Fascinating. Nice to see that around 0AD/BC the Iranians were doing much better than almost all animal life put together.

Now they're fighting a losing battle with the Lemurs and Apes though. I'd be to intrigued see the working that lead to the conclusion that the peak time of Bacteria and Fungi was about 1550AD.

It seems to correlate with the expansion of the British Empire. I can only think that the invention of Fungal Knack 1700(c) by renowned bacteria hater Father McTringy put paid to their fuzzy and stinking empire.

She recommends "The German Genius" - it's apparently a massive tome of a thing, so you're well advised to get it on Kindle, but it's "pretty much everything you could need to know".

Hmm... whilst looking at the one on Amazon, I saw this book on Anglo-German relations:

I'm pretty sure I was at college with him.

I wonder how hard that would be to do - you could, with the right data , do a sort of "proportion of total posts" sort of slidery thingy. Maybe as a proportion of the previous month's posts so that when people stop or start posting the effect is quite sudden, rather than very slowly increasing their total of the whole.

How about 12 manageable monthly payments of £30?

Do it! Do it for the Lombards, cut off in their prime by the Franks. Do it for the Proto-Negroids, caught between Mediterranean Man and the Australoids. Tamerlane would want you to do it, as he plundered from Baghdad to Moscow. Orkham would want you to do it, as he ruled wisely. Sennacherib would want you to do it, as he shocked Asia by destroying the Holy City of Babylon. DO IT!

Man, what just happened then? Everything just stopped. It's almost as if someone pulled a few gigs worth of posting data out of the database.

That histomap is really cool -- but what does the x axis mean? Where's the data from. I don't agree that the HRE was 3x as 'powerful' as France in 1100.

My guess would be that he used the highly scientific "finger-in-the-air" method of gathering data, although I imagine he had to fall back to the "pull-the-numbers-out-of-my-arse" system on occasions. I've no idea how you'd measure the relative power of China and the Arabs in 950AD, what with neither of those being a single political entity and being on other sides of the world from each other.

You probably could, if you had the right data, make some rough estimates based on things like military strength and state income, but half the histomap would be a fuzzy blob as the actual data would be vague or imprecise.

The main thing is you can't prove it's incorrect.

And it looks awesome.

If you're into the Unification period William Carr's "The Origins of the Wars of German Unification" is about a good a start as any. In fact Carr's introductory books on German history are pretty much a de facto undergraduate starting point. Well written, easy to follow, full of detail.

LIKE. It's intersting to see how quickly stuff can change. Mongols!

It would be cool to see a slightly larger area - Interesting stuff was happening in North Africa and the Middle East as well!

I know. It's just that I've been searching all my life for the perfect time-lapse visualisation of history, but I can never quite find it! It's out there somewhere, I know!
