After 162 miles since Friday (30, 70, 62) my biggest problem is the sunburn. Ouch.

I would suggest that a bigger problem is the fact that you're up at 6.43am.

and now the new disk has died on OSX, time machine backup failed and it won't even mount anymore...

That'll be why the PS3 still seems to be fucked even though I swapped the disk I suspect! :D

Apparently, three wedding dresses is acceptable, but a new bike is not. I get confused by these rules.

I forget where it was, but it was somewhere around Mile 50, that magical mark where You think "I've ridden half a century" ,but before The Madness sets in, and We turned up through a small village, somewhere in the Vale of York. North of York, South of Thirsk, but near of the A1. We actually did turn up, as there was a hill which led to a ramp which led to a bridge crossing the A1. I had noticed Him for about 5 minutes. Him was riding a mountain bike, with wide bars and suspension forks. Him had been creeping up on Us and was now behind Me. Him was being pulled along by the effort We were putting in to ascend, descend and move through this countryside. Him had caught up with us as We'd slowed slightly to have a brief chinwag about something, or to appraise the current state of our respective cardiac systems. We noticed him, sitting silently in the lower pressure air behind us, enjoying his free ride. We upped the pace back to the accetpable speed for the terrain, and left Him behind, to contemplate his misdemeanours. Later on, whislt sitting around the fire, We were discussing the sights, smells and scenes that We had experienced on this light ride, and told of Him. We told of the unspoken decision, the complete lack of any communication that led to upping the pace, because We know Right from Wrong.

New dentist. And a good one!

I'd always assumed NHS dentists crammed you into the waiting room like battery hens, saw you 40 minutes late and then manhandled you during treatment while trying to inflict as much pain as possible. But no! My new dentist was quite superb!

So if you have a shit dentist, shop around!

Neat!

Is there any way to get rid of the cropped bits at the top and bottom?

There's no way to edit them at all (that I'm aware of) and you're seeing them there just as I took them as far as I know. That said, Sphereshare is a third party site so it's possible Google themselves would display them better; apparently you can view them via the Google+ website as well but I've never checked them on there and I can't access the site from here at work. I can try sharing it with you on G+ to see if that does a better job?

See, if there's one thing I would change about the NHS, dentistry and the rest, it would be the ability to 'shop around' much more freely than we can now. If there's one appealing feature about healthcare in Germany is that (within reason and limitations) people turn up anywhere their electronic health cards and get an appointment directly with specialists and so on. That doesn't mean I want their expensive insurance system, mind, but having a bit more freedom would be a help.

I go to a private dentist who, somewhat reluctantly takes on NHS clients from time to time. He's excellent, if a little condescending :)

There are about seven dentists in my area that take NHS patients and, as far as I'm aware, I could switch from one to another whenever I wanted as Mrs B did exactly that not so long ago.

I think it is the duty of the PCT to sort you out with an NHS dentist, you know. I dont think I have a dentist up here.

I am so happy that I resisted buying an iPad all this time and waited for a decent windows tablet. Surface runs a little hot but I'm already seeing huge productivity benefits at work.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of stuff is it you do that you're more efficient on with the Surface? A touch screen is arguably 'nicer' to use but I can't think of anything that would actually be faster for me to do with a touch screen versus keyboard+mouse so I'm just curious how it's making you more productive.

I imagine the Surface is like my phone, only bigger.. which I love so I think I'd like it.

Which reminds me, I played with Windows 8 the other day and I kind of liked it.

Two main aspects. One is that any work related device I use needs to be full windows due to restrictions on our remote access and the intransigence of IT. Running my current W7 laptop is fine, but it is a home use only.

Add to that the digital ink of surface, I'm seeing that when I'm back at work next week, I'll be virtually wholly paperless using onenote/Evernote for all meeting and ad hoc notes. I've a phenomenal amount of paper on and around my desk and office which is badly filed, labelled and followed up. Digitising that (I can't very well bang out notes on a laptop in meetings) could go a very long way on those stakes. Handwriting recognition is incredible.

Ultimately, it didn't need to be a surface. But it did need to be win 8, ( not RT) and the premium was worth paying IMO. Also weighed up that surface 2 will be announced most likely next month, but possibly on a 6 month timeframe.

Ah, I genuinely hadn't thought about the stylus and handwriting stuff as it's not something I ever use (ironically given my fevered adoption of the Note and the Note 2).
