I'm not so sure, entire genres evolve over time and I wonder if FPS is one such genre.

It depends how you view Counter Strike I suppose, is it 'pure' or 'basic'?

I was very, VERY into Counter Strike back in the day, but on the other hand we weren't exactly spoiled for choice, and it seemed like a massive leap forward from the likes of Quake 2.

Dunno if it's still as relevant today though, destructible scenery alone is a massive improvement to the genre IMO. I can imagine getting a bit irritated by people hiding in a flimsy shack and being completely unaffected by a frag grenade blowing up just outside it, for example.

It's almost a sport at this point. It's a totally separate entity if you ask me. Like arena shooters, it lives and dies by its own rules. It doesn't need destructible scenery any more than football needs rollerblades. It just needs tweaking and perfecting and updating over time.

Whether you're into that "sport" or not, is up to you, but I don't think it's fair to criticise something like that because it hasn't got vehicles and destructible scenery etc.

So I'm in the beta now. A kind soul from NeoGAF gifted me a beta key. Only played for about half an hour so far, but it seems alright. Weapons feel a bit strange, but they're updating it every week. Definitely need to build a new PC, though.

Has much changed about it or is still largely the same game with a prettier face?

I've just had a watch of a video and I swear I've played this - a good few months ago too, I think. Is that possible?

Not unless you've been to Valve HQ. Do you want a beta invite by the way? When I get given some I mean - apparently beta participants are given them periodically for chums. First one is dibbed by Ramsea, however.

If anyone else wants one, form an orderly queue. It's not as good as petrol.

I'll take one, when you have one spare. Don't rush though - I rarely play games any more, as I'm too busy improving this forum for your benefit, so there's certainly no hurry, because maybe I'll be fiddling with the server to make it go faster and make everyone's life a tiny bit easier, so, like I say, no reason for me to get one first, or anything, I'll probably be too busy volunteering at the homeless bunny shelter to use it.

[edit]Oh wait, I'm not in the queue anyway. Beta me up! IN YOUR FACE, ORDINARIES!

It's £12 on Steam, which probably translates into 1600 points on XBLAH. Also, I just read back through this thread and discovered why I stopped reading it in 2011.

Heh!

I've been playing the beta - on PC would you believe? It's Counter-Strike, basically. It has some issues that are big to a long time player like me but wouldn't bother normal folk. But they're to be fixed. If you're into Counter-Strike, it's a no-brainer really. Especially for £12.

Not sure if I'll get it on XBLA as well as PC though unless plenty of folk grab it from here.

I won't play it on the PC - I've had CS 1.6 and Source sat in my Steam account since 2004 and think I've installed Source once. I could be interested in bezzie funtimes on XBLA, but if no one's going to bother I won't be overly upset.

I might be tempted on 360 if y'all are going to play, but I'll be getting it on the PC for sure.

CS on the 360 would be... Weird.

If it's based on the really rather elderly Source engine, surely it's going to look shit for starters?

Times have moved on.

What 'issues' did you notice?

Isn't it cross platform? Ie pc vs xbox, or have I just made that up? I can't remember, maybe I'm confusing it with something else. Anyway, I've played the beta and I wasn't overly impressed. If you don't like source then don't waste your money. I still play css and I have done for years. And I will be buying GO, but not because it will be a great game but because most of my friends will be getting it. I would say 90%, if not more, of the reason I still play css is because of the community. It's one of the few games where you can play regularly with the same bunch of people any night of the week.

Quote:
What's more, there are new modes - Arms Race and Demolition - that make for a more agreeable introduction. They're derived from Gun Game, which you may remember from Call of Duty: Black Ops' Wager Match options but which began life as a Counter-Strike modification, and the basic idea is that every time you kill someone you get a new weapon. In Arms Race, it's technically team deathmatch but really it's a free-for-all where only half the guys in the game are shooting at you, and you have to work your way through rifles, shotguns, pistols and sniping all the way up to a golden knife. The winner is the first player to register a kill with everything. Respawning is fast and furious and there are a few small-scale, specific maps for this mode, which owe a lot to the Quakes and CODs of the world, with criss-crossing walkways and rat runs that leave you constantly exposed.

