to collate with everyone's differing opinion?

Contra III was aces back in the day. I don't think the SNES ever got a version of Contra I/Gryzor. I wonder where the name Gryzor came from though cause, yknow, it's an rubbish name yet fabulously eighties sounding.

Perhaps temporarily down as it seems to be working for me right now.

I can vouch for the site as they delivered my Everdrive MD within a couple of days of me ordering it, and that was literally about a month ago.

This would be a great thread to tell everyone about http://snesbox.com/

You can play any SNES game, in a browser! It's very straight forward to figure out and everything I've tested on it so far, works fine. You can even play multiplayer online.

I now own Pilotwings, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and Mario Kart*. The first 2 were 4 quid each, Mario Kart was a tenner.

Almost won a boxed copy of Plok for a tenner but the 3G dongle I'm on conked out during the vital few last seconds and I got outbid.

* When they arrive.

I played Plok a couple of years ago (after a gap of 15 years) and didn't find it very good at all, to be honest. The chiptune music is still amazing though. Was one of the Super NES games I'd play with the console plugged into my dad's big hi-fi speakers.

That's a good price for Pilotwings loose, BTW. Been looking for a Japanese or US copy for a while now at a reasonable price but nothing yet.

Was in the buying mood and bought some more loose cart games courtesy of Devilman. Neither are anything special, but are certainly still playable.

i seem to remember playing ヨッシーのクッキー a while back and rather disliking it.

Struggling to think of any game with Yoshi as supposedly the main character that I do like.

At least hes better than Tingle.

I remember the NES version being quite good ? (and the only reason i can work out the game is the code on it SHVC-YC)

I only actually bought Yoshi's Cookie for my girlfriend, because she was talking about how she used to play it on the Game Boy as a child, and asked whether there was a modern remake of it, which there isn't. Now I've literally just remembered that I bought her the GameCube version of YC years ago, and she never even bothered to play it. Oh well!

Super Donkey Kong is well, Donkey Kong Country, which isn't amazing but probably worth having on the cheap.
