I am so jammy. I had assumed that as I'm leaving the current employer at the end of the year (making an even 50 weeks working there - woot!) and they pay bonuses in March, I wouldn't be eligible, but I've been told today I am! 13% here we come. Less tax, obv. *shakes fist at George Osbourne* Anyway, that's a nice leaving present.

I interviewed and got a job that then became frozen, got a call saying its now reopen and am I still interested.
I am awaiting the paperwork which hopefully is forthcoming this week.

I am not sure what to do though. In essence its the same type of job I do now (technical support, end user training) in a slightly different environment (diagnostics, rather than research), a smaller territory, for more money, but maybe slightly less perks (but money would cover those, such as health insurance).

Hmmm...not sure what to do. Guess I cant even say until I see the offer in writing.
I had kinda forgotten about it, as they said it likely wouldnt open again until spring.

In other good news, I have a potentially buyer round to view my place this saturday. Hopefully they show up unlike the last one

A couple of years ago Manchester City Council were offering 70% grants (or thereabouts) for cavity wall insulation, so we applied to them and a surveyor came to have a look at the house. He said the cavity wasn't wide enough and the insulation wouldn't get properly distributed within it, so we didn't go ahead.

I've had phone calls and people at the door since then, all trying to get me to install it, but I've always told them what the surveyor said and left it at that.

We had a couple of guys call recently while I was out, and they told Mrs W that the latest type of insulation will work in our walls. I was going to look into this further, but then a surveyor from British Gas called today so I talked it through with him. Not only did he drill some test holes in the walls to check the gap was big enough, he also told me that it's now completely free for British Gas customers. This would be a total 'Yay' except that they'll need to use scaffolding to get at the wall about the kitchen extension, as the tiles are too thin to take the weight of the installers. That's going to cost £350, but I can live with that.

My dad enquired about cavity wall insulation and the salesman said that he wouldn't have it done if he was him. He reckoned that the cavity in the walls is there for a reason and you shouldn't mess with the construction of the house especially since the insulation goes below the damp course.

Then again... my house has had the walls insulated, I have a certificate to prove it! Although, when I had some of the living room wall chopped out to fit some French doors, the insulation was sparse at best. There was hardly any to be seen!

It is a warm house though.

If the salesman was advising potential customers NOT to buy his product I don't imagine he lasted long in the job.

My only concern about having it installed was that there would be cold spots if it didn't fill the cavity properly and that I'd be wasting my money.

It depends on the type of fill. Early CWI was often a bit hit and miss, but in modern times contractors may choose EPS beads of various materials and diameters, which makes the chance of big missed areas much less. In any case you'll get cold bridges around the windows as they didn't design in thermal breaks until the last 10 years or so, so in context it's always a worthwhile improvement.

Also with the beads there's pretty much a zero chance of transferring damp from one side to the other. I'd do it if either of my houses had cavity walls.

My folks had cavity wall insulation put in about 4 or 5 years ago into their 70s detached house. Since it was put in the house is lovely and warm, yes, but the loft space now gets masses of condensation - everything up there has had to be covered in plastic sheeting as the water is literally dripping off the inside of the roof.

Hmm, that's probably not due to CWI - did they have loft insulation fitted or upgraded around the same time?
What normally happens is that the effectiveness of the that insulation restricts heat from coming up through the ceilings - this allows the roof timbers and everything else in there to become cold.

No problem, but your older properties have no "vapour barrier" in the walls and ceilings, so moisture from the activity of the occupants still permeates through to the loft, but now condenses on the colder surfaces.

The way to solve this is simply to improve the ventilation in the roof space - add vent tiles or vents in the eaves. And it needs doing, because constant moisture on the woodwork will cause it to rot in short order. Also check whether the bathroom and kitchen extractor fans are present and working - reducing moisure in the rooms may solve the problem anyway.

I'm now writing for IndieGames.com & doing community & support for IndieRoyale.com. It's a part time job, I do one post every week day for them on indie games, and then check the email/twitter/facebook for support stuff for indie royale. The bundle is only on for 5 days, and they have roughly 2 every month. I will still have tonnes of time for SavyGamer & RPS.

It's triple the pay for about half the amount of work I was doing in my previous freelance gig, and with what they're paying me on top of what I earn from SavyGamer, I think I am now rich.

My grandmother has been let home from hospital, nearly a whole year after she was admitted.

She can now walk a few steps. Still needs a lot of care, but as it was the first time in my life I haven't been able to talk with her almost daily on the phone if not face to face, I have missed her dearly. She is mostly pleased that she can watch Strictly Come Dancing.
