Announced last night at the VGA's

http://www.inquisitr.com/429012/2012-vg ... announced/

Quote:
As if the original Dark Souls didn’t already put gamers in enough pain, during the 2012 Spike VGAs it was announced that Namco Bandai is working on Dark Souls 2, the next go-to game to fulfill all of your masochistic desires.

Unlike that other big trailer shown off during the VGAs, the Dark Souls 2 trailer was not in-game footage. Instead, we were treated to a fairly lengthy–and rather pretty–cinematic trailer.

The trailer starts off showing a character–presumably Dark Souls 2‘s protagonist–dressed in full armor as he carefully makes his way through a forest. A forest full of things that want to kill him, we imagine.

“You are the undead,” a menacing narrator says during the cinematic trailer as we’re shown scenes of some kind of fortress, and a cave. “Forever without hope, forever without light.”

Afterwards, we’re shown scenes of a fallen dragon who, as it turns out, is not quite fallen. The protagonist is also seen fighting a masked figure, who gets the receiving end of the protagonist’s sword planted right through his head.

Sadly, we don’t know anything more about Dark Souls 2. The debut trailer didn’t show us any in-engine gameplay, and the trailer didn’t say whether or not Dark Souls 2 is coming to any current-generation consoles, or if it will be for Microsoft and Sony’s as-yet unannounced next-gen hardware.

Should Namco Bandai share any information in the coming days, we’ll be sure to let you know. For now, go ahead and watch the Dark Souls 2 cinematic trailer from the 2012 Spike VGAs below.

So I have Demons Souls and Dark Souls. Shall I do them in order, or just go straight into Dark?

I would say that Dark Souls is the better of the two, some disagree. In terms of plot, there's no carry over, so you don't need to worry about spoilers.

Do I need the online functionality?

I imagine it as a Castlevania-esque thing.

Multiplayer is a big part of the game, I think. You really need to team up with people against the bosses, or it will be ridiculously frustrating. It's also fantastic fun to help others defeat the bosses, win your body that way, and then be able to summon people to help yourself. Main problem is that people are a bit thick and spend too much time invading instead of offering themselves up for summoning, or they won't summon when they should, so you wait around for too long to be summoned. This bit works better in Dark Souls somehow.

I do think Demons Souls is the better game in many other ways. But maybe that's just because I'm stuck in Dark Souls and finding it hard to get back into it. I managed to finish Demons Souls and although it is tough in the beginning, once you "figure it out" it is just an awesome game. Few survival horror games have had me as scared as this game.

Pro-tip 1 for Demons Souls: Don't be afraid to use healing herbs. You'll find plenty. Don't try to scrape through with low HP, if you have the herbs it is better to play it safe.

Pro-tip 2: Don't think you have to do worlds/levels in any particular order. If one seems way too tough, just try another. If a boss seems insurmountable, go play another area for a while.

Edit: Another important tip: Don't think you have to be in body form all the time. It is really meant only for boss battles. This, along with taking proper advantage of summoning, I didn't really understand until later in the game. It is much better when you realise this early.

On the other hand, I played it entirely offline, partly as going online makes setting world tendency somewhat tricky and partly as I didn't want to be invaded and didn't really want any help beating the game.

I ignored the world tendency stuff altogether, I must admit. Didn't really seem worth the effort.

That's the thing, if you try to be in body form all the time, then you get invaded, killed, and frustrated. Just stay in soul form until you need to summon someone, and let yourself be summoned and help kill a boss to obtain your body when the need arises, I think that's really key to enjoying the game the way it was intended - although they did leave it quite open to interpretation by the players, which is what makes it such a marvellous experience, in a way. You learn the hard way that cooperation is better for everyone in the long run.

Killing an invader feels great, that is for sure. Especially if you can do it by pushing them off a cliff or something like that, that you just know is going to have them gnashing teeth.

And simply choosing to be evil and invading, just because, has it's own attraction. My point was simply that the online part doesn't need to be frustrating and can greatly help you enjoy the game if you use it properly.

The thing that Dark Souls has over Demon's Souls is the weight carry limit. In Dark you can carry a million bits of stuff but your weight limit is determined only by what you're wearing or holding. In Demon's everything in your backpack counts towards your weight limit and is irritating after you've experienced Dark.

I do like the World Tendancy stuff though since brand new areas open up and new peeps arrive. It fecking hard to get right though. I think I only found the area right at the beginning of the game. On the left. Just off the bridge. Good down there.

Oh and that guy in the hanging cage in that area suspended miles above the swamp. Freaky scary around there. Wasn't there a bit when a load of flesh fell out the roof?

Bloody awesome game Demon's was.

But then, so was Dark.

Natch.

Did I mention I'd finished them both without any help by summoning guys? I did y'know. I'm awesome. Although I've got weird patches of hair on my back. It's started on the top of my right arm too. Maybe I should wax it off..,

That happened to me, but I didn't know why. If I'd known, I could probably have gone back to the start and entered the closed off area. World tendency sucks.

It is a wee bit spoilery and features a softly spoken man who you can bearly hear over the background noise much of the time.

Ok, I caved and I've watched it. It wasn't too spoilery and it wasn't 12 minutes of rolling gameplay (thank god).

IT LOOKS AWESOMEZ!

I liked the new bonfire effect when you light a bonfire.
It looked like you could duel wield swords like Demon's Souls.
I loved the troll with the giant axe. "Check me out as I deflect these...urgh. Dead"
I see the pimp cup has gone and is replaced by the stone of healing. Or was it stones? That might suggest a return to Demon's style healing.
Did you notice there was no soul gauge in the top left? It looked like a sun/moon clock thing.
The chariot boss looked the business.
It fact it all looked very sparkly and lovely and awesome and I want it now.

I'm not watching anything about this. I'm just buying it.

The last time I was so committed to an unreleased game it turned into PoP: Warrior Within (sob, sob), which haunts me to this day. But fuck it, I'm doing it again.

Knowing fuck all of what lay in front of me in Dark Souls was half the joy, but fuck me I'm tempted to click those links....
