Agreed. I don't know if that was Decca's intention, but it really draws the eye in and actually IMO detracts from the people in the pic.

I can only assume it's a monitor / gamut issue for you guys. The car seems perfectly fine here, not jumping out at all. Texture wise it does contrast with everything else though, maybe that's what's doing it.

Compositionally it's right behind the guys line of sight looking at his mate skinning up :D I guess that throws it into focus too.

Cars shouldn't have been there at all, >:( in fact I'd bet money they got towed or ticketed later as that's a strictly no parking not even for dropping off zone at that time.

If only there was a plugin for Photoshop that made it easier for you. It'd be called the plugin plugin.

Without the background it just looked creepy tbh I find that making it more open gives it more context and room to breath.

I love that second one, it's hard to take photos of animals without the feeling that it's been done before but you nailed this one just right.

Trying out something different, there is the obligatory B&W version as well. (as I said on there, my dad always asks for black and white conversions of everything so I've started doubling up to save time)

Love that middle pic of the tiger, Decca. I just can't get behind the idea of a photo of a tiger in black and white though, I'm afraid. The colouring is too iconic.

I don't often comment in this thread but I agree about the Tiger picture. They should be in colour rather than black and white.

But then again, what do I know?

it's on my flicker, I've uploaded so many today and I don't want to make this thread like me stream. The B&W makes the glare less noticeable - tigers were taken through glass.

Don't be simple, do you have eyes? Then congrats you are just as qualified to be an art critic as anyone else on the planet and there ain't no one who gets to make you think otherwise.

edit: My b&w tiger pictures may very well have an audience of one but so long as my dad likes 'em black and white I'll keep makin' em black and white because gosh darn it's been 20 years (discounting children) since I've done anything that makes him proud :luv:

Love that last bee pic malc, and I love the first tiger pic too decca. I think I agree with your dad for that particular shot, though. The B/W version looks better to me but I couldn't really say why.

I prefer B&W, myself! Makes me look at the patterns, the eyes and the texture more - but I get your point. Superb 'padding tiger' there. Love the way its licking its chops, makes me feel nervous. Surprised you didn't shake out of nervousness!

Pretty much everything posted recently is excellent. Love the bee in pumpkin flower. Really feels like you're down there with it. The grasshopper looks surprisingly expressive for all its armoured strangeness. The Echinacea flower is gloriously colourful and sticky. Love the muted colours on MarkG's fell photo and the line of trees working with hills and cloud, great backdrop to a simple, direct photo. The British museum photo is a great pattern, normally I'd go for B&W but I think your choice of colour here works better, such a lovely eggshell blue. You need to heal the blur-smudge top corner though. Great colours of the Underground, you can smell the ozone and feel the stifling clamminess of the night. Gelato is fun too. Good DOF.

I've been going to Yorkshire halls today too, Decca. It is in Yorkshire, right? Looks kinda like it with the stone and architecture and all. I love those types of places.

I think they're all good. I especially like the donkeys, the full shot of the pier and the closeup of the wheel.

Tonight I've decided to have a crack at Lightroom. Been messing around with this pic of a grain elevator I took yesterday - to be honest, after Picasa and Windows Live Photo Editor I feel like I've run headlong into a brick wall...

Lightroom's a big step up from picasa. I had a look but it was just a bit too complex. I use Adobe's Camera Raw plugin for photoshop to process my images.

Lightroom is really quite straightforward for most types of fixes. Did you try reading the manual or looking at some tutorials before giving up?

I haven't given up. I looked at it for about 5 minutes and decided it needed a bigger commitment that I had time for. I've got no need of the library and file management features so it felt like I was being forced to work in a way that I'm not comfortable with.

Aye although I just let it do its thing WRT libraries. I still have Picasa running and that still maintains it's library when pics are imported through Lightroom and is far better for just flicking through than Lightroom but for all but the simplest tweaks I just can't use Picasa any more. This is probably a horribly inefficient way of working when it comes to disk space, though.

In case anyone's interested, here's how I manage my 'workflow' with regards to photos.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I have a 'Photos' folder with 2 further folders underneath called 'Digicam' and 'RAW'.

Digicam has folders for years (2002-2011 and 'Undated' for the pre digital age) and inside those is a dated folder for each 'event'.

For example Digicam > 2011 > 2011-08-22, Blackpool

RAW has dated folders in a similar fashion but just corresponding to that date that I copied off the SD card.

I run Adobe Bridge on the dated RAW folders and open the contents in Adode Camera RAW, moving through one by one and rejecting/editing as needed, then saving out as jpeg to the necessary Digicam folder. The RAW files remain untouched.

I backup both folders to my laptop about once a month and about every 6 weeks to the external drive that normally sits on my desk at work.

MrsPaz mocks my organisation and says she wishes I kept everything so neat and tidy.

I think she wants me to shave.

You're probably wrong about that.
