Smith's off at the end of the anniversary episodes. Hs contract is up next November and the producers want a regeneration for the anniversary. Subject to change but that's where it's at at the moment. Source: Medium rank show staff.

Probably because he doesn't want to get typecast, same reason anyone would leave. Plus regenerations rejuvenate viewing figures. They need to turn a profit on a very expensive anniversary year.

The turnover of Doctors is a lot higher these days, eh? Three or four seasons and you're off then. Pity really but this is a new era I suppose so new styles...

He was umming and ahhing about being away from the stage and home and his agent said, "Look Patrick, everyone in the industry is talking about it being cancelled after a season anyway. You might as well sign up and get a bit of money in your pocket, it'll only be for a year."

The big worry is obviously that they make a wrong choice , I've liked all the recent Doctors and think Smith is great in the role and its more a question of who can they get to do something new.

Then realise that apart from Tom Baker most Doctors have been around for 3 years or so (remember that David Tennant had that odd 'specials' season rather than a full one) so having Smith leave at the end of 2013 fits in ?

That was a line in The Deadly Assassin and probably written without realising the ramifications. Still, it's sci-fi, so there'd be all number of get-out clauses, not least the possibility that the restriction was imposed by the Time Lords themselves, who no longer exist, bar the Doctor (and perhaps the odd renegade knocking about). Also, River Song's transfer could have boosted his number somehow.

As for Smith, it's understandable he'll leave, from from his standpoint and that of the production, but I'll be sad to see him—and presumably Moffatt also—go. This Who hasn't been to everyone's tastes, and most episodes have been too compressed and could have done with more room to breathe, but it's been interesting, thoughtful and largely coherent in the way the RTD stuff usually wasn't. (And from what I hear, kids have been happy—and regularly scared of the monsters—throughout, which is the main thing.)

The trend has been to get a younger doctor each time.

They need to reverse this.

I propose a single series with an older doctor.

There were limits in the 'classic' series but also ways around it (in the 5 Doctors the Master was offered a new set of regenerations for helping out) , and in The Sarah Jane chronicles it was given as a throwaway line that he didnt have a limit (or had a limit of hundreds)

Interestingly apart from a story with Peter Davison where they have to use up his remaining regenerations to allow some immortal people to die I dont think they have really used the 'limit' as a plot / story device.

Yes. The Deadly Assassin, Mawdryn Undead and the start of the 1996 telemovie all refer to this.

There's also references in Trial Of A Timelord where the Valeyard is a version of the Doctor between is 12th and final regeneration.

And in the 5 Doctors The Master is offered a new set of regenerations because he has used up all 12.

It's a bit more than idle speculation from where I'm stood, in that this is what staff on the show say is recent intent. Problem is they might not do it and I can't prove it anyway, but my special mystery source is well placed and disinclined towards gossiping about speculation and rumour. I need to find out when the preview premier showing is and ask again after that, when there may be more to hear. As for the news itself, I'm philosophical about it, if it's true. Good innings, and all that.

/edit Just seen a photo of contact with Peter Jackson. Assume premier was yesterday, then.

The villain felt a bit uneventful but most of the character stuff was pretty good and I like new companion girl. I just hope she remains interesting unlike Amy Pond who just ended up a bit shouty/pouty.

Disappointing Vastra usage. Why on earth does she bother carrying that sword on her back if as soon as she gets it out she gets pushed to one side so easily? I feel she was underwritten, there's so much more potential there so I also echo the Vastra/Jenny/Strax spin off. And that Strax is really funny. Made me laugh many times. The worm jokes were very silly but worked very well.

Overall good fun but possibly a bit anticlimactic somehow. Still shows a lot of promise for the coming season. Even though I would much much prefer there not to be a big bad in the series.

Just watched it again, 'cos I still want to feel all Christmassy and whatnot. Still loved it, and sure to watch it again before the holidays are over.

The new assistant seems well smart and capable, and not annoying and whiny like bloody Amy.

You don't need three main people and two's fine. Also, don't let the new girl fall in love with the Doctor. Rose was great back in the day, but I don't want it to get like a love story again.

Doctor Who is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013.

In addition to the monthly stories, television specials are also planned to mark the event.

Speaking of which I'm glad they used a frame cap from the McCoy title sequence on the stamps. I just love that sequence because it was so good at the time and hideously expensive (that is if they had paid full whack, they got a huge discount because the CGI people were so pleased to be working on Who and would also use it as their showreel).

I think he was trying to make a joke about how no-one sends letters therefore stamps are fairly anachronistic
