Nope - not normally any notifications until a day or two before - online Amazon seem the best for BF3 at the moment £38 for the limited edition - the cheap game sites are currently suggesting that Asda will sell the game itself on Launch day for £34

New MW3 trailer

Also double XP on *all* COD games for this coming weekend and theres some type of reward / medal thing for prestiging in previous games (although I've no idea how your suppose to do that with COD4 if the games are still all hacked)

I'm getting more and more worried about Battlefield 3.

First, there was the underwhelming beta with that shite map. Basic functionality seems to have gone out of the window - http://i.imgur.com/LtY5H.jpg - something I commented on earlier in the thread after playing the beta. The menu system and the HUD is totally inadequate and unclear. Form over function.

Reviews are talking about the singleplayer campaign being a bit gash and a waste of time. This has taken development time away from the multi which is also not without its faults. Basically, they've gone after CoD too hard instead of making Battlefield 3. Worst fears confirmed. A swing and a miss.

I'll still be getting it, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the multiplayer with chums based on the beta and its similarities to Bad Company 2 which I loved, but I also get the impression that I'm going to be underwhelmed. This is seeming less the sequel to Battlefield 2 and more a half-baked effort to please everyone.

Hell, at least you know what you're getting with CoD. It might not make huge (or any) leaps year-on-year, but you get a consistent experience with, at the very least, more features than last year. DICE don't seem to know what they're playing at. We wanted a true successor to Battlefield. It's not like anyone who gives a shit about online FPSes isn't going to buy both any way. Why attempt to pit two completely polar games* against each other?

*At least within the FPS genre. I realise they're both modern military shooters.

I was very keen on it before the beta just because of the presentations / trailers but I found the demo very underwhelming.

Since then I'm more worried about it being 'broken' in some way by the blocking of reviews before release - I dont buy the 'the day 1 patch will fix everything' and even if it did thats not the way to sell a game (yeah the one we made was broken 2 months ago when we had to give the disk code out so we'll work on it right up until release day)

I have a bad feeling they started with the release date and worked back just so they could get the game out before COD

I'd already decided I wasn't getting this but that review does make multiplayer sound decent. I think ill still leave it though, if I notice people still playing (and people I never play cod with) in a month or two then I might get it but I know that once CoD comes out I will abandon other ganesh to play and it would seem too much like a waste of money.

Now I've actually had a chance to watch the prestige shop video its quite interesting - so you get a prestige point for each prestige *plus* one for each game if you've already prestiged in MW / WoW / MW2 / Blops , you can spend those points on :

Extra Custom Class - an extra custom class
Double XP - Double XP for *TWO HOURS* in game
Double Weapon XP - Double XP for your weapon for *TWO HOURS* in game (to rank up a weapon)
Regular package - Dont know
Unlock Gear - Pick any item and have it available from Level 1 on that prestige (i.e. in blops start have your Commando at Level 1)
Hardended package - Dont know
Veteran Package - Dont know
RESET ALL STATS ! - remove all your prestige and points and go back to a real level 1 player (there must be something else for this right ?)

from the other BF games i've played, i expected it to be the other way around. Always thought it was a better solo game than mp.

Anyone found any good preorder deals for COD yet? I preordered earlier from tesco for £34.90

Well, now, ain't this some shady shit.

Quote:
Earlier in the year, Electronic Arts said (via Sony's Jack Tretton) that Battlefield 3 on the PS3 would ship with a free copy of Battlefield 1943 -- a potentially sweet selling point to the deal-conscious gamer. Well, it wasn't until the game's launch day yesterday that customers found out EA had changed the deal. There's no freebie in there.

To make up for any potential deception, EA will instead be offering downloadable content "early" on the PlayStation Network, something we already knew from a previous announcement.

"In lieu of 1943 being available on disk for PS3 customers, EA has made all BF3 expansions available early to PS3 customers," said the company.

To announce something that may well have influenced pre-oders, renege on the offer, and then pretend that selling you extra shit early is some sort of compensation? Wow, that's shady even by EA standards.

I'm trying to picture the kind of person who would deem that acceptable, but all I can imagine is a three-legged dog desperately craving its master's approval and I am pretty certain that's exactly how Electronic Arts sees its customers.

I preordered BF3 in June. Three days ago I cancelled it. I still don't know what to do. I have four hours left to repreorder if I want it tomorrow.

And no, I'm not getting MW3 - it's Battlefield or nothing.

