Love the interior elevator photo, Bobby, and the tower balcony. Good stuff.

Taken in a somewhat less glamorous location...

A family remember Ianto Jones, heroically killed in the 456 Invasion.

(Don't actually like Torchwood that much, but the Cardiff memorial is just too cool for words.)

She played a little lunchtime gig at the library today. She was rather good, and pretty purdy too.

I'm not sure myself but the changes don't seem to have been very well received on their forum thing:

I'm not sure what their argument is - unless they don't like the redesign. I'm not that fond of it yet, I must confess.

I'm not that fond of it yet either. I appreciate the larger pictures, that's nice. And the better justified tile layout is good too. However, I can no longer at a glance see recent comments on my pictures alone when I click home. I've to do a lot of tedious scrolling and scanning as it just lumps every single update in date order without the prior prioritising. Also, the geo-tagging map is no longer easily accessible. I miss being able to see at a glance where something was taken.

I think there's ironically too much clutter in this new view. They've sort of simplified the look but now you've got big blocks of black and white and a photo, instead of just pure white and a photo - or pure black and a big photo once you've hit L. It's a bit of a mess to be honest and needs way more refining.

I'll see if I get used to it over the coming weeks, but I'm not currently warming to this to be honest.

I think the extreme reaction is born of a mix of things:

1: Complete lack of consultation or warning.

2: New Flickr ruler Marissa Mayer's edict:

"…there’s no such thing as Flickr Pro, because today, with cameras as pervasive as they are, there is no such thing really as professional photographers, when there’s everything is professional photographers. Certainly there is varying levels of skills, but we didn’t want to have a Flickr Pro anymore, we wanted everyone to have professional quality photos, space, and sharing.”

Which is akin to saying that because everyone makes food there aren't any chefs anymore.

3: Flickr for the dedicated was as much about the community and the commenting. This has been sidelined in the new change and it is now oddly more difficult to Flickr-Mail people.

4: For those of us who prefer a more curatorial air for their photos the new Flickr format doesn't give them any space to breathe.

5: Flickr should be about the photograph and the photographer. That's what I'm paying my money for. Now Flickr appears to be more about making Yahoo a big noise. PDNPulse has a worrying article here:

Quote:
« PreviousForget Tumblr: Yahoo! Has Big Plans for Flickr
Like most of the media world, I assumed yesterday’s Yahoo! press event in New York City’s Times Square would be about the company’s purchase of the blogging site Tumblr. Imagine my surprise when it was actually an announcement about the redesign of the photo-sharing site Flickr, which Yahoo! purchased in 2005. In hindsight, the event’s decor should’ve given it away:

© Meghan Ahearn
After New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg finished speaking, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer got down to business, announcing that one of her goals has been to make Flickr “awesome again.” Yahoo! SVP of mobile and emerging products Adam Cahan took over to highlight the three changes Yahoo! has made: offering one terabyte of free storage for every user; launching a new Flickr user interface that focuses on the photos; and launching a new user interface for Android-powered devices (Flickr already relaunched new UIs for iOS and PC systems).

In a world where things are usually discussed in megabytes and gigabytes, a terabyte is unique—and Cahan said as much. He equated that amount of storage to uploading over 500,000 photos at full resolution (which is how all Flickr photos will now be displayed). But it got me thinking: If everyone gets a free terabyte, what do Flickr Pro users get? The answer is: Nothing—because Flickr Pro accounts don’t exist anymore. Previously, Flickr Pro users paid for a number of special features, including unlimited photo and video uploads. The free terabyte does away with the need to purchase more storage, and the other perks are folded into the regular accounts.

So how does Flickr plan on making money? A little digging around on the site showed there are three account options for users to choose from: Free; Ad Free at $49.99 per year, which offers the same services as Free but without the ads; and Doublr at $499.99 per year, which is the same as Ad Free except users get two terabytes of storage. This suggests the plan is to make money by selling advertising, which is already being displayed on the Flickr site.

At the press event, Flickr’s Head of Product Markus Spiering went over some of the site’s new features including the revamped photo stream, improved slide show functionality and the new background color for the images (black). He seemed most focused on the new social aspects of Flickr, highlighting how easy it is to share Flickr images on various social-networking sites, and encouraging brands and institutions to create Flickr accounts. Is the ultimate goal to make Flickr some kind of hybrid between Facebook and Tumblr? It certainly seems that way, especially with functionality like People in Photos, which allows users to tag friends and family in their photos.

A day later, now that everyone’s had a chance to poke around the site, the new user interface appears to be what Flickr users have the most beef with. Cahan and Mayer touted the fact that the redesign does away with the negative white space, text boxes and blue links, and displays all images at their full resolution. After we posted the redesign news on Twitter and Facebook last night, a couple of PDN’s followers commented that they didn’t like the new interface. Those comments pale in comparison to the pages and pages of comments on the Flickr help page, which complain about everything from the new background color to the images being displayed at such a large size, it’s hard to navigate the site.

But complaining goes hand-in-hand with redesigns. I’m more curious to see what Yahoo!’s next step is because it’s almost as if they’ve just realized they have a treasure trove of imagery at their fingertips. Take for instance, the new Yahoo! Weather mobile app. The background of the app displays a Flickr image that matches the app user’s location, time of day and current weather condition. So, for example, if you access the Yahoo! Weather app in Brooklyn, New York, on a rainy morning, the image displayed will show you a photo of a rainy New York City morning, previously taken by a Flickr user. To help populate the app with images, Flickr created Project Weather, asking users to submit their own images to be displayed on the app.

I have a feeling this is just the beginning of seeing Flickr images everywhere you see the purple Yahoo! logo.

