When I watched it, my then girlfriend fell asleep before the end. Not overly useful.

They all had some kind of weird drowning fetish...? Did you find these girls on the internet?

Also: Ignoring the 3D one, were these separate releases, or did you take one a week to the cinema when it was first out!? You absolute player :D

Yes - demonstrating the many varied ways you could happily fit two people on that floating plank of wood. Doesn't take bouyancy into account, of course.

The space on the door was never in question.

And yes, there were three different lovely ladies in three weeks (possibly two weeks, although one would have been my girlfriend so that doesn't really count).

It's brilliant. As Curio's chum Kat once found out when she said something mean about it and I made roaring noises.

I think it's been a combination of things; in the last four years, all of the main characters have either featured in their own films or had a role in them, there has been a fair bit of crossover between the movies, too, which has generated interest and hype in an Avengers movie being produced.

This.

All those other ones (since Iron Man) were building to this, and everyone knew that. So people like me didn't bother going to see the poxy ones and went to the proper one. It was like the way people may not watch most WWE shows, but if you have even a passing interest in the faux-fisticuffs, you'll watch WrestleMania.

That, and the hype machine gets better and better. It seems that every time we get a big superhero film, it breaks some record or other. Unless it's a complete flop.

That's a bit unfair to the last big record-breaking superhero film; The Dark Knight was successful because it was a fucking amazing film by any possible metric. We might just need to admit that people have gone and made some actually good super-hero films and that people appreciate that.

A tad precious there, lad. I love The Dark Knight (no idea how well Dark Knight Rises did, Future Boy!). And that wasn't just some record or other. It was second biggest film ever.

But that's all irrelevant. These films do break records. Spidey 2 did. Good film. Not amazing. Certainly not NolanBatman level, but they break records.

Dunno. Was I being unfair to Batman? Didn't even mention that series in my post.

I honestly wasn't being precious, my post really was meant as a level-toned comment so apologies if it came across as anything other than that. Anyway, I really was just pointing out that the Nolan films were probably well received because they were genuinely good films, while your post strongly implied (to me at least) that the hype machine had a lot to do with the success. And I know you didn't specifically mention the recent Batman films but I'd just assumed you were referring to those as they're by far the most recent successful superhero films. Apologies on all counts if I've misinterpreted though.

Batman Begins is great for the first two thirds, then the final third is just a bit shit.
Dark Knight is great first time round, but doesn't really hold up to multiple viewings and is over long.

IMO obviously.

I found it a little better the second time through, actually. The bit with the car turning into the bike just made me rage with WTFness, and I was already bored of Ledger-mania before he even got on the screen.

Partly misinterpreted. I love those Batman films.

However, you're right in that I'm saying the hype machine played a large part in their commercial success. Of course it did! As I say, TDK was at the time the second biggest film ever. Was The Prestige or Inception? Nowhere near. It wasn't just such a glorious film that everyone decided to watch it.

Culture industry played a massive part. Nothing wrong with that. It is just business, after all.

Dark Knight? Dark TRIPE MORE LIKE! HA! EAT THAT! Or something.

I found Dark Knight only just passable as a film. Overlong and just simply not that interesting. Actually to be fair it worked in individual scenes but I felt as a whole it didn't.

The Avengers was just simply a wonderfully fun rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Didn't take itself too seriously. And didn't have christian bale's batman voice.

However I think if you like TDK it will probably stand up better on DVD than The Avengers due to the latter largely relying on surprise events. TDK is probably a bit more story based. Even if it is boring.

It's getting to the stage where a bad comment from you is a better recommendation than any five star review.

Although I do agree about the Batman voice.

We're going to watch this on Wednesday. What do we need to watch first? Today we have done;
Thor
Ironman
Captain America

Tomorrow we have Ironman 2 lined up.

That'll do it, I'd say. The earlier Hulk films aren't really relevant.

It isn’t necessary to have seen any of them before watching The Avengers. It stands on its own pretty bloody well.

Although The Incredible Hulk has a different actor playing Banner, it's still considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so definitely worth watching. Malabelm has it right, though. You don't have to see any of them.

Funny how so many people seem to say that about me. I'm right though, it's just the rest of the world is out of step.

The thing I hate about The Dark Knight is that it never caught any flak for the message it ends up battering the viewer over the head with: that it's fine and dandy to spy on and lie to the public as long as you're catching TERRZTZ.

Yeah by the same token you could say that the message of all the Batman films is that it's fine to summarily execute criminals. Which it is, as long as you're Batman.

Now now, the Batman never kills anyone, or lets them die, no matter how bad they are.
Er - except in Dark Knight.

Batman does not kill... The thing that separates him from the villains, the only thing.

He's smoked loads of people over the course of his career (he used to have guns), particularly in the lazy Tim Burton interpretations, but canonically, he doesn't kill anyone. At least, not unless sparing them would lead to some bigger disaster.

Not to say that he isn't a nutcase, though. He loves crippling people.

To be quite honest, I'd rather someone like The Goddamned Batman did this than the Government.

And at least he had the common decency to give Fox the know-how necessary to destroy the machine once he'd finished with it.
