I’m a huge fan of the Tick and loved the original cartoon series and even the short lived live action series. I’ve even got the toys from that series… so yeah, I like the Tick.

So I was a bit apprehensive when I heard about a reboot. I knew very little about it apart from the fact that Ben Edlund was writing it and Peter Serafinowicz was playing the Tick. A strange choice I thought. I know he can do the voice but does he look the part?

Well, I watched the first episode last night on Amazon and I can confirm that yes, he does fit the part. Brilliantly.

Like all reboots these days it’s gritty, dark and realistic. The characters seem to have to deal with consequences and all that normal everyday stuff but that’s ok. Arthur seems like a normal guy who’s dealing with a mental illness. He has a sister who helps him out but that’s all we know about him so far apart from the fact he is onto a conspiracy theory that the country is being run by a super villain. The Tick is loud, brash and all things the Tick should be. His invulnerability isn’t explained but it’s there and he’s even able to withstand bullets. I like how they still haven’t given him an origin story but he doesn’t need it. Just go with it.

The bad guy is The Terror but you only see a bit of him from a flash back to Arthurs early life. He seems old then so everyone presumes that he’s dead since Superion (a real super hero) said that he’d finished him off. Arthur is convinced he’s not so yeah, he’ll play a big part as the series carries on. He’s also played by Jackie Earle Hayley so I know he’ll be brilliant.

In closing… You should watch The Tick. I’m pretty sure you’ll like it.

I do have a feeling that we won’t see Chairface Chippendale in it though.

Yeah quite enjoyed it too. I like Serafinowicz but not at all familiar with the character of the Tick so just taking it on its own merits and also feeling slightly confused by some of it I thought it was good fun.

That's reassuring that someone who doesn't know the character was able to enjoy it. Hopefully everyone else will think the same and they'll make more episodes.

I have it queued up to watch on the phone on the way home. My four-year-old loves the cartoon so I'm keen to see how suitable/unsuitable this is for her.

On the Amazon Pilots thing, my wife approves of I Love Dick.

I enjoyed this! Totally unsuitable for my four-year-old. Partly the sweariness (she dropped the f and s bombs last week), but also the violence, which has the potential to be graphic, I think.
