Ahem. Yes. Tomorrow morning, me and MrsP are off to New York. If I never come back, assume I have been mutated into a Ninja Turtle and live happily in the sewers eating Pizza.

Any Beex-approved recommendations for restaurants around the Madison Square Garden area?

Have a good time, Son. No restaurants, sorry - I've not eaten outside of downtown.

I highly recommend going to see USS Intrepid.

Ace! Have a great time.

If you have the time and love sleazy rundown seaside resorts, Coney Island is worth the subway ride. This was one of the sideshows when I visited in August 2007:

Three things... I probably can't afford downtown, or at least not the taxi fare back up to w34th.

Secondly, will do on the Intrepid

Thirdly, 'son'? You're like 2 years older than me, man. :)

Cabs are cheap, but I wouldn't recommend using them more than once just so you can marvel at how such a large vehicle can have so little room in the back. The thing is, Manhattan isn't very big - you could walk from 34th down to Battery park in about 25 mins and it's a great way to see the city.

There was a great diner on the corner of 8th and 22nd which I used to eat breakfast in quite regularly. It's a shame you're taking your missus though. You can have a lot fun in NYC if you're single :p

Another tip is this - it literally doesn't sleep there and most people eat out between and 8 and 10pm and then hit the bars, so most of the decent bars in the downtown area south of Houston (pronounced House - ton) in the area, funnily enough, called SoHo will be pretty quiet if you pitch up before 10pm, but then they stay open til 5am.

You try buying a pack of fags on a Sunday afternoon in Downtown Manhattan then tell me it doesn't sleep.

Heh. In Vegas earlier this year I asked for 20 Marlboro Lights and then had to spend 10 minutes explaining when she got 20 packs out for me.

See, what I found when I went in 05 (or should that be 5?) is Sinatra was talking bollocks. Free-entry bars shut at midnight, and clubs and stuff at 2am. Wandering around at 3am looking for somewhere to buy a beer was like walking around in a ghost town.

My only New York hint would be to get in the Taxi before you tell him where you want to go.

My New York hint would be to not accept a taxi ride off strangers when you leave the airport - find a taxi yourself. Otherwise you might do as I did when I went (on my own) and ended up in an unlicensed cab.

Just off the phone with Scottish Power, who I was gearing up to giving a bollocking over trying to charge me for 983 units when I actually only used 75.
Annoyingly, they put it right efficiently and courteously so I didn't get the chance.

Their online system is a complete disaster area though. Not only is it largely useless, flakey as hell but it has major design flaws and things like saying "use the menu options on the left" when they are in fact on the right.

Last time I was there (which, coincidentally, was in 05), we spent all night in a variety of bars before going for breakfast at about 5am. I couldn't possibly tell you where these bars were though, other than "somewhere near the bottom bit".

Yeah, I think the licensing laws are pretty relaxed - the bars have to be closed 2 out of every 24 hours IIRC. Most of the bars I frequented were either on or within a few blocks south of Bleecker St., which is one street north of Houston St (E&W), which is very much lower Manhattan as Bleecker runs into 1st St on the East Side.

Grant's Tomb is worth visiting, if a little out of the way these days. Of course, my thoughts on leaving the shrine to the great general* were: 'this could make for an ace bar: sure he'd approve'.

Next door has been away for a week.

Their dog has been particularly dull in this time.

So, I decided to retrain it over the fence.

It now associates "Jack! NO!" with getting a treat on the picnic table and "walkies" with a treat if it stays put in the middle of the lawn until the command "come on then".

Sometimes I excel myself.
