DOOM

I got the super shotgun mastery thing that lets you fire it twice, click..click...boom...boom. Getting it was great fun as is trying to headshot fifty of them with the scoped assault rifle thing.
I am saving up the 6 points I need for the super shotgun's second upgrade right now.

When I found it (in a secret, and yes, I love that the guns appear a level or so earlier in secrets than they do in the main game) I did a whoop of delight which made MrsDoc roll her eyes at me.
I also talk to the demons. "C'mon over here big feller," I'll say, as I lure a Hell Knight out to open ground so I can circle strafe.

This game is so good.
Double-tap with the maxed super-shotty is horrendously powerful.

Argent cells... health and ammo. Ammo is very important as it increases your chainsaw fuel too. Armour is but health is way more important.
TheVision wrote:
What are the other 3? I started upgrading the plasma rifle last night based on this thread.

That's useful, but maybe not so much later game.

The ones I found the most useful were (in order from most useful) super shotgun upgrade path, chain gun turret, homing rocket cluster and zoom gauss gun. (the other gauss gun upgrade could arguably be more useful, but I didn't get on too well with it)

For the other weapons, I'd go for explodey shotgun, micro missiles on the assault rifle, the heat blast on the plasma rifle, and not wasting a single point on the shit pistol.

It's also worth noting that my play style is very much dancing up in enemies faces with the super shotgun, much as it was in the original Doom, so if you prefer to keep a distance... Super shotgun upgrade is less useful.

I'd be curious to hear people's thoughts on how best to spend Praetor points and Argent cells, too.

Argent:

Ammo, unless you start finding health an issue, in which case health.

Armour only really becomes useful late game

Pretoria stuff:
Other than the damage reduction and secret scanning , there's not really much in it, I seem to remember.
I found the SECRET place with SUPER SHOTGUN and did a :D face.

Feel like revisiting earlier levels with my new selection of boom booms now.
Aargh. I did a big fight, then later found the quad damage I'd missed, then realised that's where I was supposed to do the level's "kill 15 demons with quad damage" challenge. Suspect I will have to restart the level or lose my flawless record...

On the other hand, super shotgun now fully upgraded and I have my first mastery (plasma gun.) I'm also a good way through getting the upgrade for the Dazed and Confused rune (need kerb stomp glory kills; double jump makes those a lot easier.)
I like punching things.
So, I had a good play of this last night, and did the first three levels (on Hurt Me Plenty). For a while I thought it was slowing down when a baddy did certain things, but then I realised it was the auto-aim "sticking" me to the baddy a little, which took some getting used to (as did the fact that you can climb things).

It's certainly pretty, and runs at a fair old clip (although there is some tearing occasionally, it's nothing too bad).

It's just a bit... Tactical. When you enter a new area you have a quick scan around to spot possible resting places, health packs, bits you can climb etc., then you get a handle on what baddies are there with you and who you should prioritise first, and then you SPRINT UP TO THE NEAREST MOTHERFUCKER WHILE SHOOTING HIM IN THE GUT WITH YOUR PISTOL AND NAIL HIM WITH A GLORY KILL THEN GUT-SHOOT THE NEXT MOTHERFUCKER WITH YOUR PISTOL AND NAIL HIM WITH A GLORY KILL THEN GUT-SHOOT THE NEXT MOTHERFUCKER WITH YOUR PISTOL AND NAIL HIM WITH A GLORY KILL THEN GUT-SHOOT THE NEXT MOTHERFUCKER WITH YOUR PISTOL AND NAIL HIM WITH A GLORY KILL THEN THERE'S ONE BEHIND YOU SO YOU PUNCH HIM AROUND A BIT AND NAIL HIM WITH A GLORY KILL AND THEN YOU STAND, BLOOD RUNNING FROM YOUR GLOVES AND BOOTS, THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF YOUR HIDEOUS RAMPAGE AND IT'S FUCKING INCREDIBLE
I get the feeling Grim... doesn't like it.

Shame.
Then you get the berserk artifact and it just goes PUNCH SPLAT PUNCH SPLAT PUNCH SPLAT PUNCH SPLAT... and everything is dead. And you're laughing like a maniac.
Oh yeah, I did that too.

