Signal to noise stuff for him is very poor (lots of junk for a few things which are very good) but I do enjoy his writing and the stuff he did both on Eurogamer before the 'scandal' and the bits on RPS are all worth reading (and of course Consolevania and VideoGaiden were amazing and we're still waiting for his next web show)

I was looking at this in a game shop yesterday and it was priced at 49.99, the Amazon price is 38.99...go on, buy it, you know you want it.

I think I'll finally treat myself to a boardgame or two. I've been reading this thread and filling my amazon wishlist, so please help me narrow it down. I want a game we play two player, but would also like one (a different one is fine) that can be played by 2+ players.
So far, my top picks in my wishlist are Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Zombies, Small World, Cosmic Encounter and Dominion.
Please make this decision for me, ta.

PS I haven't played any of them before and if you recommend one that is available in multiple editions, recommend the best edition if you know it

The Scandinavian version of 'Ticket to Ride' is ideal for two or three players.

BTW I *know* that its not the same but there are PC / MAC versions of ticket to ride and a very good ipad version - theres also a good ipad version of Small world which is limited to only 2 players but is still great fun.

The advantage of the electronic ones is that they are much cheaper (ticket to ride is part of the steam sale right now for £3.49 http://store.steampowered.com/app/108200/ and its been cheaper before) and they would allow you to practice and not worry too much about getting the rules and scoring right (since the computer handles it for you).

And if you want to get ideas for other games watch Tabletop on youtube

Carcazone (sp) is good too (as is the 360 version).

Hmm, so Ticket To Ride and Carcassone? I would prefer to have an actual boardgame, so we could sit at the coffee table and drink wine and eat cheese and olives and stuff. An iPad or computer version doesn't fit into that image in my head!

What about this zombies game then?

Yeah, it's pretty good. Not so hot with only two players, though - it's more of a 4+ game.

I know - and playing them on the computer is really not the same but if you have a number your considering then having a quick blast at one on the PC will let you know if you want the game or not and when stuff like ticket to ride is 1.49 on the IOS , you can try - see you like it then splash out the £35 to buy the boardgame

I might see if I have time to have a shot of that on iOS then, thanks Zaphod. We have a day off together next Thursday so it would be cool to have it by then but I'm working every day until then so if I've not tried it by Tuesday I'll just bite the bullet and order the game. Wonder if I could download it on 3G and have a go on my break..?

Kern, MrsA and myself played Revolution on Saturday and it was very good. I'd recommend it. You bid for power using force, blackmail or bribery. Super easy to pick up and good fun playing against the others in your quest to have the most influence and support.

Amazon (.com) right now have an offer where if you buy an indie game you get 3 free indie games which are
Ticket to ride , Party of Sin , and Drip Drip

You can buy *anything* off their list and get steam codes for those three titles

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/r ... 1001225021

And one of the 'any' items is a bit of DLC for Ticket to Ride : http://www.amazon.com/Ticket-Ride-USA-1 ... MHV6Q7E2X0

So buy that for $2 and get the 'main' game to go with your DLC plus 2 others for free.

To buy games digitally from Amazon.com you need to add a US address to your account but it does not have to have anything sent there or be associated with your account in any way (lots of posts on Hotukdeals just googling random US addresses to use without any issues but I used one of the US offices for the company that I work)

Note there is also a 15% off coupon for Amazon but i would not use it in case it then didnt count the DLC as 'enough' to qualify for the other 3 titles (however if your buying something more expensive use code "gooncave")

** edit ** and I forgot to add that Ticket to Ride on Steam works on both Windows and Mac (so just enter the steam code and you can play it on your PC or your Mac)

I managed to have a go of this on my iPhone and ordered the game. It arrived on tuesday, just in time for my sister coming round for dinner. We played it on Tuesday night, then had another game on Wednesday whilst sitting out in the garden. Lovely.
Want to order another game now. So help me please. I'm thinking one of the following-

Dominion
Pandemic
Small World

Does anyone have anything to say about any of these games, or any other to recommend?

I own dominion, but have never played it.
I own Pandemic, and am not overly keen on it.
I have not heard of small world.

