Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan (Shatner version) -Still remains an absolute epic of a film. So well put together in so many ways. And frequently looks vastly more cinematic than anything you get these days. I don't know what it is but it feels so much more like a proper cinematic experience than anything they do now. And they do it in under 2 hours as well! Brilliant.

It's still the only really properly good Star Trek feature film, IMO.

See, I totally agree with this statement. Star Trek VI started up on telly at the weekend and I watched about 20 mins before thinking about how I'd much rather be watching Wrath of Khan.

I still think Into Darkness is a superb film though! Albeit, it's more like an awesome rollercoaster of a movie than a cinematic space opera.

VI is a bit too TV movie-ish for my liking. Certainly the limited budget of the films after The Motion Picture didn't help in terms of presentation, but the plot is rather too farcical at times. Not a bad film though.

I always liked how 2, 3 and 4 are essentially a 3 act mega-movie and can be watched all in a row.

I've thought about it and re-thought about. Die Hard 5 is terrible. As a sequel it fails to capture the spirit of the Die Hard films in part or at all. As a regular film it barely slots together coherently and I'd imagine new comers would be at a loss why they're watching what they're watching or what was so special about the historical prequels. And when will they learn that Bruce doesn't need a spunky side kick: He's well proven to be able to star in a film by himself.

Lastly, I thought the choice of side kick was indicative of where films are at the moment. At least Shilalalalalalalalalalabuffythevampireslayer had personality whereas there's a large body of stuff about where the sexy star is just some brooding automaton with no redeemable features or screen presence.

God's tits, the end of Argo was fucking tense!

I pretty much pinched a new button onto the sofa cushion. Anyone that hasn't seen it yet is well advised to do so.

In the film, the diplomats face suspicious glances from Iranians whenever they go out in public, and appear close to being caught at many steps along the way to their freedom. In reality, the diplomats never appeared to be in imminent danger:
In the film, while pretending to scout for filming locations at a bazaar, the crew face suspicious glances, and are accosted by a few vendors, who suspect them of being American. In reality, this scouting trip never happened.
In the film, the crew again encounters suspicion while purchasing plane tickets to Zurich [while at the Tehran check in waiting for confirmation of bookings for the group ; in reality Taylor's wife bought three sets of plane tickets from three different airlines ahead of time, without any issues.
The film depicts a dramatic last-minute cancellation of the mission by the Carter administration and a bureaucratic crisis in which Mendez declares he will proceed with the mission. Carter delayed authorization by only 30 minutes, and that was before Mendez had left Europe for Iran.
In the film, there is again a tense situation when the crew tries to board the plane, and their identities are nearly discovered. In reality, there was no confrontation with security officials at the departure gate.
In the film, before the plane takes off, gun-toting Iranian guards try to stop the plane in a dramatic chase sequence; in reality, there was no runway chase at the airport. As Mark Lijek described it, "Fortunately for us, there were very few Revolutionary Guards about. It's why we turned up for a flight at 5.30 in the morning; even they weren't zealous enough to be there that early. The truth is the immigration officers barely looked at us and we were processed out in the regular way. We got on the flight to Zurich and then we were taken to the US ambassador's residence in Berne. It was that straightforward."

Typical Hollywood nonsense.

I really enjoyed Argo, then quite hated it after reading about the way it portrayed people who had shown great courage as cowardly.

I understand dramatic license but that just takes the piss.

No, I just found it to be pretty objectionable and a shoddy way to treat people. I thought that the filmmakers displayed fairly callous indifference and it especially annoyed me when I read up about it.

Also even ignoring all that stuff, it was massively overrated, I thought it was ok but felt genuinely confused about all the awards nominations it received.

I try to avoid knowing anything about the films I watch (quite easy if you don't read entertainment websites or watch TV), so I didn't have any issues like that.

I liked it.

I reckon the Academy just likes Affleck for some reason. Maybe he has pictures of them in a compromising position. All 5,783* of them.

Well, if they shot the airport scene as it happened it would be pretty dull, wouldn't it?

I agree with Grim, the ending was very very tense, as was the early scene with the protesters invading the US embassy. Brilliant directing there.