If I have one complaint the writing is a bit small. Oh, and I passed the "kill two baddies with one trigger pull of the shotgun" challenge by using an explosive shot, which - while it was the best kind of correct - felt a bit broken.
The fight with the Cyberdemon fucked me right off last night. Got through it in the end but fucking hell. Was such a relief to get back to exploding room fulls of the normal ones again. Hope there's not too many more fights like that.

There are 3 boss fights. All fairly similar. None are particularly hard.
Hard enough, my patience with games is paper thin these days.

There's not much margin for error on them is there? Especially the one that had you jumping after those green things. That was hard.

That happened to me about 4 times before I finally did it.

In other news, I've just picked up the BFG! Ace.

It got worse. I ACTUALLY PICKED IT UP and still failed.
I just got In-Flight Mobility on my third go. Didn't feel hard at all...?
The worst ones, to my mind (Excluding the rune I didn't find, because I have no idea how bad that one is) are the one which stops you moving (Because... in a game where movement is key, that's the thing you remove?) and the one about killing 8 monsters with the shit shotgun in a small amount of time with 1 health and some scraps of armour.
The stop-you-moving one was annoying, mostly because of the slow restarts.
I've only found one so far and did it first time. *blows smoke off imaginary gun barrel*
Doctor Glyndwr wrote:

I didn't mind this one too much and managed to do it on my 3rd go. It's all about being accurate with the gun which is something I'm not in the normal game.
Mr Dave wrote:

I nailed the armour one after only a few tries. I do seem to like the shotgun more than other folk, though.
I like the other shotgun fine. I prefer the super shotgun for obvious reasons, but I still use the less powerful one for explosive rounds to clear out groups of cannon fodder, or for when I need to whittle an enemy down for a glory kill.
Had a long, tough fight. Ended up with no armour, 1% health, and two cacodemons. Played hide-and-seek with the cacodemons and the gauss gun's scope mode, put them down, they dropped health (about 30%.) Two Barons of Hell immediately spawn right up close to me. Panicking, I took the first one down the the chainsaw, then swapped to the gauss gun's siege mode and somehow managed to nail the second with it without getting hurt as the gun spooled up.

Wow!

Also unlocked the get-armour-when-you-glory-kill rune, which seems to be most handy.
It will become handier.
Fine, you all win.

This had better be good!

(It'll be tomorrow before I play it though, download has just started now. £39.99 on Steam, can't be arsed trying to save a few quid from G2A or suchlike, there are a few horror stories out there about them.)

I found out something today. You don't actually need to be looking at the bad guy to do the death from above glory kill. As long as you're in mid air above them, it'll still trigger whatever direction you're looking in.
50GB download then. Still trundling along. That's almost GTAV big.

This had better have all the demons EVER in it likes.

Only 42% in, so clearly not even going to get a look at it tonight. (My downloads max out at 2.8MB/s.)
Fuck you, Cyberdemon!

It's not by EA so you'll hate it

They put the ladders back up!!!
The Rich Get Richer rune trial is annoying me.
But the effect is so useful.

I don't even remember the trial, so probably did it first time.
I had to give up on a rune trial last night. I had to kill 9 enemies with only the gauss gun and I only had 1 health point. It was very hard and getting late and I wanted to carry on with the game. Annoying.
So I am all downloaded and ready to go. I did just briefly fire it up to see what it looked like, at which point the demonic ructions from my PC attracted Hearthly Jnr's attention and she looked over at my screen to see me crush a demon's skull into a bloody pulp with my bare hands and then immediately have to kill several more shambling horrors. 'What's happening there daddy? What is that game?'

Probably one to play after she's gone to bed, then. IN ABOUT TWELVE HOURS. Grrrr.

The game certainly hits the ground running.

Kill 14 demons in 1:30 with the rocket launcher. I had to give up, although I may go back to it. It's the splash damage I'm having issues with.
Do you have the armour upgrade reducing self damage?

I never really found splash damage an issue.

edit: Do armour upgrades even work in challenges? Probably not.
Mr Dave wrote:

No. You get what you're given, which has no other runes.

I'm normally ok with it. I suspect my problem is the time limit, I'm going too fast so I take aggressive shots at critters too close to me.

I've pushed on with the game, anyway; I don't want to get hung up on it. Can always come back to it later.
