Been reading a bit about this. Just look at some of the comments on Eurogamer's review on NeoGaf. What utter bollocking rampant bullshit.

There's another thread with a post from David Jaffe. He can't write for shit but he makes a decent stab at defending EG's score.

I must admit, I still think NeoGAF is a great forum. It's just with so many users, you're bound to get a few hundred thousand morons in the pot as well. Glad someone succinctly pointed out the stupidity and quoted it all for posterity.

I've decided I want to be a games reviewer on the Internet. Every review would simply say "you are all whining moronic man-children" and the score will be 9/10 so that they'll never notice.

I'd agree with that. I'd give them a solid 8. I think the production values are amazing and if the gameplay was as good then it would be a ten but it's actually pretty average. I never wanted to replay either of them.

I find that the combat tends to drag.

When your cahracter complained about the new unfeasible amount of enemies and you agree with him, you know that there could be improvements.

I don't think I'd necessarily disagree with you guys, but I just loved the first two as experiences. They were big budget, summer blockbuster style action. They struck a chord with me as a certain type of colourful adventure game that I hadn't experienced since the original Tomb Raider. They're certainly not perfect and definitely not short of gameplay faults. I just really enjoyed them regardless.

In fact, I enjoyed Uncharted 2 to the point where it was probably my favourite game of that year! Something about them tickled my Indiana Jones loving inner-child.

I really enjoyed them too, but like you say in just the same way as a summer blockbuster. Even if I really enjoy them while they last neither are things that really leave much of an impact on me. Hence I'd say 8/10 is a reasonable score. But that seems to be the problem with the reaction to the Eurogamer review, it's as though 8/10 is some sort of critical drubbing.

And dare I say it, do bad games exist anymore? I’m talking real stinkers the likes of which we’ve seen in Iznogoud on the PSone and Last Action Hero on the Amiga.

Sure, we’ve got stuff that we would consider rubbish but they may appeal to a certain demographic (stuff like Barbie games etc)

I think the majority of gamers, like ourselves, are all switched on enough to not worry about buying a rubbish game.

These are just your average internet videogame fans, guys. Mentalists to a man, and often displaying zealous loyalty to companies they don't work for, in support of games they've never played.

In my glorious empire, putting an arbitrary number at the end of a review would be an offence punishable by death. Reviews would need to be read from start to finish, and ADHD-addled cretins would be subjected to a written test to make sure they read the review, else they wouldn't get their Ritalin prescription.

Everybody would also have to sign a waiver stating that they understand that reviews are primarily opinion pieces, and they may conflict with their own, and that complaining just because you don't share the reviewers opinion is punishable by having a clown suit surgically grafted to your body, and having the word "IDIOT" tattooed on your forehead.

And if you complain about a review before even PLAYING the fucking game? Thrown naked into a pit of rabid Bonobos and ape-raped to death.

I loved the first Unchartered and would consider buying a PS3 again just for the sequels. I'd agree about it being a solid 8 though, there were some real flaws. Like going into an undiscovered tomb that hadn't been opened for ninety billion years and you'd just swung, jumped, hopped and shuffled your way there via an incredibly complicated and dangerous route, solving puzzles as you go, only to discover 372 armed mercenaries inside waiting for you. But yeah. Loved it anyway. Felt like playing your way through a blockbuster movie.

I loved that one Edge where they ditched the scores.

I don't bother with most review sites any more, especially not games ones. It's too corrupt, and what do I care what an anonymous person thinks of something? Pretty much since the Halo 1 Edge fallout I've not bothered.

The best bit is the comments, where someone accuses me of spoilers, for that!

I never played Uncharted 1 so I can't comment on that but the second was all kinds of awesome. The opening train section was brilliant and sticks with me as one of the best opening sections of any game I've played. The isolation, the imminent danger and the comedy quips. It was typical Indy and sets the tone beautifully.

Anyway, I might be wrong (so feel free to correct me if I am), but I can't remember any level where I entered a thousand year old tomb, jumped and shimmied along innumerable ledges to be confronted by a load of guards. I remember when I entered a tomb and had inadvertantly led an army my way, and I remember the end when the bad guys had got there first but I can't remember any level where ten soliders were waiting around a corner as described above. Again, I'd only played the sequel so this was be a problem with the first or my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

I didn't play the second but it was one of few criticisms I had with the game so I'm sure it would have been something they'd have picked up on and fixed for the second

Ill pick this up when its sub £20, like the other two.
I really liked the games in general, but the combat was just too much at times, felt sooo grindy.
Uncharted 2 was undoubtedly awesome tho and I expect 3 to be one of the titles of the year for PS3.

As for what some site scores the game, Im suprised people still really care that much.

I'm enjoying watching the fallout in all honesty. I like to watch idiots make fools out of themselves from time to time... If I had popcorn I'd be throwing it into my mouth with a big grin.

It's a shame the people complaining are not then molested and killed by sexually deviant chimps, but I've still got a few years in me to conquer the universe.

Seems like as good a place to discuss review scores. Eurogamer has ditched theirs.

Which seems a ballsy move but one I'm excited by. Scores too often seemed to fuel the tribalism that drives so many hormone-addled gamers. And distilling an experience down to an arbitrary feeling number always seemed a cop out. This should encourage better writing, I'd hope.

Think the three categories of Essential, Recommended and Avoid should do a better job of guiding a buyer - provided the writing is up to the job.

How the fuck can I know if a game is worth my attention if it's not been arbitrarily scored with a number upon which I can then hang all of my expectations? I am going to have to actually read the words now instead of just scrolling to the bottom to get the number and then frothing accordingly based on what my expectation of what the number should be.
