Bit confused! My Dad appears to have installed something called System Care Antivirus which is plainly malware.

I'd locked down his PC so that he has a user account and no rights to install software (after previous problems) so I'm baffled as to how this beastie has managed to not only install itself but disable the anti-virus that is already installed without admin rights,

And does anyone know the best removal tool for PC's these days? I'm out of the loop as I now do my day to day work via the cult of Jobs.

Cheers.

Used Malware Bytes and some instructions I found online to clear it. Still don't understand how a user account that doesn't allow software installs without a password being requested can somehow install software and deactivate other bits of software.

Windows buggy and insecure? Looks like it.

Highly likely that it made use of a Java vulnerability, I would suspect. There's been loads of holes in the most recent batch of Java releases.

Removed 100% of all infected PC's over past 10 years with the above. Just add patience. :)

Willco! Spybot is a name that now comes back to me so I will install in the morning!

Cheers.

Also if he has windows 7 make sure to upgrade to ie10.

If he doesn't have windows 7 upgrade him to windows 7.

He's on Windows 7 and is banned from using IE due to previous problems. He uses Firefox instead.

since ie is still there even if the icon isn't, upgrade it regardless. It probably isn't the cause, but you never know.
