We don't have a thread on this. Anyone excited/interested at all? Apparently it's available for pre-order now - I think I'll just pick up a physical copy on or after release day.

Any WoWers planning on making a switch? Or at least trying it out? I've avoided media on it so far, but I've just been having a little look on the Wikipedia page and it seems interesting. It's by BioWare after all.

Yeah sorry - it's a PC-only MMORPG. It seems to be Knights of the Old Republic in MMO form. Think Star Wars World of Warcraft. Or something.

The space combat is on rails. That's bollocks.

They really just needed to combine Galaxies with Xwing.

They did? They added an ability to get in ships, customise them, fly around and have proper space combat and do piracy and that, and then land on planets and walk around hitting people with wookies?

Kovacs- I have all of them - Xwing, Tie Fighter, XvT and Alliance. All brilliant. Annoyingly, Alliance, which is the best one, doesn't work properly on modern OSs, no matter what you do.

No, because the space bit looks shite, so the one main SUPAH IMPORTANT area for improvement from Galaxies has been left out.

It looks like multiplayer KOTOR, which is "meh", really.

Annoyed, because I wanted to get into a Star Wars MMO, having missed out on Galaxies.

I'm unsure about it, having recently started on WoW. Bioware you have to trust to give it a bloody good go, and it's the Old Republic, therefore not irrevocably tainted by the dirty hand of Lucas like all the recent films, books, games and other insufferable cash-cow shite. I dunno though, maybe the ghost of what we know is to come story-wise will ruin it still.

As for gameplay, I think it could be too slight in terms of classes, trades and so on - but my main concern is the geography of it. KotOR just about got away with the scale of each planet by using plenty of repeated corridors and such - but I think when people imagine a Star Wars RPG they imagine each planet having something closer to the diversity of the whole WoW map, per planet, and it won't.

Of course, I'll have a go at some point, but I think I read somewhere today the standard game is £45 and then a subscription, so sucking my balls might be an option for the publishers.

I'll be keeping an eye on it, like all MMOs it's gonna need at least a year to bed in though, by which time it'll most likely be free as well.

Also I have precisely fuck all interest in the 'Star Wars Universe', the lore, the stories, where the Jedi came from etc, so that's no selling point for me whatsoever.

I suspect I'll probably stick with WoW until Blizzard's next MMO hits the scene, although obviously if SWTOR is generally reckoned to be amazingly good, I might have a look at it.

It's worth remembering that WoW took a good two years to hit its stride at all, and I'd argue it's only in the last two years that it's really become the truly fantastic game it is now.

Umm, wasn't the Old Republic set back before Episode I, hence being in the prequel era? I though the New Republic was set up after RotJ.

Also, TIE Fighter > X-Wing > XvT > Alliance IMO.

The Old Republic was the era KotOR was set in (hence the OR bit...), which is about 4,000 years before Episode I.

Why, exactly, Craster?

Given that, other than XvT (which sort of gave up on the narrative driven aspect), the games were iterative improvements on each other.

Tie Fighter > Alliance > X-Wing > X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter, obv.

Gay Nazi from Allo Allo! Tie Fighter wins!

...

The more they added 'lore' to the Star Wars universe, the more boring it became - until now it's like a super-boring history lesson. Lando was some cool buddy of Han's who was a bit dodgy and had a bald friend and who ran a big cloud mushroom city thing. They had a past. He betrayed Han but then became a goody and peow peow kaboom! That's all I wanted to know. Not where Lando came from. Not his administrative problems. Not what his winning hand was. Just that.

I liked The Knights of the Old Republic but I really couldn't give a toss about Star Wars anymore, honestly.

I dont see the point of investing years into a Star Wars MMORPG just to see it get cancelled.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/v ... -year.html

This is more my style MMO (no subscription, pay as you go, real cash economy)

I cant afford a spaceship currently so I use one of these to get about:

Erm, didn't last very long, did it?

Mind you, my WoW buddies who gave it a go all said it was a bit shit.

But if you like free things might be worth a crack I suppose.

Not to piss on your parade, but everyone in the world knew this was going free to play. The clues were the fact that it was flopping under the subscription model, and at every opportunity over the last month or so, every EA executive that has been interviewed has shoehorned some mention of the fact that "Free to play is the future" into the discussion.

Edit: As Rome burns around them, and their share price continues to plummet.

Wasn't it obvious even before the game was released that it was basically another KOTOR game but with a stupid MMO element tacked on? That a lot of people are saying the story mode for each class is great (so essentially singleplayer) but once you're done that the rest of the game is shit?

Unless a new MMO massively re-invents the whole market and changes play style and features significantly, then any new MMO is going to fail against the behemoth that is WoW. Doing WoW but a bit different just means once people have seen the story element, they all go back to WoW, as that has magnitudes more content and a honed-over-years slick playing experience.

Do something new MMO people!

He's talking about Galaxies, not Old Republic. I very nearly bought Galaxies when it came out but thought better of it.

Six free KOTOR stories is rather tempting, isn't it? You just need to bend over and spread 'em for Origin.

I played galaxies for a while. It had a huge amount of stuff that was great (crafting, economy, customising your home) and a huge amount of stuff that was awful (plot, quests, combat, spaceships).

The concept of having all those big wide open planets that took ages to cross, player-made settlements... staggering stuff for the time.
