If this is real, Nintendo have quite possibly lost their damned minds.

Looks like a smiley face. :)

My money says it is legit to an extent, but I don't know if it is the final controller design.

Might even be at Massive Entertainment (Ubisoft studio that made The Division).

Ubi studios have a habit of leaking Nintendo hardware details.

I would be worried about no buttons and I don't think any haptic solution is going to be good enough to replace physical buttons. Virtual buttons on a touchscreen are OK, but not when you are not looking at the screen.
User avatar
I'm not sure I could even hold that in any useful way.
User avatar
Looks like an elongated SNES controller to me. Got to be some sort of LCD screen in it though surely?
User avatar
WTF is that?!

Ha. Star point karma.
User avatar
Nintendo haven't let us (or the Pokemon fans at least) down in the past... I'm sure that whatever they have planned, will be brilliant.
User avatar
the buttons seem too far apart, the depth too narrow to be easy to hold; I have similar issues with the Vita.

Looks interesting though, especially the mouse wheels as the top buttons, you could have some fine control using those, which has ever been an argument of mouse vs controller.
User avatar
I kinda wish they'd stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

Personally, I'd have liked them to have further explored something with the Wiimote or further refined it instead of the Fisher Price WiiU controller we got. The WiiU controller was ok, I guess, but it just wasn't innovative like the Wiimote was.
User avatar
The wii-u was essentially a console sized ds/win hybrid. Not hard to see why they did that considering the success of the ds and mobile phones.
User avatar
But ignores the phenomenal success of the Wii due, in no small part, to the controller? That's hard to fathom.

Which is why the controllers were compatible with the Wii U, surely?

Indeed, hence the wii hybrid part. (even if Mr keyboard decided that I wanted to win instead)

I like how it says "Confidential Property" with nice sticker...

Nah, the phenomenal success of the Wii was in no small part due to stealing Zardozs stars.

Yeah, maybe they'll send me one for free by way of an apology.

It was a token gesture (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) to the previous users but still replaced the Wiimote with the touchscreen as the primary method of input and a reason to buy the console.
User avatar
This controller has now been revealed as a fake by the creator.

User avatar
It seems an unusual fake. It clearly exists, so it may not be Nintendo, but someone has made it.
User avatar
Confirmed fake apparently.

If I 'make' an object by nailing some Creme Eggs to a plank of wood and post pictures on the internet will you take that seriously as well? Because you're setting a hilariously low barrier to credibility here.
User avatar
I'd take the wanton destruction of creme eggs like that very seriously, yes.
User avatar
That is hardly the same, there is clearly a decent level of manufacture here, it hasn't just been thrown together or even 3d printed. Someone has gone to a fair level of effort for a fake, or out is something else.

In this day and age I don't think you can really claim anything isn't 3D printed or faked based on a couple of images. That Reddit thread is claiming that the entire thing is knocked up in 3D modelling software which, if true, massively undermines your 'clearly a decent level of manufacture' line. And even if not that someone could bang out a 3D printed thing with rough-ish edges then smooth it out in image processing to get something that looked well made. You don't even need to imagine a scenario where someone's purposely taking the piss, people will often make a render of their own concepts to show off or practise with modelling software and these things get snapped up as 'official' image for a while. Obviously it could well turn out to be a genuine device of some kind but assuming that based on what we've seen thus far is massively premature.
User avatar
You can't get that level of gloss on 3d printing, even post processing would require a serious level of effort. That said, I hadn't considered photo shop, and I don't know anything about that.
User avatar
Well you can stop arguing now because here's how it was actually made.

Looks like the guy did put a fair bit of effort into it.

Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen.

A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV.

For more on the console's power, Digital Foundry has a deep-dive look at the chip Nintendo has chosen as the centrepiece of NX, according to numerous well-placed sources: Nvidia's powerful Tegra mobile processor.

NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told us.

Considering NX's basis as a handheld first and foremost, the choice may not come as too much of a surprise - although we have heard the suggestion Nintendo recommends a 32GB cartridge, which is small when considering the size of many modern games.

Naturally, we expect digital game downloads will also be available. We were told Nintendo considered but then decided against making a system which supported digital downloads only.

1
NX will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra mobile processor.
It's not the first time cartridge-based media has been mooted for NX. Back in May, eagle-eyed fans spotted The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's trademark included cartridge-based games. This was a change from Nintendo's usual wording for home console trademarks, which only refer to digital downloads and discs.

Due to the radical change in hardware design and internal technology, we've been told by one source that there are no plans for backwards compatibility.

Another source said the system would run on a new operating system from Nintendo. It won't, contrary to some earlier rumours, simply run on Android.

Inside the NX, as stated above, the system will harness Nvidia's powerful mobile processor Tegra. Graphical comparisons with current consoles are difficult due to the vastly different nature of the device - but once again we've heard Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity. Quite the opposite, it is sacrificing power to ensure it can squeeze all of this technology into a handheld, something which also tallies with earlier reports.

Finally, we've heard from one source that NX planning has recently moved up a gear within Nintendo ahead of the console's unveiling, which is currently slated for September.

After the confused PR fiasco of the Wii U launch, the company is already settling on a simple marketing message for NX - of being able to take your games with you on the go.

All aboard the hype train! CHOO CHOO
User avatar
Basically what I expected apart from detachable controllers and having to plug the console into a base to use on TV.
User avatar
I don't like the sound of this at all.

I'd prefer a handheld that is specifically designed to be a handheld, and a home console specifically designed to be a home console.

Share architecture/library across both would make a lot of sense, but limiting a home console to roughly the same kind of power envelope/size/cost considerations that would apply to a handheld sounds like a terrible idea.

Of course this isn't official yet.

CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
User avatar
Surely mobile gaming devices have been pretty much supplanted by mobile phones. I dunno, seems a bit daft.
User avatar
Actually, what I expected was basically a Wii U (with carts instead of optical drive) that had everything built into the pad, and a small wireless receiver for the TV. So this news falls kind of short of that, really.

3DS has outsold the Wii U by something like 5:1.

Remember this reveal trailer? Watching it back I'm reminded that I've done a grand total of one thing with my WiiU that were shown in this trailer (namely use the screen to shoot when it was shoehorned into ZombiU but even then I didn't attach it to the bloody WiiCrapper).

Well! I think that seems like a clever design?
