Those cheese potatoes are terrific, but they're so terrifyingly high in butter and high-fat cheese that even I try to save them for special occasions. The green beans I've made a few times since, however. Like my recent meal South by Midwest.

I gave thanks for being home, Kate with me, in my friend Catherine's house, having a nice evening together. That's generally the sort of things you give thanks for now, as you're generally not settlers huddling in the husk of your ship trying not to freeze or starve.

Used ASL "in anger" for the first time today. Our textbook comes with two DVDs in a little sleeve which they do NOT stay in! So when I checked my book today I found one was missing and figured I must have left it in one of the computers in the lab on the third floor.

One of our teachers was down there with another group so I enlisted her help to ask the class to check the DVD drives. The right disc was found but the teacher said she didn't think it was mine because I hadn't been sitting in that part of the room.

Finally managed to get hold of Mrs Meaty who checked my other backpack and low and behold it had fallen out in there.

So went back to the teacher in the lab and said

MY DVD I PHONE HOME MY GIRLFRIEND LOOKING-FOR SEE MY BAG OPEN LOOK FIND!!

This got a celebratory (and relieved) response. It might not sound like much but I am proud of myself being able to explain what happened as well as the resolution. One of my friends says we're essentially communicating in grunts still, but it is slowly coming together.

I was best man at my best friends wedding yesterday. I did the speech entirely from memory and people loved it! It was indeed, a fantastic day.

Well done! I have done a similar thing and it also went well, so count that as a top tip. Hope you're feeling suitably, but almost enjoyably, battered today.

I think this is a yay.

So I wanted to check the roof of the conservatory yesterday, due to concern about a leak, and got the ladder out (a three part extendable one). I put the ladder up against the wall of the house, alongside the edge of the conservatory. I wedged the bottom of the ladder as per usual. I climbed up the ladder, and got to the top (about 15 feet up, I guess), and all of a sudden the ladder slipped. The bottom of the ladder slid along the floor, so I dropped rather quickly. Thankfully the bottom of the ladder then wedged against a wall, so the ladder wedged between that wall and the side of the house at a 40 degree angle or so, and so I stopped falling when I banged back into the ladder 6 feet or so below where my feet started out, but I got banged up pretty good, climbed off the ladder and frankly hyperventilated. I’ve never been so scared in my life. A friend’s dad paralysed himself falling off a ladder not too long ago, and someone else’s dad broke their arm in 3 places in a very similar situation to me. I’m lucky as hell. I’m also never going up a ladder without someone holding the bottom ever again.

Lucky escape there mate.

A brief recap:

-Accepted into college on 15 June
-Permanent Resident sponsorship thingy received by Canadian Immigration Commission on 15 July
-Meaty approved as sponsor on 21 August, same day I flew back home
-Mrs Meaty arrives on visitor visa on 04 October.

So...

Two days ago I went onto the CIC website to update the address on our file to the one here in Toronto. I then decided to have one last stab at the 'check your status' thing, which up until this point hadn't been co-operating. It said 'A decision has been made regarding your application, the office will contact you about this.'

Ominous wording, I suppose to avoid giving false hope or disappointment. Plenty of anxiety though.
