Not really. The problems and technology are the same. I've been running wireless in this house for five years without a single issue until the router itself died, at which point I replaced it. The tech works - and if there's a specific problem with a single device, there will be a root cause in there somewhere.

At my last place, I had no wireless issues at all either, just using a cheapo router with an old NTL modem. Since moving here, it's been less than perfect, but that's only because Virgin replaced my modem for an all-in-one thing that doesn't seem very good. However, it's obviously not been bad enough for me to complain to Virgin about yet.

I wouldn't see me move to a wired connection, although that's partly because I rent. I'm curious about Powerline technology though so I might get a couple of adapters one day, but just out of curiosity.

I do use powerline stuff as well, for streaming. If your wiring's decent, they're excellent, but there's no real way to tell without getting some or being Kalmar or some shit.

Oh yeah, give it a try with no security, if you've got some. I always forget that people have wireless security turned on!

Once you've done that, stop being mentals and plug the damned thing in. A new laptop!?

to add to the buy a new router arguement. ive been through half a dozen of the fuckers over the years and they all started off fine, but ended up doing crazy stuff. the best was the netgear that would crash the wired ethernet if i connected up my netbook to the wireless. anything else worked fine and the netbook used to work fine, until one day it didnt. no amount of settings or reboots helped. buying a new router did

This argument is entirely reasonable. The front tyres on my car need replacing, and a couple of weeks ago the car made a noise (now fixed) so I'm thinking of buying a brand new car.

One of my friends did exactly this.

I think the argument for a new laptop is that, if it is a signal issue, then a laptop can be moved to somewhere with a better signal.

Also, frustration. Different things have been stopping me from using my PC for about three weeks now. One of my Masters modules is entirely web based and I have an assignment due in next week.

I'm pretty sure that if you were struggling to get your car put right and had an important journey coming up you'd be considering a plan b.

Unless you could fix your car by plugging it in with a £10 bit of wire filling it up with petrol.

This may be a silly question, but have you tried moving the router?

The exciting (and cheap) end to this tale was that I moved the card to a different PCI slot. It seems to have been ok for the last week or so.

You should've bought a new router.

I have ten wireless devices at home and don't have any problems at all.

It is because the new PCI slot is closer to the router.

Have you tried relocating your house so you actually live inside the telephone exchange?

Does this mean you're not buying her a new laptop now?

Have you tried a hostile takeover of the carphone warehouse and disconnecting all their existing customers and redirecting the whole pipe to your pc ?

My modem/router is a bit of a pain sometimes. It'll be Ok for weeks, and then will spend a couple of days where it just keeps dropping out for a minute or two before coming back.

Turning it off for a bit usually helps. I should probably get a new, better one at some point. I've had pretty much a year out of it, and it was the one I got free from the telco, and although it's done OK for me (recent flakiness aside) it's probably a bit shit in the grand router scheme.

Also, I have to pronounce it 'row-ter' out here, as 'roo-ter' is a rudey word (like fucker, pretty much).

There's a great song by an Australian band called TISM that connects the singer to Australian rules footballer Shane Crawford that just goes "I rooted a girl, who rooted a guy, who rooted a girl,[...] who rooted Shaaaaaaane Craaaawfoooooord!"
