I've had a brilliant idea for a gift that's a custom LEGO set but the fuckers have discontinued the old "make your own kit" service. I might have to just design it by hand and buy the bricks one by one, but it still won't come with instructions. Boo.

Oh. Lego Universe (their MMO which also featured the build your own thing as you could have something you'd made in game sent to you as a kit) closed at about the same time. Having read the review it sounded like the storyline-type bit was great but once that was done it turned into a horrific grind to earn more bricks to start building your own place.

I think Lego is missing a trick: they should sell proper, accurate licensed models like that and make a killing - this is the nearest I've seen. I'd have loved them when I was a kid, it would have been near-enough the perfect toy for me. Instead I had most of the Micromachines trains:

Let me think of another similar example...
As a person who owns a decent amount of LEGO and has it all sorted and bagged etc: It takes a large amount of time to separate and inventory it all. If I were this company I'd just weigh it on a decent set of scales.
How the frig would you get the right pieces per kit by using scales?

Though, looking at the sets on offer, some of those have interesting bits that people would want to nab.
Maybe they have some form of conveyor belt/computer sorting?
Lego is made in various places around the world. Machines sort the bits into the boxes and check by weight.

I found the issue of the Lego club magazine where one of my models was included, earning me a gold master builders badge! Still can't find the framed version I had with the photo though.
Argos are doing there buy 2 get 1 free toys promotion again.
Just got two lego advent calenders (wooohoo!) and a lego motherfuckin' delorean for £59 all in.
So, yeah, still stupidly expensive, but oooooh yeah.
Also: This applies to the minifigure blind bags, which makes them 3 for £4 if, like me, you enjoy wasting your money on blues brothers, scientists, toybox robots and tiki men.
