Hmmmmm. I posted in the Wongawatch thread about an Android conversion of the indie PC game Kairo that I'd picked up. Specifically I mentioned the controls being really poor; it's a first person perspective game but the 'walk' controls are just a set of static forward/backward arrows. So no 'strafe' at all and you need to find the arrows on screen with your fingers every time you want to move your character. It's an odd approach and a bit backwards in terms of mobile controls which have come a long way since that kind of thing was really acceptable. I assumed initially that they'd just knocked up some crappy controls and not revisited it so I emailed the developer to ask about it. His surprising response was to say that the controls were exactly as he wanted them and despite the bad reviews that the iOS version of the game had also got because of these controls this was what he felt was best. He said that he'd spent time during the process finding a set of controls that he personally liked and that the current set up mirrors how he plays the game on the PC (he never uses the WASD keys or strafe at all and uses the left/right mouse button to move forward and backwards). He says he's not willing to bend on this at all because how it plays on the mobile platforms is how he personally wants it to. Obviously he's had this conversation before so I don't know whether to bother replying to his email as I know I'm not going to change his mind; but I just find it such a bizarre attitude. He says himself in his email he wants people to enjoy the game but, at the same time, he's designed the controls entirely and only for his own preference and despite various sources saying they're unhappy with the interface he won't change it. My usual experience with developers of mobile apps is that they're more than happy to make changes based on customer feedback and I've never had such a weird response. Hell, forget about mobile apps, I've never come across any company before who's viewpoint is essentially to tell the customer they're wrong; especially when adding a different control option in and making it configurable would essentially keep everyone happy. I'm not really going anywhere with this post so there's probably not much to respond to but I was curious what everyone else though about it.

ETA: Heh, I just noticed on Twitter that he's posted about how Android people have asked for loads of changes compared to iOS users and how that makes them more 'picky'. He's being polite enough about it and all and mentioning it out of interest rather than to moan or anything like that but it grates a bit to be called picky for asking for an interface that isn't horrible.

Round and bought precooked, the oval one was too large.

Does the shape decide the flavour?

They are (were) from different shops, and I think the oval ones had a layer of marzipan between the pie base and the filling, which, when eaten hot, was awesome! I wouldn't want to eat a cold one.

Is So Talk About Games still going? If no we can we do a Future style gloating article in the news pages just like the old days. Phrases like "seeing off all our rivals" and mentioning how our ABC's are great and that we are supporting the market of computer X. It's what ('Linda Barker" -Ed): would have wanted*.

Damn. That's really quite sad. WoS have us Beex and it gave us the very first BBBC. Damn.

Sad, but not surprising, really. I don't know if anyone was still paying the £2 a month for "subscriber rewards", but from the looks of it there hadn't been any since September last year anyway - possibly before that even, I only had a quick glance.

Traffic died as soon as BEEX opened. Last time I popped in we had more posts in a day than WoS had got in a year.

It really had no chance the moment he realised he wasn't the reason people stayed, it was the other posters. The other posters went elsewhere. To Sofaland, then here.

I maintain that WoS was the best forum I have ever encountered. In its prime, that is.

We need a 'Save the WoS Archives' campaign.

Suggest mods delete the above post and then deny they did it.

The £2 mass exodus from WoS was the first time I ever got to be all seccesh about anything. It was rather exciting.

And though I hadn't been to see what was going down on the WoS forum in over a year, I'm a little sad to see it go. Stu had set up a wonderful place there and he, along with J Nash and the rest of the AP crew, remain an incredibly formative experience in my life. So yeah, a little sad.

I think that we all owe a lot to Stu and his forum but for me, it had been dead a long time. I did subscribe for a while too but the place was just too quiet.

Still, it's sad to see it finally bite the dust but I'm thankful for it helping me find this place.

We are off to Saint Lucia to sit in the rain for 10 days, according to the weather forecast.

I have never been as nervous as I was, nor as panic stricken when the car died. Fortunately, my best man is somewhat used to my highly strung nature and sorted it. The wait for MrsA was excruciating, but when she finally deigned to turn up, I thought she looked lovely and then knew it was going to be OK. And, about half way through the whatnot, I thought to myself "This is, actually, a pretty fucking ridiculous way to spend half an hour" and pretended I was a spy on a secret mission and I had to plan a way out through the crowd and over the wall to the River Wye meaning I missed my cue to say "I will" or "I do" or something for a bit. I wanted to say ":this:" but forgot.


I don't think I spoke to lots of people there, but I did try my best. And lots of people bought me drinks so it was rude to not accept them.

I'd also like to say:

Don't worry about the weather forecast in the Carribean. *Somebody* moaned for weeks before we went to the Dominican Republic about the forecast, and it was blazing hot and sunny almost every day. Have an amazing time!

What I find quite spooky about that video is the crate he carries it in is same crate mine is stored in, and I have the exact same telly too - a Sony Trinitron.
