Yes, you have a lovely internet persona.

Heh. I mentioned the cost of my current car to troll Gaywood - it worked, by all accounts (he's about as difficult to read as that huge letter "A" that's at the top of eye test wall charts).
People have no issues trying to troll me, time and again, so tell me, why should I care about their sensibilities? It's okay to dish it out but not so good to (very mildly) receive in kind?

Nah. Sorry, the moral high ground's long gone my friend.
Dry your eyes mate.
Be lovely to see a pic of your new car, Cavey - salve mine and Grim...'s curiosity (and that of anyone else who wants to know). And for no other reason.

Mileage wise, I did about 12-13k last year. And I don't drive to work (well, maybe 10 times a year, 12m round trip, barely counts). Weekend mileage has really added up, but then my parents are 70 miles away, so that's 140 a month at least. And I toured a lot of the UK when the weather was good* in the summer. Visiting different parkruns is clearly something I now do more in the car than on the train/bike, too.

*'Better', anyway.
And Gazchap - do you dare allow yourself to spread those costs out over longer, taking into account owning a car outright? Maybe it makes little difference unless you own one for, I don't know, >5 years and reduce repayments to 0 or near, but it seems an obvious point of interest. Albeit conflicting, of course, with the urge to get another car.

The "2 year term" is just so that I can more easily compare between the lease costs of the LEAF.

Although yes, the likelihood of me owning a car for longer than 6 months if I buy it outright is slim to nothing.
I have done approx 84000 miles in 3.5 years.

New car time this year.
No, needs to be a lot less that that, current car is a Golf Mk7.. might be something similar, it is about the right size.

Insanely high spec Mitsubishi Bongo Friendee.
I really want a Vauxhall VXR8. It's basic inside, does about 14mpg and is a bloody Vauxhall, but that V8 engine though.

They're about £15k now.

Dat Q-car ness. There was a VXR8 that lived two streets over when we lived in Putney, used to walk the dog past it sometimes. I think they're quite handsome but then I always had a soft spot for Vauxhalls, as my own car ownership history shows.

I think even if I factor in insurance, MOTs and running costs, you've spent more on your pretend cars than I've ever spent on real ones. :D

It's basically a rebadged Holden HSV GTS which is what they base the V8 Supercars race car on.

I like old Vauxhalls like the Mk1 Astra and the Chevette, but they've been very uninspiring for a long time now. The VXR8 is very much a one-off.

I spent £4k-and-change on the balloon payment on the Skoda, and I drove less than a thousand miles in the last year, so dry your eyes, son.

Am I meant to be impressed by this vulgar display of wealth?

I hadn't really thought about recent cars, but you're right. I still love the styling of my old Calibra, but I'd be the first to admit it's as much about nostalgia as anything else. First car I owned (hell, only car, to date) with frameless door windows. Fuckin' boss.

Yeah, I have to say I do like the Calibra, even now. :)

Tell someone who gives a fuck, son.
I am determined to get myself a shark-nose BMW 840Ci at some point.

- Flip up headlights
- Frameless windows
- Pillarless doors
- Cool as fuck

What's not to like? ;)

£660 Rover
£60 battery
£95 exhaust
£20 plugs and HT leads
£284 insurance
£185 tax

6840 miles commute for year at 30mpg is £1159 of fuel.

£3,123 total for the year

Do you mean one of these (although this is an 850), there's one for sale locally, it's been in the showroom for years.

I think the price has gone up as well, sure it was over £20K last time I walked past. Truly an appreciating modern classic!

They are very cool but fuel consumption would be horrendous and big bills await too IMO.

Yep, that's the same sort of thing. 840 has marginally better fuel consumption and slightly less potential for financial destruction.

Sorry, I did know that - I was thinking just the model photo. But actually, the real thing would be much better. I'll imagine it (in very flattering style, though possibly brain will add a unicorn and rainbow to make it full-on idealised), if it never happens!

Mine is a white Fiesta. Even though it was finally cleaned recently, you definitely don't need a photo of that.

Nothing wrong with Fezzas, I've had two - an XR2i and a "cooking" one, a 1.4D Style :D (I killed the latter having done over 100,000 miles in it; it was the replacement to my awful Mondeo and was a cracking little car, handled brilliantly as well :) )

Quoted for when your 840 throws a conrod / needs an oil change which inexplicably involves removing the engine, transmission, and the passenger seat.

Other notable highlights include a 5l V8 producing 130 bhp and a kerb weight of two tons.

Ha! I hadn't even considered that without a lease (or equiv) payment, you'd own them for *less*! I was thinking - own for ages, cost comes down. All about knowing your own mentality!

I had two shitty 1.1l Poplar Plus versions, and one as a courtesy car just over a year ago, which I loved.

As I think I've said, if the Grimlet could fit comfortably in the back of a Fiesta I'd ditch the Focus off straight away.
My brother who has two children (who both need baby seats) bought a very practical 3 door Fiesta ST. With the money he saved by not buying a larger car he's had it remapped and a scorpion exhaust fitted.

I've never met a single car-bloke who didn't like Fiestas, or any good handling small car. They handle, they're fun (nothing more amusing than getting some little 1.1 Fezza on three wheels on a roundabout, taking out some snoozing Beemer or whatever :D ), they're great in the snow, they're economical, stupidly practical and to cap it all, hold their value amazingly well.

Great little motors. The ST is amazeballs.
I nearly leased an ST-3! Wasn't meant to be though. :(

It has its pros and cons. It's bigger and quicker, but more thirsty and a lot older. Also I've had to have quite a bit done to it already and it's still not entirely running how I want.

But it does celebrate its 15th birthday next month!
Every time I see an RX-8 on the road I think "I'd better buy one of them before there's no good ones left".

So tempting isn't it? I did think about them at the time of buying the CTR.

This was 5 fucking pages ago now just because Cavey wanted to show his dick off.

Anyway I just wanted to thank you for your advice and counsel, you seething ball of resentment and jealousy.

I hope I die now and you feel bad. Although that would be counter to your advice so it would be difficult to assign too much blame. BUT STILL.

Back to the racing day I think the tip about listening to the instructor is the most sensible thing that I won't do. I jumped out of a plane once and went "One thousand two..fucking hell I've just jumped out of a plane, should I panic and open my reserve chute? I'm going to die aren't I? No wait it's open. Awesome"

Like a sponge I am.