You're here to serve me Flickr, not the other way round.

I am actually beginning to consider deleting my account at the end of my term and finding some place else. Something which I find slightly heartbreaking after a good long while as part of their community. I can't see this as anything other than something of a PR disaster too.

Internally, Flickr-mail was considered one of their biggest mistakes. It hardly ever got used (by users, that is - the system used it all the time) and there was simply no reason to have it - people have email addresses, after all, and there was no need to write a layer on top of that.

Obviously, right back in the day, Flickr was primarily about communication - it was a live chat client that you could add photos to - so the PM system makes sense, but it's changed hugely since then.

The few complaints will be buried quite nicely by the masses of free space, I'd imagine.

I found the FlickrMail to be useful. Handy way of seperating my photogging email from my regular. Bah.

And yeah, but how much free space does the average person need? For archiving and businesses and those with a lot of video uploads it's pretty handy (and most of those would be PRO accounts) but for everyone else one terrabyte is meaningless. I've calculated that my 650 photos barely cover 4 gigs. If I were to upload every photo I've shot I'd still only meet 60gigs in JPEG. I'm not begrudging massive spoonfuls of space for all (even if it does cost me my previous unlimited space, leaving me essentially paying for a no-ads-please) but the direction this business model takes is rapidly pegging it away from the needs of the consumer photographer towards a hideous Facebook type ad-driven model. And that's not what I or a lot of Flickr users want.

There's also been a marked level of simple transparency from Flickr with this new iteration. The updates I've been given have been worded in a matey "Awesome! SPECTACLR!" (Frankly, I hate them enough for the deliberate mangling of the English language there) style hustle that glosses over the fact that this could only be viewed as a contentious move.

And damnitt, what happened to my 'Pro' badge? I'm not a pro myself, and probably never will be, but damnitt, it was cute having that and everyone who had it felt like they were contributing. A minor thing, but y'know, it's the little things.

There's an article here from someone connected with the old Flickr bemoaning the changes. I reckon he's got a point. http://www.techhive.com/article/2039414 ... o-ads.html

This is all early-reaction passion from me, so I'll either settle down or boil up some more. Not sure which yet. But - and don't laugh at me here as I never bothered following news about Yahoo's hi-jinks before - but this move by them has made me distinctly uncomfortable. Almost as if they don't have my best photography interests at heart. Hmmm.

Yeah I think they would be making a huge mistake if they piss off those members who are most passionate about photography. There's any number of free dumping grounds for iPhone pictures of cats and kids and it'll end up as just another of those if they aren't careful.

Wowzers just seen all this shit. I stopped the 'Pro' auto sub last week as I don't use it half as much as I used to, so when the notice email came through I decided to stop.

I didn't renew my Pro sub when it came up for renewal, er, maybe two years ago. I just wasn't taking that many photos any more and the people I used to chat with had mostly become pretty inactive as well. It was fun right at the beginning, but like most trendy stuff on the net, people move on to something newer and trendy after a while.

Also, I've never liked the term 'Pro' in relation to accounts or software of any kind. All it really meant to me was 'Pay more (or pay SOMETHING) and we'll give you more features.' Paying for a Pro account is as meaningful as having bought a degree from Belmington University. Unless you really need the extra features, of course.

Like the Foghorn DavPaz. Nice colours, plus I've always loved the things in and of themselves. Cracking one on Flat Holm Island here in Cardiff.

Both taken with my new 18-300mm Nikkor lens, with vibration reduction. Ain't that some amazing shit? I can't believe how much of a difference it makes when you're zoomed in.

Don't forget one of Pete's golden rules - you should be trying to get a shutter speed of 1.5x focal length to get a properly sharp image. So at the long end of that lens that means you're trying to get 1/450s which isn't easy unless you're in bright sunlight. That's why the VR is so helpful.

I've never had the luck to experience vibration reduction. (Cue your mother joke, or something.) Nice black and white tones though, Gazchap. Love those cobbles.

I haven't posted a picture in this thread in ages, but we have not long returned from a trip to the SeaLife Centre and I took some pictures whilst I was there.

I think this one may be my favourite. It's a Parrot Feesh.

Beautiful, great picture too. I've never yet managed to get a decent shot through aquarium glass.

We had a couple of days up in the Lakes, took a boat out early in the morning, it was gorgeous:

I've only had the camera a couple of days and it's the first chance I've really had to use it, so there's a lot of experimentation to be had.

The bottom shot of yours is especially ace. The halo cast by the light around your head is beautiful. Looks like a lovely morning.

MrsG took that one. She was pretty chuffed with it. I can take no credit at all, in fact I was telling her to try standing the other side as it might just be a silhouette. :D

Yeah, that last one's a great shot in particular :) Would work well as an album cover if you ever wanted to go into music, too ;)

Here's one from last night, went out for a random drive and found a pretty cool little church in a nearby village. Not many angles available that weren't ruined by lamposts and things, but quite like this one:

I love your parrot fish one Mimi, if I had taken a picture like that it would for sure be going up on the wall somewhere.

Mimi! That parrot fish is gorgeous! Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Lovely colours.

MarkG, a fine crop of top photos there, but I love the back-lit profile portrait especially. Lovely light. Good attention to detail on the coiled rope too, and some lush reflections as well! And Gazchap, nice black and white - the Beex standard just keeps a-going up!

Probably to be associated with a blog post in a bit:

Awesome. Did you light paint that? How did you get the lighting so moody? :)

Maybe I'll reveal all in a step by step Lightroom lesson blog post! ;)

But the base line does involve taking the shot early evening-time when that light's beginning to get magical.
