I am incredibly pleased. Even if this somehow fails a complete bastard has at least been made severely uncomfortable for a time. The Bosnian war was my wake-up call as to how shitty the world is. Yup, good news, I say. Makes us for finding another blimmin' slug in the room this morning at any rate.

T'news:

He has got amazing hair though.

What are the odds that they'll make a better fist of his trial than they did with Milosevic's?

Oh.

It seems all a defendent has to do is sit there going "LALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU DON'T RECOGNISE YOU LALALALALA" through the judge's speeches, folding their arms and sighing demonstratively every so often, throwing the odd tantrum, and occasionally making a continuous humming noise to make the judge with the earpiece think his deaf-aid's knackered. Eventually, after a comfortable few years in a state-sponsored B&B, the trial will have gone on so long that the defendent will be dead.

BOOM - that's justice, Hague stylee.

I just find it hard to believe that anyone who looks so much like Father Ted could be so evil.

It's still awesome news that he's been captured. My gf works 'in' human rights, and I received about 7 excited emails yesterday about it, which was rather sweet, in a way :)

Hoorah for the capturing of infamous butchers!

I'm not terribly thrilled by the language though, the BBC are referring to him as a war criminal rather than any kind of "Suspected".

Which is 99.99999% likely to be true of course but they should not be doing so pre-trial.

He wouldn't be 'suspected', he would be 'alleged'. To be fair, there is a substantial amount of video footage to prove this.

Oh I know, I just don't like the idea of the BBC being loaded pre-trial. We of course can be. He's nearly as bad as those McCanns.

The ethnic cleansing and genocide were just resting in his account.

sorry?, milosovic's process was so difficult, because he was a much better lawyer and defendant than they had anticipated. It's far too easy to dismiss it as a failure (and hey, he did get a sort of life sentance in the end)

It was a farce. Yes, he was a good barrack room lawyer, but the judges shouldn't have let him run riot and make a mockery of the whole thing. If he'd pulled half of that shit in a national court of any jurisdiction he'd have been locked up for contempt of court.

i give you that, but the trial showed that the way of setting up such a court to depict a group of leaders was far too easy, and it did trigger a discussion on how to deal with the guilt question in yugoslavia, don't know if you've ever read Micheal Parenti, about this ( http://www.michaelparenti.org/Milosevic.html ) , but you might..

incidentally, don't think we are really in disagreement here, but i argue that the failure of the The Hague yugoslav court depends on your view of what is 'success' of a court. for me it was an important step in international justice, and the statutes of the ICC seem to have learned from it..

Oh indeed - I am fully in support of a robust international criminal law framework. I'm fairly disgusted at the Yanks' approach to the ICC.

Well, quite. Any country that has openly reserved its "right" to torture people is unlikely to want to be subject to a criminal law system that may hold them to account for that.

I can't help noting that it seems that a man wanted for 6 figure death toll genocide would hide by becoming a alternative therapist.

One evil job to another with this man!

They had this photo on the Guardian above the headline about Karadzic:

My first thought was - Rowan Williams is going to be pissed off they've put the wrong photo there.