The other mode, Demolition, is my favourite. It's a mash-up of the core Counter-Strike bomb-defusal objective variant with Gun Game-inspired rules, tweaked so that you get a new weapon after each round in which you register a kill (rather than immediately every time you drop someone) and so that weapons get progressively weaker - starting with, say, an M4A4 assault rifle and moving toward weaker pistols and manual-reload shotguns.

I like the old-school sound of that.

Without wanting to go there, I'm not sure I can play CS with a pad.

The demo is unrestricted, but timed for 45 minutes, which is pretty good of them. Good old Valve.

I tried it earlier and it seems great - it'll take some getting used to playing CS with a pad, but it's perfectly doable - especially because everyone else is playing on one. I might grab it when I have some cash. Definitely getting the PC version regardless, but the 360 version ain't bad at all.

It was fine on a pad with the old Xbox version. Everyone had one, so it's not like it was an uneven playing field. And it's just an FPS anyway.

It's a lot more difficult than CoD, though. No ADS means it requires pretty twitchy aiming skills. It's undeniably at the far end of what is "doable" with a pad. The only things more extreme would be stuff like Quake 3. But as I say, it'd be fine with a few hours of practice.

That's nothing to do with it. I've been playing CS with a KB+M for... Christ... Thirteen years. Making the change will feel all manner of wrong.

I expect it would, just as weird for me to start playing FPSes with KB+M again after eight years of using a pad. The last time I played CS was on the original Xbox, so I reckon I'd be ok.

£12 on Steam, can't hurt to give it a bash I suppose.

It'll feel weird playing Counter Strike again though.

Did they do it cross-platform in the end?

9/10 at Eurogamer.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... ive-review

The comments are mostly sensible and mature - (very odd for Eurogamer, probably reflective of the CS playerbase though) - and reasonably argued.

Do note there is some negative stuff in there about the console versions in terms of lag, controller response, controller usability, and framerate. However, with no cross-platform play at least no other players will have a 'platform advantage'.

WOOAH!

This game has still got it!

Just had a quick 60 minute blast, seems to be all the same old maps (which is cool, as CS already had a collection of the best game maps in the world), bit of a lick of a paint, few concessions to modernity (buying has been simplified for example, a straightforward 'find me a game on this map/mode thingy' has been added, although still a proper server browser too) - but it's still basically the good old CS I used to love until I did big man wee.

Plus the gamer clientèle seem to be a cut above the CoD/BF crowd - this is not a game for screaming emo teenagers, because they'll just get killed in the first 30 seconds and then have to sulk for the rest of the round.

I'm very, very rusty - but it's coming back to me.

The XBLA version has a generous 45 min fully-featured trial if anyone is sat on the fence at the moment.

APoD and I are going to give this a bash tonight if anyone cares to join us. 8ish.

Put another 90 minutes or so in this evening.

There's no denying it's basically a prettied up and tweaked version of CS:Source and then back to CS1.6 before that, but there are enough changes to the gameplay to make it an evolution of the original game rather than just a cynical re-release, plus at £12 you can't accuse Valve of gouging for it.

I'm getting better, still not great, but regularly finding myself up in the top two-four places on my team, but also still getting far too gung-ho, far too often, and getting my head blown off as a result and having to sit out the rest of the round >:(

Definite re-learning process after years of playing BF/CoD FPS games.

Already found a few really good UK based servers which I've added to my favourites list, and generally speaking getting a good game with folks who play as a team, use tactics and work together towards a common goal. Not using voice chat myself (there's a fairly comprehensive orders/report/info hotkey system, plus just free typing a message, even if it's simply 'B' to indicate the preferred bomb site for example), but quite a few folks are which can help too.

Most certainly gets a thumbs-up from me.

It's ok, APoD has to put his child down to sleep, some can't commit to an exact time. We wouldn't understand.

I've never played the original so I'm interested to know what the fuss is about. The videos I've seen don't make it seem much more than a stripped back COD-alike with rounds. But COD has that too. Proofs in the playing I guess.
