Dosbox is very simple. The only time you have trouble is if you have a game that uses clock speed to base game time off, when you have to set an emulated clock speed so everything doesn't happen at a million miles an hour.

Or indeed, in old Sierra adventures which were obsessed with timers to trigger things, that something even happens at all or not constantly.

Examples:
Space Quest 4. The Droid o' Death would appear constantly on the street section at the beginning. As soon as it had passed off the screen, its theme music would start all over again and it would appear again moments later. If you somehow got through the streets and up into the landing bay, unless you clicked USE on the timepod the VERY MILLISECOND you were given control back, the timer for the two guards not noticing you would expire immediately and you'd be shot. (clicking USE triggered an animation of Roger getting into the pod, and counted as having done it even if the game had to walk you over to the hatch first)

Gold Rush. To afford any route other than the wagon train, you needed to sell your house. The guy who would buy the house was meant to wander onto the screen once you'd displayed the for sale sign, and once you'd been on the screen a while. Timer was broken, he'd never show up. So you (or rather, I) was forced to take the wagon train. Except! Once you'd gotten out to the start of the frontier without the game randomly killing you of cholera (it was an educational game so this was teaching kids valuable lessons about the unfairness of disease) the foreman would order you to assess the state of the grass so the animals would have enough to eat and thus the strength to proceed.

Grass is on a timer, again. It never grows. No choice but to head out into the wilderness where your underfed animals die and so do you.

Transport Tyccon is immortal. Still play it along with Theme Hospital and recently Quest for Glory. Quite surprised that Gobliiins was renamed for the American market there.

Can you get Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper these days? I adored them when they came out but haven't seen them for years. I'd love if I could get them for the Mac.

I wasn't hugely impressed to be honest. It looked nice, the premise was interesting, but it just turned out to be pretty much exactly the same game as WoW, but with a clunkier interface.
So much for fresh ideas and a different take on the MMO thing.

3D is the future, not only of films and games but the alphabet.

It was a serious question. I learned the ASL alphabet not that long ago so I'm interested into what that 3D version would be intended for.

It an interesting idea, but to complain about how our minds are 'yoked' because of the way the Latin alphabet is used and the way to challenge that is to spin those letters around in a 3D modeller and then continue to use them to represent the same meanings anyway? What does the hive mind consider to be the current best general gaming news site? I had Kotaku bookmarked for ages before realising that pretty much everything about the entire site annoys me; not least their insistence on banging on about stupid Japanese bullshit that no one gives a shit about.

I honestly don't even bother anymore. Eurogamer is the best of a bad bunch, but there are only a couple of reviewers there who are worth a damn.

If I want to know about a game, I look for gameplay on YouTube and I search for people talking about it on here and NeoGAF. GAF is particularly helpful because it's such an active forum and you can usually get 200 opinions about any given game within hours of release.

It's not so much for reviews (I've got Gamespot, Eurogamer and others in my RSS feeds for the consoles I own so I get a decent spread of opinions) it's really just for general gaming news and pointing out of upcoming games.

Despite having EG reviews pop up in my RSS list I'd totally forgotten that they've got an actual website I could read (because I'm an idiot!) so I'll bookmark that and try to train myself to browse there rather than Kotaku when I'm bored. Thanks chaps.

NeoGAF! Most of the gaming websites get their news from there anyway. Seriously.

For gaming industry stuff I like MVC and general game stuff mostly entertainingly written with character Joystiq. I used to try and post relevant stuff on here but there's a general move away from games and more bickering about chavs and how your hot water appliances don't work anymore. Unfortunately.

Apart from that, I read Kotaku but like you, don't know why. I tend to rely on the forum and Twitter for my gaming news.

Yeah I went off those cunts. Their whole big thing was that they stuck it to the man and started up when their main man got fired from Gamespot (I think), for refusing to bow to PR pressure. A great start. Unfortunately, they've now sold the website to the company that owns Gamespot. I simply have no faith in games journalism at this point. It's a fucking joke.

You could always read Rock Paper Shotgun and laugh at how they all think they're so fucking special because they like 'proper' gaming machines and not those silly 'toy' gaming machines.

Unfortunately, the sheer weight of this arrogance crushes the often interesting coverage of good games.

Interestingly, from the Wiki article, that very corporate move led directly to the guy being finally allowed to talk about what actually happened with his leaving Gamespot. Depressingly it's exactly what everyone thought; people under him gave not-great reviews to a Ratchet & Clank game and to Kane & Lynch 2 so they fired him due to pressure from advertisers.

Meh. Not so much the letters as what you do with them.
