Very good this.
Graphics: Not a good start for XC2 & The Switch out the gate because I swear XCX on the WiiU looks better than this. Much better. It redeems itself somewhat with some great atmosphere and large expansive worlds but, I’m reluctant to say, I preferred the worlds from XC & XCX. I really loved XCXs world a lot. Also it loses points because, frankly, the Switch is such a piddling piece of crap that the frame rate tanks hard in more than a few places, especially in some combat sequences.
Sound: I hated the English dub when I started but it grew on me like the fondness one might have for their kidnapper. The music is outstanding though. Turned out there was a Japanese dub that you could switch to but you had to download it. I did download it some 60 hours into the game so I stuck with the English. Don’t be me.
Story: The story is decidedly less messed up with fewer twists and turns than XC. And XCX for that matter. The plot does tie in with XC but only in the last 3 chapters. Oh, and only the worst plot points of XC at that: the infamous stupid space station bit.
Gameplay: It’s a JRPG but not turn based so you get that cool crossbred of selecting moves each with their own cool down metres and stuff. This adds in timed button commands which can keep you in the game but you can still have battles that last over 30 minutes (if you’re unlucky enough) and still manage to make a cup of tea while everyone is fighting it out. The good: the combat is entertaining and deep, the worlds are groovy, there’s a surprising amount of secrets hidden away, the story keeps you chugging along, the girls all have giant balloons stuck on their chests, the heart to heart moments are still fab, the quests aren’t too bad, the challenge is challenging throughout so keep levelled up, and basically I loved most of it.
The bad: the graphics range from great to ugly as win, the texture work is appalling in places and some cutscenes just have giant blocky textures like no one gave a shit, the geometry of some environments also ranges from great to here’s a box which is supposed to be a house, the frame rate is bad in parts, the English dub isn’t great and typically for a JRPG it’s all pregnant pauses and screaming people’s names, but, and this is a big but, I can see beyond these annoyances and enjoy this massive universe and doss around with stats and monsters and questing for ages HOWEVER some of the mechanics are just fucking stupid. Like how some of the main quests require certain people with certain stats: mastery of water, noppon wisdom, eating a mars bar, ability to eat bogies, definitely not a paedo and so on. Only some characters have these stats and those are randomly allocated and characters are randomly generated. At one point only one main character had a certain stat - say noppon wisdom - I needed to pass a story gate but I needed it at level 5 or some shit. Certain abilities require you to do different things to upgrade that ability through different levels so I had to get it to level 2 by talking to noppons (like 50 of the fuckers), the level 3 by using my noppon guy to cast a certain move 10 times and then level 4 to blah blah. It was just tired shit for no reason. But I could get around this by generating a random character from a stack of special cubes and see if I could get another character with noppon wisdom and then equip those two characters together and have a level 3 and a level 2 to get the level 5 requirement. I’d got 50, I’m just rambling now and doubt anyone is reading, of these standard cubes and did about 30 rolls and didn’t get anyone with this ability, but I had 15 rare cubes and rolled them all and still didn’t get one so I just chugged away at levelling up this character. But then to get level 5 I had to defeat 5 certain enemies. There isn’t a creature index or whatever so you’re just given a name and a vague world. So off I went to the world and had a look around and couldn’t see anything so off I went online to look it up and it turns out this creature is in a secret area I hadn’t been and probably wouldn’t have found without someone online helpfully highlighting the area. I could have kept rolling the special cubes and accumulating more but that could have gone on forever. Anyway, it was just a garbage way to lock off story content. And that’s not all because it locks off certain side quests and other content in the same way. And god forbid if you’ve got the right number of levels cumulatively but can’t equip them on your different characters because you can only use 2 of the main characters 3 slots because you can’t even take Pyra off and the character with the ability you need to be equipped can’t be used with another character you’ve got. Fuck. If I’ve got a bank of these guys in my pocket can’t it just take the cumulative amount from everyone in the Pokédex rather than having to try put round pegs into a fucking triangular hole. JRPGs are funny sodding games
The ugly: There’s still those fucking irritating Noppon which will make you want to jump off a roof and impale yourself on a spiked fence.
Conclusion: another super JRPG, just not god tier like XC and XCX. Oh and the Switch is about as powerful as a wet fart.
