Not iplayer but the ITV one, another free film.

Whats Eating Gilbert Grape?

Drama about a small-town store delivery boy who has to function as the head of his household, as his younger brother is disabled and his mother is an obese recluse. Stars Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.

seems to be available for over a year which is a bit strange.

unlike the tedious writer interviews. Please don't tell me it got better, cos I gave up after 30 minutes of self-important bollocks about the 'craft' of writing and some wanker being a dick to people he'd employed to MAKE HIM WORK!

Dunno, Tuesday night's was the first one I've seen.

Also, Top Gear, obv.

Also also, on the channel 4 iplayer-ma-thing, the Tony Robinson Catastrophe series is pretty good (albeit, a little cheap and cheesy). I'm diggin the computer graphic mock-ups of Earth's past, especially the first episode about our collision with Theo *SMASH*

HOLD ON.

Didn't I do this thread that was resolutely ignored not long ago? True, the opening recommendation was an obscure niche interest short black and white film about a steam engine being caught in a snow drift in the 60's, but the message still was apparent - iplayer = awesome!

Tch. Some people. :hat:

Heartbreakingly, it is no longer available. Maybe YouTube might have it. I realise my skoolboy errur now, and will have more 'dynamic' titles with the word iplayer in them from now on. :bulb:

Here's the original missive:

Quote:
In't iplayer great? I especially like finding obscurities on the BBC Four thingy. Anyway, I don't watch normal telly aside from putting on DVD's, so I tend to get my TV show fixes through the computer. I am completely useless at tracking what's on though.

Anyway, I've just been watching a BBC Four old 60's documentary film about a train being stuck up on the tops near Barnard Castle far up in the Dales. It's a cracking instance of what made the old documentary's so good. Completely devoid of any criticism or penetration naturally, but a wonderful visual poem instead. Plus some ace shots, like when the locomotive snow plough hits the drift and flings tons of snow up in the air a good two dozen feet. It's the sort of thing you watch curled up under a blanket with some whiskey or tea, thankful that you're indoors and not out. It's also fascinating to see just how bad the snows were in the UK. And the Beeb and the trains and people getting pifflingly panicky when 2 to 4 cms falls, well how about four feet motherfuckers?

So yes, watch this, it's pretty good. And only ten minutes long.

I'll have a little look for it.
For future such gems, I would like to mention that I record onto VHS tape- ED everything that I watch on TV, which will probably mainly be recommendations from here, so you might be able to borrow these from me - ED by receipt of SAE - ED through the Royal Mail postal service - ED

I've just watched it again and there is. He says "Yes, merry christmas to you too Charlie" and then they introduce the next show "Crooked House". I assume one of us is watching a repeat and one the original or something.

The iPlayer version isn't taken from broadcast so any continuity voiceovers, credit squeezing etc. won't be present.

The Secret Life of Chaos – A look at the history of chaos theory and its occurrences in the natural world. Give it a watch if you can find the time, as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

iPlayer blurb:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Chaos theory has a bad name, conjuring up images of unpredictable weather, economic crashes and science gone wrong. But there is a fascinating and hidden side to Chaos, one that scientists are only now beginning to understand.

It turns out that chaos theory answers a question that mankind has asked for millennia - how did we get here?

In this documentary, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to uncover one of the great mysteries of science - how does a universe that starts off as dust end up with intelligent life? How does order emerge from disorder?

It's a mindbending, counterintuitive and for many people a deeply troubling idea. But Professor Al-Khalili reveals the science behind much of beauty and structure in the natural world and discovers that far from it being magic or an act of God, it is in fact an intrinsic part of the laws of physics. Amazingly, it turns out that the mathematics of chaos can explain how and why the universe creates exquisite order and pattern.

And the best thing is that one doesn't need to be a scientist to understand it. The natural world is full of awe-inspiring examples of the way nature transforms simplicity into complexity. From trees to clouds to humans - after watching this film you'll never be able to look at the world in the same way again.

Das Leben der Anderen / The Lives of Others is available on iPlayer now, and I'd highly recommend it.

Blurb: Award-winning political thriller set in 1980s East Germany. Captain Wiesler works for the Stasi, the secret police, and is asked to keep surveillance on a playwright, Georg Dreyman, whose loyalty to the party is under question. During the surveillance Weisler is slowly drawn into Georg's life and begins to question his own ideals.

As would I. One of the very best films I've ever seen.

Treeeeeeeemendously good.

Saw it at the cinema, somewhat un-enthusiastically, because the GF is fluent in german, so likes to go see foriegn language films, regardless of quality. But blown away by how good it was.

Did anybody watch Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man last night?

It's a three-part series covering his 43 Marathons in 51 days feat. This one starts in London and sees him run all the way into Wales and over the Brecon Beacons. Absolutely incredible, stupidly admirable stuff.

Also, I just found out what ‘Series Catchup’ means on the iPlayer site. Always assumed it was old things re-broadcast, but I was incredibly wrong.

You are most welcome :)

I'm currently watching Horizon: Is everything we know about the universe wrong? and true to most Horizon programmes, it's excellent, and true to most physics programmes, utterly baffling.

I think Horizon might be one of my top series ever.

I watched that earlier today. It was quite good (though I do find Horizon to be a bit hit and miss). To be fair I had read most of the 'new' ideas before. The one thing that bugged me was the female cosmologist/physicist/mathmetician (I can't remember what she was, so lackluster an impression did she make) - what exactly was the point of her being on the program?

"Nah, don't like the idea - don't understand it". "No idea what that's about". "Too confusing, can't be bothered". "I hate it, make it go away!"

Another Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man, this time running from the Brecon Beacons up to the Lake District. Interestingly running along the main road next to Miss Malabar's house, where he bumps into a couple of local lads who run alongside him, predictably complaining about the theft and gang culture in the area. Hoorah for The Wirral!

Looks like Mark Beaumont has been at it again. In 2008, he cycled around the world in record time. This time he's cycled down from Alaska to Argentina, including [climbing, on foot] all of the mountain ranges on the way.

Link!

I really enjoyed this last time, so I hope this one is as good. The loon.