If i had to choose, i would prefer if Django had won the oscar, but as i knew that would be impossible, Argo was very worth of it.

Are they related in any way other than title though? I've not seen the original, but I gathered they were very deliberately not similar.

There's nothing that ties the movies together except for Franco Nero's cameo and Tarantino used some of the music. You should watch the original!

I watched Django recently and loved it!

Has anyone else seen The Great Gatsby yet? I would happily go and see it again. Might go and see Hangover 3 though just so I can see a bit of Vegas and get excited.

Aye, I saw Gatsby before my holiday. It looked amazing at times, and cheap and nasty at others. Any time he shot natural scenes, I was quite taken with the beauty. When CGI got involved, it got cheesy all too often. Very nouveau-riche in style, which is a nice bit of meta-textuality given the theme of the film, but I'm not convinced that was the intention.

I haven't read the book, but in the film, too many of the characters were merely plot devices. Your main dude, Gatsby and the polo player were characters. Daisy isn't filled out enough, either to be 'wow, she's amazing!', or 'she's too self absorbed to be worth such obsession'. And the golf player was way too hot to have such a small role!

I liked it, wanted to love it, but it was too blatantly an extended Jay-Z video.

Yup, watched Gatsby during the week, without having read the book or being familiar with the story. I thought the film was spectacular, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Odd moment in the cinema, which was packed - in the couple of seconds gap between the closing scene and the end credits music, it was *completely silent*, nobody rushing to get up. Nice one Baz.

I also couldn't make my mind up about Daisy while watching it, she did seem a bit superficial. But I suppose the point is that Gatsby's obsession is based on an idealised memory and fantasy.
He is, let's face it, a psycho waiting to happen...

That was my issue, though. She wasn't even a character. Had she been self absorbed and whatnot, that'd have been a great illustration of Gatsby's delusion. As it was, she could have been awesome, we just weren't told enough about her by the film.

But yeah, I was wondering if she had been a character in the book. That said, a film should stand on its own merits, so my awesome criticism stands. :munkeh:

Going to see Fast and Furious 6 in a bit. They showed the trailer before Star Trek and we were both agreed that it promised to be just about the stupidest film that's ever been made. I've not seen the last four films but I don't suppose this will matter too much.

I've seen two more films recently:
Parker - Jason Statham is a robber, and his gang double-crosses him. He goes to get them back. Watchable, but ho-hum. JLo is pretty. One star (but no JLo stars, sadly).
Side Effects - Jude Law is a psychiatrist treating a depressed woman. Starts off slow, ends well - surprisingly good and well worth a watch. One star.

I'm currently about 30 minutes into Warm Bodies, which is about a Zombie that falls in love. It's, er, strange. But it's had some funny bits. No stars yet.

Parker is a terrible, terrible Jason Statham movie where Jason Statham plays his usual Jason Statham character. The best thing you could possibly say about this is if you like movies where Jason Statham plays his usual Jason Statham character then you'll love this Jason Statham playing his usual Jason Statham character film where Jason Statham plays his usual Jason Statham character.

Nope - I do like Jason Statham playing his usual Jason Statham character, but this wasn't as good as the others.

Obviously it really needs to be Crank 3.

But! You should still watch it, because the detective from The Wire is in it, and you owe him because he helped to make The Wire.

But! You should still watch it, because the detective from The Wire is in it

Also Michael Chiklis from The Shield. Which reminds me that, amusingly, his first big success was in a role where he looked like this:

I saw F&F6 today. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about as plausible as something really not very plausible but it is entertaining.

The Rock & Vin Diesel make a brilliant tag team. The Rock always oozes charisma.

Man of steel, then.

Cheesy, badly paced, some horrific one liners, an emotionless Russell Crowe, some brilliant visuals and not a hint of sexiness from Amy Adams...

5/10

Just saw the new Star Trek at the cinema.

Other than pointless 3D and ridiculous overuse of lens flare, it was brilliant.

Watched f&f6, as a fan of the series was thoroughly disappointed by lack of emotional attachment to the cars, lack of technical car stuff :nerd: and lack of realistic driving prowess. Which is what I watch these films for so :( .

watched expendables 2, LLOL. Worth it :D
