I've taught my dogs to hi5.

I'm pretty certain Cavey has already pointed out the fundamental flaw in your reasoning here :D

Seriously, 40 minutes ago, Craster referred to Cat pissing on his ex wifes bed, and no-one has brought up a FF reference?

You're all dead to me.

Yeah. I should. Rule V. Actually, just riding a bike might help.

Went to subway for lunch it was closed, it had ran out of bread.

To run a sandwich shop you need bread and filling.. it is not rocket science.

Mrs T still claims it was the best, and she makes and judges food stuff for a living.

Label could have done with some work though ;)

Obligatory "I'm leaving, let's go for some drinks, I'll miss you all" email sent. Took two seconds to be acused of thinly veiled sarcasm.

This office is like a fucking furnace and I'm starting to get more than just a little pissed off with it. I literally cannot wait to get out of here and start my new job, just one day and one more week to go. And even that feels like far too long to wait.

I wish I was a bit more normal

I had some people from work round the other day for a spot of dinner (that's tea for oop North folk - I'm just attempting to be posh) and my tendency to not shut up about stuff caught me out again. I had some key decision makers from the office there including one that has the sway over my salary and I couldn't help but point out that the psychic she had seen had no mystical powers at all and went on about rainbow statements and the forer effect.

I then pointed out that Barry Scott didn't in fact invent Cillit Bang (Someone with a degree in advanced genetics threw that in as a definite fact) and pointed out that the "we only use 10% of our brains" statement was also bollocks.

I get really interested in statements that people just regurgitate without thought as to why it happens. I even come out with the occasional "No that's post hoc ergo propter hoc" and then have to explain that in the office.

So I come across as a curmudgeonly smartarse rather than an erudite sophisticate which I try and aim for.

Or I just work with mentals. How do you all find your offices?

Eh? Propter what?

Man, that's just awesome mate; I'd readily steal that one from you, if only I could trust myself to even remember those words in their correct order... :'(

... As for your principal point, personally I've learned over years to (more or less) tell anyone who has, or is ever likely to have any authority and/or other influence over me whatsoever precisely what I consider they want to hear, always, unless there's really no alternative. Which is very much a learned behaviour in my case, as I'm sure you can well appreciate :p

And they ran out of one of those things so they closed the shop. If they were pretending to still be a functioning sandwich shop whilst missing either filling or bread; well, that'd be a problem.

Subway also sell salad boxes. Such product has a bread input requirement of nil.

In trying to determine whether the lady stood up on the train was fat or pregnant (hence deserving of my seat, were it not for two other vacant seats) I checked her left hand for a ring an determined that in its absence, she was just fat. How frightfully traditional of me.

Why?

No harm done telling people what they want to hear, make them feel better about themselves, or whatever. Costs nowt, too. If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you - and might do you a favour over the next guy. I'm a bit 'pointy' by nature at times, but business is business and time/experience have smoothed the old edges a bit. I'm good, but don't kid myself I'm the best engineer in the land at what I do, but if people like you, chances are you'll be the one getting the contracts. Pissing people off by telling 'em home truths or whatever is usually (very often) bad business.

Customer != boss for everyone though Cavey. And always telling them what they want to hear is "more or less" fibbing, which is going to catch up with you sooner or later if you work in a traditional organisation.

Fair enough, I'm not talking about actively lying to people, or even creeping like some slimeball - I guess what I mean is *couching* things carefully, refraining from pointing out someone's wrong about stuff unless it's really in their best interests for me to do so, telling them stuff that is likely to make them feel better about themselves and so on. To me, it seems harmless enough - in fact actually quite a nice thing to do - and from a selfish POV, actively helpful.

I've seen quite a few brilliant people - people with vastly better talents than the likes of me - not realise anything like their potential, or even outright fail, simply because however good they were, no-one actually liked them & they themselves couldn't be arsed changing.

Oh sure, always be nice and polite.

But I read it as never pointing out things that could be done better to your boss, etc, or even publically backing the boss no matter how stupid his suggestions. And I have certainly at times paid the price for putting forth criticism (to the extent that I've had to change jobs in order to advance in any way), and have learned to do what others do: Just don't say anything.

Ironically, I myself vastly prefer people to be *brutally* honest with me, and I've said as much to my staff. But that's just me, and I don't think it's the norm.

A stupid net nanny has been installed at work. So far the only hits I've had aee here, wotr and collegehumor (which was just an ad somewhere, doh).

They keep having to turn it off again because triggering a block kills the connection for everyone until it's rest.

Honestly, cowboys*. That and 'hey, this antivirus you insist we use is total shit, let us pay you more to install the same vendor's web censor!'

Fucking idiots. Its even a separate.company that we sublet off, but our boss just bends over at each and every new ridiculous demand.

* what I forgot to put in here was coming across their head guy on the phone to someone moaning that he turned it on, it didn't work, and he couldn't figure out why because it didn't have usable documentatin so he turned it off again.

ON A LIVE CUSTOMER SITE KNOWING INCOMING EMAIL WAS BEING DROPPED. Totes professionalballs.
