He has really bad luck with this sort of thing. Live Aid was the same

NBC in the states didn't show it live.
They cut it.

I got home from work just as the chimneys rose out of the ground, and was perplexed why there were still dancing peasants and Victorians while WW1 soldiers expressed remembrance and West Indian immigrants arrived after World War 2, escorted by Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band!

Poor Rowan Atkinson, so clever and talented yet all he'll ever be known for outside Britain is Mr sodding Bean. Plus, the misconceptions are now cemented in the minds of the world: you really can take a London taxi into Buckingham Palace to see the Queen (and, as per Sickipedia, James Bond is now a documentary).

Then you had the dancing NHS celebration (what... the... hell...) a celebration of the greatest children's literature villain ever (Voldemort???) and then to cap it off that meandering and pointless 'young people singing and dancing to pop music' bit that went on far too long as they retired into the attic to knock boots.

A hopeless muddled mish-mash of popular culture, stereotypes and Dizzie Rascal.

Celebration of life in Britain? What, no strikes, chavs, drunken slags fighting on Saturday night, call centres?

I'm getting giddy with excitement about the archery between Japan and India going to a shoot-out.

Go Olympics!

Yeah. Besides, your lot would do a ceremony featuring three hours of someone digging himself out of snow, before being mistaken for an American.

I'm not reading 17 pages.

NBC did show the lesbian kiss. That was debunked. But they didn't show the 7/7 memorial, instead cutting to Michael Phelps being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest.

That archery contest was excellent. Japan's nerve at the end was incredible.

I'm watching the cycling now, which is ok. My personal highlight was when all the riders stopped to have a piss against a wall.

It's SELF-deprecating, not moose bummer-deprecating.

Early poll results show that highlights were:
Anything involving celebrities, so Bond, Atkinson, Beckham and Dizzee. Branagh too, although not so much (maybe people didn't recognise him).
The "rings in the sky-eee"!
Certain bits during the digital age (we're pretty sure that's to do with the songs playing)

Low points were:
The kids singing / signing the national anthem
The NHS bit, especially the baby head at the end of it
The 7/7 bombing bit (we think maybe people were expressing dislike at the event itself rather than the coverage, but we're going to follow up on that and ask)

It was during the TV section when they were doing soaps and stuff - it was the Brookside kiss.

Well I watched it in a bar full of different nationalities and everyone there really enjoyed it, yes there was a lot of banter during the NHS / Mary Poppins section but the musical section went down a storm as did the torch lighting.

Getting back to the hotel at 5am has put something of a crimp on Satuday though.

Most "guides to fitting in in London" make me sneer within seconds, but this one is near perfect:

If someone suggests going for a drink after work, they mean drink and nothing else.[...]In some bars you may see something called “Pork Scratchings” for sale. These are not for you.

Thus, “time for drink, innit?” is wrong, but “I’ve had four pints and no dinner, innit” is grammatically perfect.

Just been a big crash from Swiss rider Cancellara. He just slammed into the barriers turning a corner. The peloton could cash in here! :)

Not sure why Germany have let GB do all the work, though. Froome has already given up. Will be close!

Not really their fault. The other teams should have done their fair share of chasing - no one else has stepped up.

No the commentator got it wrong (his screen must have been in the glare or something as he couldn't see stuff that we could)

Yes, but cold comfort for Cav, I expect, especially as he came home from Beijing medal-less.