I quite like Small World - if your looking to see how some of it plays

For this one buying the digital version doesnt really help much (I think its about £6) - however if you like the game its a fun play and pass version (2 players only and the computer can play a reasonable game)

My problem is I become paralysed with indecision and leave things sitting in my wishlist or even basket for months. The only reason I finally ordered Ticket to ride was because I was drunk!

Maybe I'll just get drunk then ;)

I am really tempted to just go for Small Worlds...

Go for small worlds.

What else do you like cause there will be boardgames about it

e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asmodee-FDUSASM ... 2914849648 was good fun to play , but it would probably help more if you liked car racing.

I deliberatly try to never think about the cottage, or BBQ or any other meet because I work every fri, sat, sun and have no holidays left 'til the end of the year. It's awful :'(

I ended up buying Small World. :)

I have a 100% winning ratio on every game of Ticket to Ride I have ever played.

Admittedly, I have only played once.

Played our first game of Small World tonight. Getting it all set up with popping the cutouts out of the cardboard backing and reading the rules took a wee while and bothered my obsessive nature a little bit when I got a wee tear on one of the race tiles backing paper but finally, we were ready to start. Once you start playing, the game is actually very simple and the size of the map means it's impossible to avoid conflict, which means it's hard to hold a grudge for someone attacking you. Really good fun, especially with the game mechanic of abandoning a race and moving onto a new one. Really looking forward to our next game and it seems like it is one which will get better over time as you refine tactics, learn races and powers and experience new combinations. Highly recommended.

There's a new game shop in Oxford. And they run it like a cafe so you can order drinks and snacks and play the games! Going to have to check it out tomorrow and see what they've got in stock.

I really shouldn't go on Ebay when drunk. I seem to have won an auction for some old role playing rule books and have the top bid on a copy of Descent 1st Edition. Oops.

Anyways, anyone else playing this?

http://live.cardhunter.com/

Card/Boardgame like thingy that you play in your browser. It's currently in Beta but once I signed up I got a beta key within 24 hours. It's not bad.

Eager forum viewers will note that I bought Conquest of Planet Earth a couple of days ago. I played three games against the Grimlet today.

It's fucking fantastic. There are a lot of cards and counters to sort out and the "who goes first" thing takes some getting used to, but once you're up and running it's brilliant fun.

Attachment:
2013-08-29 17.46.50.jpg

The basic idea is that you move your flying saucers around the gameboard and try to capture locations, which are worth different amounts of "terror points" (get 8 and you win) and have different levels of resistance. I had an "issue" with a small town that led from my landing gameboard (the one my saucers start on) to the main gameboard. It was only a small town, and only had a resistance rating of 1, but I just couldn't get past it. I named it "Bumtown" (although in my head it was called "Cunttown"). Every time I moved a saucer onto the square, I managed to get it shot down. This went on for three consecutive goes, until I decided that I'd had enough, gave myself six action points for my turn (you choose the number of action points you have for your go at the start of each turn) and moved all four of my saucers onto the square at once, finally giving myself enough attack strength to beat stupid Bumtown.

Much cheering and gloating over the success occurred, and then on his turn the Grimlet dropped an atomic bomb card, destroying all of my saucers and vaporising Bumtown forever, robbing me of my hard-earned (and pitiful) single terror point.

Conquest of Planet Earth is fantastic.

Card/Boardgame like thingy that you play in your browser. It's currently in Beta but once I signed up I got a beta key within 24 hours. It's not bad.

This is amazing. How come there isn't a thread about this?

I registered interest in the beta last night and had a key by the morning.
Spent an hour on it this morning before work, it really is very good indeed! It may run out of steam in the higher levels, but the "tutorial" and early levels are just lovely

Couldn't sleep, was awake at 5:30am so I thought I might as well give it a go.

Can a mod split this into a thread of its own. I think the game deserves it, it has multiplayer action too!

It's had, like, two worthy posts. Are you sure we can't just start a new one?

You'll just abandon it next week anyway, like that PC one, or Tekken Card Tournament...

I played TCT quite a lot, right up until they nerfed Panda and it became pay 2 win.

Ummm.... I may have spent pretty much all day yesterday on Card Hunter :D
My little band of dwarves is now level 12.

It's extremely addictive, balanced well, funny and just outright charming in all respects.
