My lad has hit the age he is having friends round, which is awesome. They play on the playstation, also awesome. they take over my living room, not so awesome.

I want to put a PS4 in another room, so they can play in there.

What is the best way for him to play on his games? He does not have Ps+
Am I best buying a new one for me and just move the old one upstairs?

Are your games on disk or PSN purchases? Does he have his own PSN account or does he use yours?

Mixture of both disk and psn.

He uses my PSN for FIFA. The others he has his own non PSN account.

Will he still use the PS4 in the living room if he has his own one?

Both I think, but mainly his own.

Primary PS4 in the bedroom, secondary in the living room I guess.

That means he'll be able to play games on his own account in his room, and play them on your account in the living room. He can play online (using your account) in either room.

So a PS4 Pro for me

Some notes:

a) Disc games work on whichever PS4 they are in. Unsurprisingly.

b) PSN won't let you sign in on two PS4s at once. So he won't be able to use your account at the same time you do.

c) Games bought from PSN (including free PS+ games) always work for the PSN account that buys them, on any PS4. You can play your stuff on both consoles.

d) Each PSN account has a "primary" PS4. On the primary PS4, and only that one, content from that PSN account works for all signed-in users. That's why your son can play your PSN purchases under his own PSN account today; you have one PS4 and that's your primary. You can change which console is your primary at any time through Settings on the PS4. When you get a second PS4, one of them is not going to work for him; he will not be able to play PSN content owned by your PSN account on one of your two PS4s. You'll have to pick which one and/or re-buy some PSN games under his account and/or buy games on disc (but even then, DLC is still PSN content, so that's not a total solution.)

e) Note that your son can also use your PS+ account's ability to play online under his PSN account when signed into your primary PS4. He doesn't need your account to play FIFA online. More: https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-h ... station-4/

Are you sure you mean he doesn't have a PSN account? Or do you mean he has a PSN account but that account doesn't have PS+?

But he'll have different savegames and different progressions on both.

Got it. You're probably going to want to "upgrade" that to a PSN account (not a PS+ account) so he can have the same account on both PS4s. If only for trophy syncing.

Were it my child, the solution to negate this sort of issue (and cost) would literally be "get a 360".

Is it not get a PS vita in a box (i cant even remember what they were called but its a small streaming box they could use to stream to the main PS4 from another room).

Yeah, that PS4 family thing does everything I think you want it to do, Kov. And you can administer it and parental control the fuck out of it.

We used to buy 4 copies of everything back in the olden days! That got hella expensive.

Hang on -- family accounts don't allow more permissive sharing of purchased content than normal ones do, do they? Or am I wrong? Why do you need to buy fewer copies now?

Sorry, I suppose I really meant 'in addition to'. They can game share once he's made the kids PS4 the primary one, play the same game and only have the one digital copy but without the 'Child' account, the boy (and his mates) would have pretty much free reign. Not ideal. Kov is bound to have scary digital content or games at some point that he won't want the kid playing. And you can't always trust the little fuckers, if I ever disconnected my two from the wifi to stop them playing, they'd just plug a wired connection in and carry on, bypassing all the parental controls on the router!

I may be thinking of the xbox 360 before they introduced the Family subscription - individual games and individual gold subs. PS4 Sub accounts never used to be upgradable, either. So we didn't last long without the kids wanting their own PSN+ accounts because there didn't seem much point if they had to get a whole new account and lose their trophies and progress etc. Mine are almost 19 and 16 now so these things were an issue 10 years ago.

For the family, do I need to create an email address for him?

Not sure - but I'd guess so, otherwise how would you be able to upgrade a child to a master or adult account once they're 18?

Have you tried setting up a child account to see if it asks for one?
