Is that fan the shape of the Half Life logo, or am I just seeing things?

Cripes, this shot is simply breathtaking.

Edit. Actually this looks like Nevada. So I'm thinking Fallout : Vegas (if it's even set there).

Mind you, I'm always thinking Fallout. It's going to be a long damn time before anything convinces me other wise.

If someone said to me "This is one of the new levels in Fallout 4" I would believe them. (referring to the pic I posted like). That pic would not be at all out of place in a Fallout game based in Nevada. /dreams.

Didn't Bethesda recently buy I.D? or Zenimax?

Urgh, and I thought Fallout looked really depressing. In fact, I found it so bleak and BLURGH, I couldn't bring myself to play it for longer than a few hours. It made me want to kill myself.

How would you prefer a post apocalypic game to look then? Unicorns cumming rainbows?

Carmack writes the best 3d engines and ID produce the best net code.

So it will look better than anything else and it's multiplayer won't be laggy but the actual game might suck.

Still ID's new owners will make lots and lots of money from selling the rights to use the engine for at least 3 years after its release.

BUT, the Unreal engine works flawlessly on all systems, and is still actually pretty damn good.

I'd dispute that - the Doom3 engine wasn't that good. It certainly wasn't that popular with devs, and for several good reasons.

Well, Doom3 showed its strengths and weaknesses quite well.

i.e. it was good a dark scenes, but couldn't really do very much. Even compared to Quake it could cope with remarkably few actors.

So terribly inflexible, and it's main selling point - the lighting - wasn't that useful for most games. Compared to the Unreal engine, Renderware... it was never going to get much interest from developers.

Due in part to it's flexibility, the Unreal engine being by far the most popular, and given familiarity (and constant work on) that engine, changing to a new one (i.e. the Rage engine) is going to cost a fair bit. I don't see the uptake being that high, frankly. ID threw their position as the prime engine write away at pretty much exactly the wrong time, and I don't see it recovering it unless they offer it for a fraction of the price.

But its not cutting edge. Carmack likes to push the envelope and make an engine that is technically superior to anyone elses.

I read his plan updates for a long time and even whilst developing an engine he forms ideas of what he wants to do in the next.

The doom 3 engine was supposed to be a lot more than it ended up as but the technology of the time was not capable of doing what he wanted it to.

Genius of epic proportions in my opinion.

Carmack will always produce the most technically advanced engines. They may not be the populist choice this does not alter their brilliance.

I think the Quake 3 engine made ID pots of money from licensing though.

Yeah, but let's not forget Unreal Engine 4 has been in development for ages already, and should be introduced for the next generation of consoles. I'm not particularly interested in absolute cutting edge anymore, because the consoles are unlikely to see the benefit any way.

Well the next generation of consoles should be able to cope with any 3d engine that is thrown at them.

Lets hope so because otherwise the PC games will look awesome in comparison and Mr Coffey will rub your noses in it. :D

Indeed. I'm perfectly happy with the graphics of the current generation. I just want fun games, and I don't care for development times and costs spiralling upwards just to make things more graphically complex.

I would happily keep the graphics of today and instead increase the quantity of stuff happening - more crowds, traffic, stuff like that.

Looking at Rage, it looks 'too good' if you know what I mean.

This is something I was thinking about recently. Say in 20 years time we have ultra photo realistic graphics fed directly into our optic nerve, what's it gonna be like to shoot someone in the face in GTA? Or storm the beaches of Normandy? I'm thinking post traumatic stress.
