Good Evenening Hive Mind,

I am currently doing some freelance type work (yay go me!) and am sharing my time between my home office (kitchen table), 2 client offices and an office on site. For a number of reasons each of these location has different machine that I use, however I often need various electronic files at each location. I'm currently carrying these around on a trusty USB memory stick.

This isn't ideal as I don't trust the little bastard with what is now all of my hard work and vast library of pilferred information.

I need something slightly more sophisticated (I think). I'm finding that I've got files files everywhere (ie saved on the various machines and on USB stick or just on USB stick or just on a particular machine) and would like to consolidate everything into one place that's safe, secure and I can have more control over versions of documents (or at least have less of an excuse for lazy management).

I was thinking something web based (and free!) so that I can access it from each of the locations that I'm at. Daily files aren't especially big but my reference material library is over 2 gb and I need access to that every now and again.

Anyone have any ideas, Or should I just be more careful with my memory stick and back that up daily to my home machine?

Oh yes, one of the locations doesn't allow FTP access and never will.

Thank you BeeX/BETEO'ers you may nerd away at your convenience . . . . but please keep it realtively simple what with me being a mong and all that

My wife uses her email to send files to herself. I can't beat it into her that this isn't a good file storage solution.

I'd never use it as a permanent storage solution, but for zapping a word doc from one place to another, it's fine.

When I was doing my degree, I had copies of my files in 2 places on my work computer, online, a usb stick, an external hard drive and 2 places at home. I was paranoid

Not least of course because it increases the size of the files by ~33%.

Have now been using Dropbox for a while, finally got to use it from my site office this week. I can confirm it is exactly what I was looking for.

Couldn't install it on the site machine so just went about my day using the web interface, fucking brilliant, saved me lots of messing about and all of my files nicely up to date with my day's work.

Thanks Hive Mind, you are Teh Awesomes.
