We've been watching it since the QFs earlier (with delicious Sharapova crushing an Israelite in between).

That was terrific! BBC bloke said it was Korea's 7th consecutive Olympic Gold, which is pretty awesome going.

The Koreans seem to be outstanding at archery. Both teams in the men's final yesterday had Korean coaches.

I'm pretty good at 10 metre air rifle (nowhere near Olympic standard, mind) and that's hard enough when it comes to keeping up your A-game. At least with 10 metre air rifle, you're looking down your sights and you can see what you're shooting at.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, the archers are shooting those arrows up into the air above the target so that gravity does it's thing. I can't even imagine how hard it must be to do that and keep still etc. when you can't even see what you're shooting at.

Although I suppose the bows might be set up to fire the arrow up higher but have the sights on the target. Yeah, that'd make more sense.

The arrows certainly do appear to fly up then dip. Whatever magic's at play, it must all take tremendous strength and skill.

Few hours ago now, but I really enjoyed that. Thought she might just nick it, but couldn't quite find enough to overtake the Dutch lady.

Good to get the first medal though.

One thing annoying me about the coverage is the scoring.

The split times in the cycling.
The points in the boxing.

When gb ladies were playing football last night the caption said "men" and then gb scored and the score card said cameroon had scored.

Just seems a little shoddy to me.

Why is BBC HD showing the same hockey match as 302 HD? What's the point in that? Can't they show something from one of the other non-freeview channels?

Also: Hockey. Bit more interesting than football because the ball doesn't appear to be made of feathers, like in football, so it seems to take more effort to get it down field. And due to the tiny size of the ball it means the field looks huuuuuuuge.

Apparently there's an England and even a European Hockey League. Does anyone know if any of the players are professional or semi-professional?

It's not just the BBC, that's why. All broadcasters pool together for the Olympics, so it's not going to all be to the standard we expect.

I think it's a rule change rather than a lack of broadcast feature.

There was a scoreboard for the fans in the arena, that even then was obscured from the tv camera.

They updated the score at the end of each round, but they did not even show that.

The boxing scores are only shown at the end of the rounds, even for the attendees.

Hence the farce I mentioned in the other thread. As APOD said, it's a rule change, not a broadcast issue.

I know this may sound mad and a completely alien concept, but maybe, maybe, these judges are experts in their field and know what they're doing and looking at. Just a wild guess to float out there.

During the fight earlier, I've no doubt that they are experts in their sport. I'm unconvinced, however, that said sport is boxing.

BBC are showing the men's gymnastics just now. I always thought I didn't like the gymnastics but this has me pretty hooked. Watching the guys on the rings is just incredible, the strength they must have to swing round then stop dead, holding themselves perfectly horizontal to the rings...wow.

I love the gymnastics. My Ma used to watch it as much as possible when I were gruwin up, so I inherited the appreciation of it. Them.

I enjoy watching it too, I used to compete when I was about 10/11.

The Male Gymnastics Team of the Great British Olympics Team are currently 3rd at the half way stage, truly it is the end of times.

They'll probably not hold on to it but fair play to 'em.

Gymnastics, that's one of the bullshit sports that's all about the judges opinion of the athlete's artistic merit, rather than proper sports which use measurables to decide the winner.

Gotta feel for that poor Japanese guy who fucked his last skill of the vault, they were going for silver and missed out by something like 1.5 points.

Big controversy on the dismount, though... If they give 0.5 for landing the dismount, GB get bronze and the Ukraine are out of the medals. I don't know who I feel worse for :/