If you dont mind paying a few extra quid for points the supermarkets do seem to be doing the game for £25 when you buy points at the same time

(Sainsburys mentioned in link above but i'd expect the same from Tesco)

BTW for anyone looking to prestige in the older MW games i've found Cod5 is just as bad as Cod4 was - i played a few games last night and faced someone who was impossible to kill (they ended up on around 55 kills and no deaths) and more of the 'hacking lobby adverts over the maps' in other games :-(

MW2 seems to be fine for online games and so is BLOPS

I have repreordered it. Now I'm sat looking at it deciding whether to cancel it again.

I don't drop £40 on games lightly and I still honestly don't know what the right decision is.

It's the single player/co-op that's put me off more than anything else. Multiplayer sounds like Battlefield as it should be. I guess I could just ignore the SP, but being an achievement hunter means I can't bring myself to do that.

I love you Flis.

FWIW, I'm getting it. I'm still in brainfreeze mode, but if I don't buy it I know I'll regret it as I've been looking forward to it for a year (I even have next week booked off so I can play it).

At least if the campaign is bad it's quickly over and done with. It would be worse if the MP was shit.

Had a quick go, managed to get into one game before the servers crapped out.

On that very small sample it seems throughly great, if you liked BC2 then it is basically more of the same but prettier.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but the multiplayer trailer on XBL for MW3 looks great. It's about specialists, basically people who like getting good kill death ratios are rewarded with killstreaks like missiles, turrets etc. People who like support roles like assists, capturing objectives etc get support killstreaks like UAV, sentry guns etc and their streaks are point streaks rather than kills which carry on when they die. The final role, I forget what it's called, as they unlock their streak they get a new perk every two kills until they have every perk
Seems like an attempt at appealing to the people who complain that MW is too hard to get into for casual players.
I can't wait!

Yep, MW3 is shaping up nicely. I saw that trailer as well Gill. Pretty much my main complaint with the series is the focus on killstreak rewards and how they necessitate selfish camping, even in objective based game modes. They seem to have tackled that head onc and I'm properly excited to get my hands on the game.

A week on Tuesday for MW3

Tescos's Battlefield offer is slightly unusual (photo to follow) - the game is £38.something and you get it for £33 if you pre-order MW3 at the same time (you can cancel the MW3 pre-order at any point and your not commited to buying it)

From that I would say the Sainsbury one at £25 if you buy points at the same time is the best deal (as long as you'll use the points anyway)

Slightly more in depth thoughts from my limited time last night

Installed the disk to my hard disk.
Loaded the game, to be told I needed to install the HD textures to my hard disk too.
Then I needed to enter a preorder code to get some unlocks
Then I needed to enter an online access code to get multiplayer.
Then I needed to sign up to the "Gun Club" to get another unlock.
Then I needed to sign up to battlelog to get access to stats etc...
(Which wasn't working last night, but is up and running now)

Finally I got to start the game, which crapped out because the servers weren't working :D

Whatever happened to just putting in a disc and pressing start?

When I did manage to get into a game, it was bloody brilliant, if you like BF:BC2 then this is pretty much more of the same, but prettier and
turned up a bit in a visceral sense(at least it was on the conquest map I joined)

Assault class now has the medikit, and the new support class has the heavy machine guns and ammo packs. Not sure about that yet, it might help with balance, but maybe it'll just swing it towards roving assault death teams, rather than the medic teams in BF:BC2

The menu is bloody awful, a confusing mess, and I couldn't find how to turn on hardcore mode? Maybe that isn't available in quick match?

Needs more playing to give a proper review, but by the little gametime I managed to get I have very high hopes in the actual gameplay. Just a shame the menu is the usual Dice crap and the servers are the usual EA crap :D

Of course, that's how simple Steam is, where pre-order DLC is automatically added without codes and patches are downloaded and installed automatically in the background.

Assuming you have steam installed and patched up to the latest version, of course ;)

But anyway, can't play with my 360 bum chums on steam!

Also, should we split to a specific BF3 thread now it is released?

Yeah. But my point remains: the process of starting up and playing a AAA game for the first time is now significantly more hassle on a console than it is on PC, and has been for some time now.

And reading through the list of Troopers steps its all to try and combat the 2nd hand market (with all the various DLC and update 'codes' which need to be entered) whereas PC is virtually all digital distribution so doesnt have that problem.
